Well, it's tricky. You have to bounce before all three gaps Don't stop when you are a ball inside the gap, you lose the momentum.

Try re-entering the room/ ensuring you're using an accurate emu.

The lower part of that maze is perhaps harder.

It really isn't that hard. But I know what you're going through!

The trick is to drop from the highest possible point in that area of the maze (think about this) when you're trying to get through the first left gap. You don't necessarily even have to bounce into the gap, you can roll straight through, and straight through the following gap.

You'd have to be more specific but sounds like you're on the right track!

I'm looking into it now. Thank you so much for reporting the issue.

Already though- I cannot imagine why, but I'll do my best to find out.

On a different note- Does anyone know if SnowBro is still around these days? Perhaps with a different alias? I have a few questions about items and such that I'd like to pose to him.

Thanks again Jman.

Thanks a lot!

hehe... Do you mean the very first screen in the game?

It's just a little puzzle to get the juices flowing! Not too tricky.

I give a way a lot of answers to puzzles and am trying to stop. If you're still stuck tomorrow let me know and I'll tell you!

wow. I for one have absolutely no idea what that is.

text for roms is normally found by creating tables and using a hex editor.

Did he say anything about gfx compression? Maybe that's what it is.

yeah. Sorry about that F-zero thing. I had a few beers and decided to check the board. what a dildo.

I'm wrapping up metroid captive and was wondering if there are any more bug reports? I still can't sort the '99' energy limit after collecting the first energy tank. any help welcomed.

Many thanks,

SPJ

This section is Samus ship. A little history repeated from Metroid Fusion

>Okay, Tourain, or whatever the area is called. Second room. Lost as ****.

Hmmn... I don't want to give this away really. Let's just say there's away to get to all the metroids in that corridor

I'm delighted to see at least someone is having a real go at this game! Good stuff!

ok. The idea is to blast through the right hand side of the glass windows in the corridor, and journey right along the outside of the ship. I encountered no issues with this using VirtuanNes or Nestopia.

I'll look into it again, of course.

I've noticed another couple bugs in the game that need looking at- one serious, but emminantly fixable.

As for a few of the other issues, I'll make a post soon with all the other bugs, and maybe parasyte or snowbro would be so kind as to help me out. We shall see!

Thanks for playing Jman! You're almost certainly the first to have completed Captive- congrats. I'm afraid this hack may not have attracted the attention I hoped it would .

So what did you think of the game? Anything you'd like to see changed/added for the final relesase?

The technical chat here is well over my head, though it seems unlikely that this project can meet a conclusion whereby the experience is the same as the BS original. This is a considerable loss imo.

Nonetheless- if there is a way, and it is a question of whether interest exists; I would like to put my vote in! I would absolutely love to see this finished.

Best of luck mate

EDIT: I don't know if Cowering has a redumped version of this rom, but he has a website these days: http://www.allgoodthings.us/mambo/

I've found him to be very helpful and I'm sure he'd be more than happy to help you out if he could. He responds to forums quite regularly

This is pretty special DD- it looks great and has loads of beautiful ideas.

I have to say though- I'm not overly keen on the controls for luigi. the traction is something i just can't get used to (It reminds me a little of lost levels, in this regard) Though the jumping and shell control is spot on.

Please don't get me wrong though- I'm blown away. You're skills as a game designer are very, very evident.

The graphics changes are awesome. I really mean that- superb work.

Um.. the first enemy I came across utterly destroyed me though. I hope this isn't going to be a needlessly hard hack

Small issue- using Nestopia- when the character goes through a door, they seem to walk over the wall and to the other side rather than disappearing.

Keep up the good work mate.

Posted on 07-25-05 08:06 PM, in Extending NES roms- no flaming please! Link
Every doc I've looked up about increasing the size of a NES rom more or less states: 'Don't even try!!!'

Nonetheless- it seems that DD has managed to do so with his upcoming Mario vs Luigio hack, so it's got me thinking again.

I really want to put more types of screens and room objects into Metroid. If I recall correctly- Parasyite was trying to expand the rom for his wip metroid hack? I wonder how that goes, and what processes are involved?

I know it can be a bit of a sore subject, but short of learning the game's code, might there be a way to increase the room data in original Metroid??

Thanks,

Thanks to all for taking the time to write such helpful, considered replies.

I can't tell you how surprised I am that ROM expansion is a real possibility these days- for so long it was discouraged in so many docs.

I think I'll have a look around in a hex editor for some spare FFs and 00s first (trying to run before I can walk otherwise).

Thanks again one and all.

Is there a pc-98 emu w/ a debugger, and maybe some kind of PPU viewer? If so then you have a good starting point.

What games you looking to translate? Do you have scripts?
