"And now that I am bleeding profusly about the head..."

Thomas unclips his chainsaw and flips the power switch.

"Let's rock!"

Thomas revs the engine and cuts into the Green Koopa.

Posted on 10-11-05 09:04 AM, in Temporal Flux Release Link
Some of these questions have been asked of me. I thought I would post them here in case anybody was curious.

Q) Is Temporal Flux dead?
A) No, but it has slowed to a glacial progress.

Q) I thought 2.0 was supposed to be out in June or something.
A) It was, and it would have been.. but I lost my previous job. While I was massively underpaid, it did give me some nice pluses, like plenty of spare time and access to the latest tools.

Q) Why is it taking so long?
A) Because I now have about 5 hours per day to do things I previously took about 14 hours for. Given that a number of these items are vital, like eating for example, and it leaves little time to concentrate and code. Add to that the chaos of commuting 150 miles to work and living in two different cities, and, well, hardly anything gets done.

Q) Well, when will 2.0 actually be out?
A) I would really like to think it would be by or on the first anniversary of the initial release, but that seems unlikely given the number of bugs to smooth out.

Q) Open source it!
A) Since I make a living from writing software, the concept of making my own copyrighted work open source gives me chills. I have no plans to open source this, or any of my other full projects. If at some point I should call it quits though, for whatever reason, I promise that the source will be passed into capable hands. As I get more and more paranoid about life in general, this may happen anyway, just so the project will survive me.

Q) Nuts. Well, how many bugs are left?
A) As of this post, there are 11 open bugs. Some are minor, some are not.

I can answer any other general questions you may also have on this topic.

I "cracked" FFVI awhile back.

http://acmlm.overclocked.org/board/thread.php?id=32454 (None of the image links will work now)

Never really finished it off because I began work on Temporal Flux shortly after that. Course, if I had had GSD to work with back then, it probably would have went a lot quicker.

Visual Basic source isnt too great for team development..

Its not so much that you are using Visual Basic, but that you are using VB Six.

You may want to consider using the Visual Studio 2005 Express compilers and SharpDevelop (though as slow as the latter is, I think I would just code it without an IDE).

DRDHack is a really nice program though. And you are certainly a better programmer than myself; had someone asked me to add graphical capabilities to a freakin' data editor, I would have told them to go to hell.

(What do you mean you want your toaster to make Jello? Its for makin' freakin' toast! )

Anyway, i have gotten myself started on the quest to convert to VC++. Once im able to do windows programs fairly well i will recode DRDHack for C++ 6.0.

If you are not going to learn Forms (which would require the Framework), do yourself a favor and learn MFC. Trying to program in straight Win32 is about the biggest headache you could incur.

Or maybe MinGW is good. Have not used it, so I cannot speak on the subject.

I just don't want to have to install another layer of obscurity just so I can have runtimes for runtimes hogging up all my resources with weird new bugs.

The new layer of obscurity is supposed to protect against things like buffer overruns. Also keeps programs from doing really weird stuff by just immediately failing them if they screw up. The combined pseudo-code also allows for cross-language compatibility.

I will dismiss "runtimes for runtimes" as a knock against Microsoft. Not that its entirely unfounded, since they have had large runtime packages for a number of years now. Hell, its practically unavoidable (even this program requires a couple of items). The main difference between the .NET Framework and previous packages is that Microsoft now forces you to get them all at once (which helps to avoid DLL Hell).

Binary programs hog memory too, as its standard runtime policy to just grab a ton more memory than is actually needed. Even worse, binaries have memory leaks. The Framework does not, as it has a garbage collector (another benefit of the "extra layer").

As for weird new bugs, I suppose it depends on how you define weird. A program will no longer keep running if it screws up (and the developer is not handling exceptions), and the system will keep right on chugging. That is A-OK in my book.

But no one said he had to use the Framework with the express editions (which are free by the way). VC 2005 can still compile to binary.

OOC: Have we been told what Star Points do, or is that to be revealed later? Also, I have completely given up trying to figure out this "you can do many things at once" stuff, so I do these things in order until I run out of actions for this turn.

- Thomas feels healthier (2 points to HP), stronger (2 points to POff), and tougher (1 point to PDef).
- Thomas practices his uppercuts (takes Punch Tech)
- Thomas loans 10 coins to Peardian. "Pay me back when you get the chance. I will give you another 10 coins if no one else needs to borrow any."
- Thomas buys four Mushrooms.
- Thomas pays the wise old Koopa 30 coins. (10 coins left)
- Thomas heeds the advice of the wise old Koopa.
- Thomas claims S1

The technical anniversary is 11/24, but I am looking to release it the day before Thanksgiving if at all possible (which was what I was really targetting last year). I am closing in on some of the bugs, but I only have three weeks left, so it will probably not happen by then.

As for when it will happen, I simply cannot say, for all of the reasons mentioned above.

I voted for Kane for the main event. I gave a submission match to Flair.

I voted "debate" for SCSA vs Coach. Let's face it, Coach cannot put on a match, so a debate would probably be the most interesting thing to watch (both men have mic skills), and will certainly end in a stunner.

I voted for Cactus Jack mostly because the other two gimmicks are just goofy.

I voted for Christian, and would have voted for Matt Hardy after that. Rey always puts on the same damn match, JBL has no ring skills, and I have never liked Holly.

I am completely uninterested in the Eugene match. I voted for Jake, but would have prefered the option of Dibiase.

I voted for leather. We have seen the other two. I would prefer the option of a real match though. I mourn the death of the women's division.

While there is no option for the tag team match, the two guys who I did not vote for the main event would actually make the best pairing, IMO.

Overworld tile properties are editable in the current BETA. Still, you should not go nuts with the exits, as you cannot land on them.

Does this include the property that keeps Crono's sprite underneath the tile?

Honestly, it has been about seven months since I have touched the Overworld map code. As I recall, all L1 stuff is above the sprites and all L2 stuff is below, end of story. The only thing there is to edit is elevation. This creates solidity for the various modes of travel. Oddly, the highest elevation is considered to be an exit.

And is it individual tiles or if you change one tile, it'll change every occurence of that tile in the game?

It will change every occurence of that tile for that map. The editor reflects this in its display.
