"We'll stand on his hand, that's how you pin your man, we'll smash him from Preston to Epworth!" Onward and on to the ends of reason, where malice is the means of the earth. Onward and on, this strange-wrought bird, onwards and over the black coffee earth, Onward and on, this laughing train to the ends of its low, low mirth... Where the media make it with the media whores, Lady Time minces man-meat with her contract claws for a barbecue with the veterans of the talkback wars in the outback palace... of one John Laws. O we will adjust to this new condition of living like a sailor with his hands tied behind his back imprisoned after sailing into foreign waters, unawares, accustoms himself to a new condition of living. But a shadow falls between this hurtling intent and its realisation, for its government is rotten and therefore it's civilisation which is certainly taking no passengers TRAAIIIIIIIIN What does this song mean? Well, it's basically comparing Australia/our world in general, to a train that is hurtling into hell, hurtling across the landscape, not stopping or slowing down, not taking on/letting off passengers along the way. I guess you could call the lyrical content a series of snapshots of this hell-bound train - suicidal drug addicts (pills and stupid juice), fifteen year old whores in training, harsh refugee policies (sailor with his hands tied behind his back after sailing into a foreign land), John Laws, and so forth... with the narrator as a sort of demonic conductor. By Augie March standards this song is extremely fast, exhilerating, even brutal. Comes out of nowhere and stomps all over you. What it means to me? Well, it was the first Augie March song I got into - the music caught me first, and then I discovered it had some of the most beautiful lyricism I'd ever heard. Augie March shows me that "amazing lyrics" and "amazing music" can go hand in hand. The song like most Augie March stands up to serious literary analysis. It hangs together as poetry even without music - read it aloud and find out. I guess This Train, among others, means to me that there can be beauty and poetry in modern music, even if not enough people have heard it. (edited by Arwon on 03-23-04 10:41 PM) |

| I live in New South Wales. Its population is maybe 5 or 6 million. Its capital and largest city is Sydney. New South Wales is maybe twice as big as Texas, and its state flower is the Waratah and its Rugby team is not as good as the Brumbies but better than the Queensland Reds... | Augie March's 'Owen's Lament' is haunting and numbing. The title references the WW1 poet Wilfred Owen, which sets the background - it's a soldier about to go away to war. Starts out really shostly and subdued... I get shivers down my spine when the less subdued instrumentation kicks in and the music builds to a crescendo. Then it flatlines as his voice becomes even more ghostly as he sings aobut his death. Lyrically stunning, just to make it even better. It's just plain moving. At the other end of the spectrum is Augie March's 'This train will be taking no passengers'. Aggressive, stomping, rolling, kinda dark as far as Augie March goes. The subject matter is simple enough - our society is a train hurtling into hell, not slowing down, not letting anyone off, with the singer as sort of a demonic narrator or conductor. This song like all Augie March is also lyrically amazing - now that I know all the words it smoothly rolls off my tongue. "Onward and on this strange-wrought bird/onward and over the black-coffee earth/onward and on this laughing train/to the end of its low low mirth" is sheer brilliance, as is the rest. The song just grabs me, immediately from the opening guitar strum. Especially when I'm drunk, when I'm prone to stomping and flailing about while shouting the lyrics (which still flow rather well with little memory loss) if I hear the song. And, given that this band is the only one I ever enthuse about on this board, a few other songs which never fail to stir me: 1979 by the Smashing Pumpkins. It's one of those songs that can evoke a variety of reactions - it's the allpurpose nostalgia song, and I firmly believe it will be a staple of retirement homes and oldies stations in 60 years, and that I will still love the song. Say what you will about Corgan, this song is a damn fine legacy to leave. Modest Mouse's entire 'the Moon and Antarctica', but especially "the Stars are Projectors". More generally, I'm a sucker for building, swelling, shifting, uber-dramatic instrumentation, in songs like: Godspeed You Black Emperor - Lift Yr Skinny Fists to Heaven Like Antennas" Explosions in the Sky - First Breath After Coma Bjork - Bachelorette Smashing Pumpkins - Tonight Tonight Blackheart Procession - A Light So Dim Flaming Lips - Do You Realise Radiohead - How To Dissappear Completely |

| I'm flying to America, spending upwards of 1500 grand to get there and certainly a lot more once I get there, to go and see my friends in San Diego. I took a year off before university to work and take this trip. I'm putting myself in a foreign country for 3 months. | 18 Explore for a while then find some comfortable and non-mind-numbing niche to curl up in. I used to wanna be a writer, but I realised that 10% of all humans who have ever existed are alive right now, and therefore achieving significantly in any creative field of endeavour is damn near impossible irrespective of talent or lack thereof. The world is just too big and too anonymous. Also realising I am Not Very Good and My Ideas Have Already Occurred to Others kinda helped with this realisation. So I've adjusted to something a little less vague and teenage: -Finish Uni, get a degree in International Studies, because that's the place I have guaranteed (I deferred starting for a year) from last year's application -Get into either journalism or teaching history or maybe foreign aid work? -Perhaps have an apropriate and cliched period of angsty alcohol-fuelled self-destruction and/or a mid-twenties "what the hell am I doing?" type crisis along the way. There may or may not be a solo round-the-world backpacking adventure during this -Try really really hard to NOT start a family -Live overseas, perhaps indefinitely (edited by Arwon on 04-25-04 06:23 AM) |
