Yes, it's tileset-related. One of them (I think it's just one) will increase the palette numbers of layer 2 tiles by 4. Tiles that normally use palettes 0-3 will use palettes 4-7 instead, while tiles that normally use palettes 4-7 will remain unaffected.

Yes, that's a real NSS. I was lucky enough to play one at a local pizza parlor back in the early 90's. I seem to recall something being different about one of the games (F-Zero, maybe).

Why don't people verify their dumps before they go spreading them around the Internet? Especially when it comes to something as rare as this...

Just set the custom tiles to act like the existing exit-enabled pipe tiles (137 and 138). I've had to do this several times.

Is that a vertical level? Layer priority doesn't work the same in vertical levels, for some reason. It seems like a simple modification to the level mode flags would solve this problem.

I wonder if you can copy an existing level mode's flags into one of the unused slots and modify them as needed? Would LM recognize and properly display these hacked modes, or are they hard-coded? (FuSoYa?)

Goodness gracious, I do believe you're trying to use one of the very first ASM hacks (if not the first) I ever released.

I strongly recommend you don't use that, as it was created well before I knew much of anything about SMW's inner workings, and as such is probably very badly written. I may revisit anti-gravity sometime in the future, for use in SMO, and if so I will release an updated (working) patch.

Making an invisible block is easy; I created one for SMO a long time ago. You just need to check Mario's Y speed and see if he's moving upwards when he hits it, so it doesn't appear when he falls through it from above. Use the following code:

A5 7D 30 01 60 A0 01 A9 xx 8D 93 16 60

(where xx is the lower 2 numbers of the block you want to appear)

In Block Tool, set the Below Offset to 0, and all the rest to -1. In LM, set the block to act like #25. That's all there is to it!

Uh, last I checked, ROM hacks aren't exactly legal. A lawsuit would get you absolutely nowhere, except maybe on the receiving end of a lawsuit from Nintendo themselves, should your case attract enough attention.

Not that I'm endorsing selling hacks for profit, but this part of the disclaimer is totally useless.

That's why you set everything but the "Below Offset" to -1, so it doesn't activate unless you a) hit it from below, and b) are moving upwards.

Wow. I may just have to ditch my crusty old HDMA system for this.

With this system, can you use your own code to manipulate the HDMA? I'd like to keep my multi-layered cave backgrounds and auto-scrolling clouds.

Also (probably a dumb question, knowing you), does this work on a real SNES?

Probably a dumb question, but have you checked the BIOS for any USB or LAN options? I think some new boards might ship with those disabled.

As for a DVD burner, I just split the cost of an external drive with my brother. It was only $99.99 at CompUSA, and has a 2-year warranty. The thing's kind of interesting, it's just an ordinary external drive enclosure with an IDE drive pre-installed, so we shouldn't have to replace the whole unit if the drive goes bad.

I'm guessing you guys don't have any CompUSAs up there, though, so that probably doesn't help...
