| Hiryuu, can you give all of us who haven't seen Ranma (and the chances of me ever watching all of the hundreds of episodes are very slim) a crash course in it? About a few things? I mean, I know the basics, I know that Ranma and... Um, I forget the name, but his dad fell into the cursed lakes... And now he turns female and wossname turns into a panda... But there are other things I wish I knew but I don't. For example, what exactly is 'Ranko', why one of the other characters turns into a pig (who IS that character, by the way?) and... Yeah. Oh yeah, and is there a main villian in the series? I've only seen one or two episodes, you see. Maybe three. EDIT: Erm. When you DO have time, I mean. Or maybe Anya can explain. Or someone. Oy. | Never seen it myself, actually. Unless I did see it as a kid and I just don't remember, cause I used to say "Ranma!" a lot, in a chibi voice when I was younger. I plan on renting the entire series in a few months, I have a few more animes in front if it that I want to watch first. |

Ranma fell into 'Nyanniichuan' or easily put into English terms...that would be 'Spring of Drowned Girl'. Genma would be Ranma's father and he fell into 'Shonmaoniichuan' which is 'Spring of Drowned Panda'...so yea you've got that down. But there are other things I wish I knew but I don't. For example, what exactly is 'Ranko', why one of the other characters turns into a pig (who IS that character, by the way?) and... Yeah. Oh yeah, and is there a main villian in the series? 'Ranko', in terms of the series in general, is not an actual seperate person by herself...except in a few eps where she was whether a split personality that surfaced (Ep. 3.9, don't ask me why I know the name off the top of my head, it's a good ep.) or if he got split in general (which has happened by Happosai or the one Mirror Mansion trek in the manga...). Actually, it was a nickname that Ranma had to make up when his mother visited to explain his girl side...since he really didn't want her to know about it since he was honor-bound to become a 'man amongst men'...and of course if she ever found out there would be hell to pay, seppeku in this case thanks to Genma. Ryouga Hibiki is the little black piglet, or P-chan as Akane likes to call him (of course she doesn't know that he's an actual guy). He fell into 'Heitouenniichuan' or 'Spring of Drowned Pig'. That was because he tried following Ranma to China after Ranma walked out on a fight on him (actually it wasn't really, he claims it is, the truth is that Ranma waited for three days and Ryouga never showed, he couldn't find the backyard of his house because he has the worst sense of direction in the world, literally). As for main villans...there's plenty of rivals, but no clear villan in the series. Most of that is taken care of by the fact that Genma dropped a bunch of fiancees on him and Ranma being in the middle of it...I think the only exception to that rule was Ryouga...and that was because of the whole fight and bread fued thing...so he's really probably Ranma's top rival. I'll add though...in terms of villans...there have been people such as Pantyhose Tarou (anime/mage), Kirin (Movie 1), Toru (Movie 2), Herb (manga), and probably the worst he's pissed off being Saffron (manga). Excluding Tarou, they're all royalty...so he sure knows how to piss them off. Think the only one he's 'killed' would be Saffron...and it really didn't matter anyways since he he was a Phoenix king anyways (but it did end the fight right then and there). | Ah, well, thank you very much for all that. ^-^ Helps quite a bit. Especially knowing a bit more about Ranko. And yeah, looks more like a series of villians, rather than an overall foe (like Shabranigdu in Slayers, and other examples). Then again, since it has so many series, I'm not at all surprised. So, about the 'alter-ego' Ranko... Is this something that just shows itself every now and again, or is it something that's forced (sounds that way)? Does Ranma EVER enjoy being a girl, or does he continue to loath it throughout the series? Thanks again. ^-^ |

Forced, it's not a now and again thing (except in terms of theoretical cases that are said in fanfics, but that doesn't count). Does Ranma EVER enjoy being a girl, or does he continue to loath it throughout the series? I don't really think he enjoys his curse, but he doesn't really get bent out of shape either whenever it gets triggered (and that's almost daily, actually it might be...which I think is somewhat led by the curse itself, but merely speculation). I think though that it does help him get along better sometimes though. For example, I know that Akane talks better with him usually and doesn't want to maim him as much when he's a she. Think it might be a matter of the fact that a) she's always reminded that she was forcefully engaged to him and b) it's because that's how they met originally, it took a few hours before Akane found out that Ranma was definitely not a she. If he does enjoy it, it's spur of the moment type thing, and more to be a tease than anything. He'd rather be a guy...otherwise why would the whole series be based around him trying to become a full guy again? I think it does expand his somewhat shallow mind a bit in terms of females though because, thanks to Genma, he figured that most girls were weak and were below him and were never really worth the time to mess with. I think he's still got that problem a bit towards the end of the series, but it's definitely a lot better off than it was at the start. So basically, something of an insult to himself to something he can 'live with' towards the end of the series. |
