Once I get into the "zone" I tend to write a lot of code, but it's hard to switch into and out of it. Usually I just work somewhere comfy and quiet, so I can focus entirely on mapping and working the code in my mind. If I have enough energy and start focusing, it just happens and I start writing code.

It takes a few hours to get out though, and during that time I keep thinking in programming terms. It can make for some pretty strange dreams.

Rough draft finished. I'll do some lineart and tones later. The last panel should be bumped down in the final version so you can see the computer she's holding.

Also, that's a computer lab downstairs where I live. I sometimes go there to print stuff or fix layouts in Windows.

It looks like the background out of a space drama anime. Nice work.

The GIMP lets you create animated GIFs by treating each layer as a frame. It also has a few useful plugins for working with animations, such as an optimizer that calculates the changes between frames and deletes all of the common pixels (just don't use it on a GIF you still want to edit though).

I realize pencils aren't very modern, but it is a mechanical pencil.

The guy smoking needs a cool background. The cigarette's hard to notice too.

These are just random sketches, but the guy smoking was going to be with a dramatic backdrop as possibly the first shot in a comic.

Thanks for all the comments (and the devWatch). I'm thinking up a few projects right now, but Midterms and papers are staring me straight in my face...

I'd just use these fonts (specifically 6x13), but that's because I'm lazy. I also used to be a Linux user, so I'm a little fond of them. You'd probably have to write a script to generate images from the BDF files though.

But to make a really nice font, you just need years of typography and design training or talent, along with a good eye. To make a non-sucky font, look at existing fonts and study up on basic font design. Then practice a lot. You can really do anything you want as long as it's easy to read.

To get Japanese fonts in Windows, download/install the Japanese Language Pack from Microsoft's website. Mac OS X should have a package on the CD if Asian fonts aren't already installed.

You could give it a try, but it's really an antique of the bitmap font world. Older font editors and UNIX/X11 font editors probably support the format. The files themselves aren't big, and the format is based on plain text (open it in any text editor to see). It's more of a transitional format that often gets converted to another format for actual use though.

Also, if you have fuzzy text, then make sure you disable ClearType. Normally, anti-aliasing is only applied to larger (usually > 12pt) font sizes in Windows, where it's usually preferable anyway. If you're using smaller font sizes with Japanese fonts, try a variety of sizes since only one or two might have detailed hinting to make it look nice.

Also, Photoshop's text tool lets you choose what type of anti-aliasing is used with the font, including none at all.

If it's a cheap one, you can just use my method and peel off the stickers then put them back in order. That was what I was thinking of doing for a comic ("I bet I can solve it in the next three minutes." and "IDIOT! You just peeled off the stickers.").

That's hardly what I'd call minimalistic, both from a design and implementation standpoint. Instead, it's just hard on the eyes and lacking content.

And do try to avoid using web design techniques from the 20th century.

I finally got my wacom tablet back, and I bought a replacement pen so it doesn't stick/mess up anymore.

This morning I drew a friend too.

You got it. I have a small/cheap one that goes well with my laptop. They're pressure sensitive, and the more advanced models also have things like tilt and airbrush controls. Add in some software like Photoshop or Painter, and you can really do just about anything.

GCC when called without the -c flag will link and build the executable from all source and object files given to it, and then either output a.out (a.exe for MingW) or what you tell it to with -o (e.g. gcc -o test.exe test.c).

You can use the -c flag to compile each source file into an object file:
gcc -c source1.c # output source1.o
gcc -c source2.c # outputs source2.o
etc.

Then just call gcc and list all of the object files (and also source files) you want to use. It'll go ahead and call the linker and everything for you:

gcc -o source.exe main.c source1.o source2.o

With windows programs, be sure to include -mwindows and the resource file object:

gcc -o source.exe main.c source1.o source2.o res.o -mwindows

This is basic gcc usage, so remember it.

Draw three circles in a horizontal row, select them and hit copy, drag a vertical guide out of the ruler, and paste several horizontal rows down. Then just line them up with the guide and make sure they're equally spaced.

If they were bigger, I would suggest running them through a vector tracing program like Adobe Streamline, Flash, or autotrace.

Another thing you can try is scaling them 4x bigger without any anti-aliasing/filtering, converting them to grayscale or color, gaussian blur, adjust the levels, and shrink them back down. Probably won't work very well, but worth a shot.

I'd rather wrestle alligators than use something with a syntax like VB (or AppleScript). Dim this, Dim that, it's all very cryptic to me.

You see, I started out with C++, and that got me into a very object-oriented mindset. Then I learned C, and, by learning the true freedom of pointers, I earned my distaste for any language stricter than C, even C++. Finally, I've become addicted to C-like syntaxes.

Now I only like to use C, Objective-C, Perl, Python, or PHP, depending on the task. And then I only use PHP, because it's everywhere and makes a good binding language.

So in conclusion, the language you start with can have a really heavy influence on your "tastes" and methods as a programmer later on, as much so as the type of programming you do. If you really want to learn game programming, you'll want something flexible that lets you do low-level tasks easily and efficiently. If you think that language is going to be VB.NET, then use it. But don't think it'll be easier to step through VB.NET on your way to C++, because if anything, it really will be harder.

It's like me trying to learn Lisp after years of C and C++. Lisp even represents a completely different programming model (functional bottom-up, as opposed to top-down object-oriented, or procedural/structural). I only tried for a few weeks, but I just couldn't wrap my head around any of it. Meanwhile, I could learn Java in a matter of days.

And as a side note, C++ with SDL is really, really easy. I think it's one of the easiest ways to step into game programming these days. I never really did much game programming though.
