3 tips :
1) http://softpixel.com/~cwright/sianse/docs/65816NFO.HTM <-- excellent reference on 65816
2) http://www.obelisk.demon.co.uk/6502/reference.html <-- great 6502 page . . . You don't need to learn 6502... There's nothing new to learn. The two languages are nearly identical and this site is a very easy starting point.
3) Look in a ROM for examples . . . You don't need to understand it fully to have it be useful. Just remember that:
a) most codes end with 20 or 22 (JSR or JSL) . . . assuming another code immediately follows, that'd be a good place to start cracking something (just to interpret)
b) Any value in RAM is accessed somehow. Let's say HP is located at $7E:8090 . . . Somewhere in the ROM, there will be STA $8090 (the $8090 will be viewed as 90 80 in the ROM) . . . Know the hex value of STA (aka- the opcode) and you should be able to find the code that stores a value to your HP. Try translating the hex into code you can translate into english.

BTW- ASM is hard to get started with, but after the first bits of knowledge, it gets very easy, very fast.

Negative One... Check out earlier posts and look at KP9000's graphics. I don't need a "decorator". Already got one of the best.

BTW- Not waiting for *all* the ASM changes to be done before level design can be started. Only the basic structures (larger ones have been started) need to be finished for that. I will be clearing out some space for people first though. This should be ready a week after I finish this one particular code (if God would be so kind).

When you're playing a game, who in hell cares if you call it a hack, edit, modification, or whatever... A rose by any other name still smells as sweet.

This thread wasn't intended to be another "Editors are for n00bz" thread. We've got too many of those already. (Let it be known that the only reason I code editors is so I won't have to edit the data on such a low level . . . I do not think in binary).

The basic point is that we DO need more mods developed by groups. Two people can be a group. What tends to happen though is that a "n00b" volunteers to do the level design, since that's easy with an editor, and someone else does graphics and ASM and everything else . . . I suck at graphics; I have one main graphic person for Alliance. I suck at ASM; I'm doing 90% of my own ASM, but have people to help me when I get stuck. I get bored with level design; There's no fun for me in playing a game if I've made all the levels myself, so a few people will be doing this. In total, Alliance will be done by 4 hackers and several advisors. If it weren't for the ASM portion (I'm working on it, give me a break), it could be done already . . . But no one would want to play.

Anyway, I digress. If you're a n00b, develop and then show you've got some sort of skills. Then come up with an idea. Then ask someone to offer assistance with the idea, once you've shown some initial progress. It's a three step process!

Is it possible that my on-line available SMILE is so outdated that I don't even have the graphic extractor in that version??? Can't be. Wow.

I never posted here that I got the page back up, because I figured word and mouth and all . . . But the page is only partially up right now anyway (my computer has some issues using SFTP).

The link to SMILE on my page goes to a non-existing download. The vomit page is going to go back up (with more images even) next time I get a chance. Until then, zophar.net has the most recently *officially* released version. There's a more recent version on my computer (and a few others) that'll be released once I get back to NY.

The deep voice you hear saying "The last metroid is in captivity," IS Samus's voice . . . She had a cold.

I'm definitely interested . . . I have always wanted to use the in-game editor actually . . . Imagine it: Edit levels on your NES emulator of choice, then use another program to rip the level out of the RAM and save to the ROM in the appropriate spot/format/etc...

In any case, I'm looking forward to this. Looks great so far.

BTW- Brainfuck is an easy language to use. An example follows:

Start
  Wet
  Lather
  Rinse
  Repeat Until Clean = True
End
