| Man, looks like this is turning out to be mostly Christians versus Atheists. Of course that's pretty much what I expected given the locations of our board members, but I didn't expect so many Atheists and agnostics. (I voted agnostic btw. Was raised Catholic but I am at the moment very skeptical about God and religion, and have been so for some time, but Jesus is tha man nonetheless.) | |||

| I'm a mix of Taoism and Goddess worship. Basically I believe that the Goddess weaves the Tao and that I can contact Her and speak to Her with my own personal Tao. Its a bit confusing... |

Is a Catholic and a Wiccan the same thing? No, want it or not, they aren't. Your points are moot in my eyes. Protestants are effectively to the Catholic Church what the original Christians were to the Jews: A break away sect that is quite different. Math, I say I'm a Catholic, then I repeat the last few lines of the Apostle's Creed. |

| Have you ever been to, say, a Lutheran or Episcopalian church? I paid close attention and the nature of the worship seemed nearly identical. Some words in the creeds are different, the songs are different, the ritualism is different. You are operating under the assumption that something separate is by necessity fundamentally different. We are talking about super classes here. Yeah there are some pretty weird sects out there (some probably aren't Christian, though they claim to be. I've heard some people make that case for the Mormons or Jehova's witness), but I'd still lump them in because it saves time. Maybe ||bass will do a separate Christian thread eventually. Hell maybe I'll start one just to save him the trouble. I don't understand how you derived the Algonquian vs. Chinese example. They're both humans, if that's the target superclass. Catholics and Wiccans are in the superclass of people that have a religion.  Unless you're referring to the notion that a philosophy such as Confucianism can be an undertone culturally and affect many things about one's life, but not necessarily be their religion.I'm beginning to feel that religion is much like language. People like to think that there are "pure" forms of languages, but the more I learn about it the more complicated it seems. What once seemed "pure" becomes hazy and indeterminate. In the same way you can put construct the ideal constraints in a religion but people will naturally deviate from that and form idiosyncratic types, sometimes borrowing from other types, as Valentine Revolution has demonstrated. |
