SMILE was updated a day or so ago. Lots of bug fixes (one of them critical), a map editor, and some other things added. Same place as always:
http://jathys.zophar.net/smile/index.html

I'm going to be doing another release this coming week. New features have already been selected for the upcoming release, but I'm taking any bug/annoyance reports too though. (I already know about the map editor making orange blocks sometimes... already been fixed). Any other bugs you find, please let me know by Sunday/Monday.

I have done a bunch of *mini* hacks. Arena is, by far, the largest hack I've done . . . Arena is only a "testing ground" for SMILE and ASM though. I think I'm about halfway done with it.

I have at least 2 *full* hacks planned in the future . . . One so grand that I'll probably never get to the 2nd one. I just hope I get enough people to help with the project (which will officially be started in March).

Was the savestate made in Arena? If not, then you're probably loading into data that no longer exists or has been changed. Arena should not be loaded from savestates made in non-hacked roms, just as you wouldn't load a savestate for ChronoTrigger while playing SuperMario.

As for the problem getting to the save file select screen . . . This one confuses me. Do you have your emulator set to automatically load the most recently used savestate? If so, that's the problem. If not, I haven't got a clue.

Hmmm... There was a version of Arena that did that, but it wasn't ever released (I don't think). You are using arena7, right? If not, test out:
http://jathys.zophar.net/files/arena7.ips

X-ray crashes the landing zone, but other than that it should work fine.

BTW- what emulator are you using?

>However, everything goes well untill the opening story is at it's end and you see
>Samus's ship fly to the Space Station, after that, nothing.

Well, that would be part of the problem then . . . Arena doesn't use the openning story. The intro is not used at all. Arena doesn't have Samus's ship fly to the Space Station. The "first" room of the space station is severely messed up, but is not used anywhere in the hack.

Are you using a clean rom? I know you are, but I had to ask. You're the first person that's mentioned these problems . . . By the fact that you say you have a problem after getting the morph/bomb, I'm assuming you're no longer freezing at the non-existing intro

Do you have any cheat codes turned on?

This will be a rather... involved hack, requiring a team approach to finish it. Basically, each person who helps will be in charge of level design for one area of the game (unless someone wants to do just graphics, or just ASM, or just....) People will be mostly free to develop in different directions, as long as general rules are followed (such as certain events taking place, not overwriting someone else's data, etc...)

If you're interested in possibly joining the project, check out the Alliance Homepage for a little bit more information, or go to #jzd on acmlm's irc network for a lot more information . . . Just ask what a "gravitroid" is and you'll get an idea of some of the stuff I'm up to.

In any case sorry that there are no screenshots (won't be for a while either, as level design is taking the back burner until a few ASM changes are implemented). Also sorry that I have officially killed my Arena hack . . . It was only a testing grounds for SMILE, so I could start making a bigger hack.

multi-beam disabling = possible, but unnecessary... weaken the multi-beam
wall jumping = I may be putting in a "fix" for this in my hack... limiting how many times you can jump off a wall
bomb jumping = may be putting in a fix for that cheat as well (or making it harder to do)

I tell you what I'm putting in my hack, because I do plan on making some/most of the scripts available for general use.

The best game that could possibly be made:

It starts easy, gets harder as you get closer to the end . . . Various secret and unnecessary paths should be incredibly difficult to manuever through, providing extra bonuses to people who can find/beat those areas.

Different endings is a great way of doing this.

>And I don't know of any other ASM hackers that would be interesting in this
>auspicious project.

I will be doing most of the ASM myself (learning as I do it, mind you). There are actually some other ASM people who have offered help (in passive ways, of course) . . . Kejardon has helped me shrink and speed up my existing codes, along with making a code of his own just for fun... jman2050 has always been willing to help figure stuff out, since the data helps him to a degree anyway... Parasyte is offering some help now, it appears... Another ASM hacker (nameless until I'm sure that he still wants to help) had actually offered to help out a fair amount with the ASM.

I'll take what help I can get, but do actually plan most ASM changes myself. Only two smaller scripts are done, but I'll be doing 3 or 4 more this weekend (see: Sunday). Also plan on starting one of my 3 large scripts, God help me.

Math: Of course I meant you Get your a$$ onto IRC. I'll be on tonight, but work from Wed-Sat and disappear for long periods of time. Tonight I'll be making 3 new scripts for the hack (info seeking was last night) along with a minor release for SMILE. Could use some advice on one of the scripts.

Set Carry shoul work just fine, as it's not effecting anything but the carry bit... Just in case Carry is checked by another operation when you leave this section of code, I'd use EA.

EA = NOP = No Operation = Nothing at all gets done to anything.

Posted on 03-18-05 09:29 AM, in How do you find level data within a rom? Link
Corruption is awesome, when it's not completely random . . . Corrupt all of any specific value throughout the entire rom. If the game crashes, try a different value (you learn to avoid certain, often used values). If the game doesn't crash, check to see if the level looks any different. If it does, keep cutting the area you're corrupting in half and checking to see if the level is still corrupted.

Cutting the corrupted in half speeds things up drastically.

I was trying to make one of those for the SNES before . . . Not a level editor, but an editor nevertheless. It would be an editor to allow people to make their own editors. A great idea at first, but turned out to be way more trouble than needed. Imagine having to bug fix your program in order for someone to bug fix theirs

Arena is located there (a few versions actually). Sadly for you, it's no longer in development (but is available to play) . . . A different hack has taken its place.

View -> Tile Size -> 8x8(Scroll Editor)
Simply click on an area and its scroll will change color.

Red = No scrolling into the area, unless you make PLM scrolls for it (ie- hidden area)
Blue = Regular scrolling
Green = Full scrolling (goes about 2 tiles lower than blue)

Posted on 06-01-05 01:01 PM, in SMILE version 0.40 Link
SMILE is now at version 0.40 . . . Here's what's new:
-set bomb timer
-set maximum # of bombs, beams, or missiles Samus can use at once
-easier handling of music control/track
-barrier tiles (you go through them, enemies don't)
-create/load/save enemy palettes to/from Tile Layer

That last one is pretty nice, if I do say so myself. I know SMILE handles palette changes already, but you can't directly see how it's affecting your critter. This helps you visualize the enemy in TLP (correct palettes do that) and also allows you to change palettes knowing exactly what the end results are going to be ahead of time. Save them with TLP, then load them back into SMILE:

God damn it . . . I feel somewhat inspired to start searching and cracking. Sadly, I have too many projects going already to start anything new.

If I find and crack some of the compression, will someone else do anything with the data? Hmmm... which game to start with???
