2600 has some good stuff in it, but if you want to hear the accounts of more original hackers, you should check out some sites they have thrown around the Internet.

For instance,

  • http://www.webcrunchers.com/crunch/ , which is home to John Draper - the most contributing member to the phreaking scene, the guy who made the world's first computer-operated word processor, and one of the original members of the Homebrew Computer Club. THIS guy is a hacker.

  • http://www.kevinmitnick.com/ or http://www.takedown.com/ (if you wanna read about the egotistical moron Tsutomu Shimomura) - Kevin was one of the most well known hackers - why? He was the first to get caught. More than the Internet knows who he is.

  • http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/1886411212/qid=1087664909/sr=8-3/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i3_xgl14/104-1412819-0287911?v=glance&s=books&n=507846 and http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/1886411425/qid=1087664909/sr=8-2/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i2_xgl14/104-1412819-0287911?v=glance&s=books&n=507846 are both good books when you're looking for the history of hacking or just looking for a good story or two. (Number 2 has a great account of phreakers accidentally stumbling onto Nixon's private, closed-circuit bomb shelter phone)

Also, Linus ripped a crapload of his code off of Minux and Unix, so don't mention him as a hacker.

I think that Firefox' interface is so much more handier and nicer than IE's. And after looking at screenshot of Operas interface (yes, official ones), I'm glad I got firefox. I couldn't handle having tabs over back and forward buttons etc, I'm sure that can be changed but we are judging by the original installation aren't we? Oh, that ad in opera must be so annoying since we aren't going to crack it, we are going by the original, FREE, installation.

Actually, the ad in Opera doesn't bother at all. Not one bit, they're funny even, sometimes. And it doesn't create any annoying pop-ups.

I consider myself to be a hacker, but then I have a certain definition of hacker that does not agree with that portrayed by the media. I consider that we have a great deal of hackers on this forum, in various forums.

Hackers are basically your techie people. The people who want to know how things tick, how it all works, why it works that way, etc. In computers, they are quite often security experts. Whether they use this knowledge for good or for bad.... well... some hackers do use things for bad, that's why there's the whole negative thing around the word "hacker". Although generally, these people are referred to as "crackers" or "Black Hat Hackers". But there are hundreds of hackers out there that fix things, improve things, create things, etc, that make life, and computers and such easier. Hackers are not necessarily computer people either, btw.... a great deal of engineers consider themselves to be hackers.

The ROM hackers here are DEFINITELY hackers. The programmers here.... a type of hacker. The people in the Computer Hardware and Software forum... lots of hackers in there.

I'm a hacker, but I'm not "Black Hat" and I'm not a cracker. I'm certainly not a script kiddie. I won't break into your computer, or anybody else's for that matter. If you ask nicely, I'll help you fix your computer, I'll advise on how to secure it better, etc.

I'm a hacker, but not in the way the media portrays hackers. I'm a hacker in the sense that the word was ORIGINALLY used.

I actually saw the pics this morning.

I didn't even mean to, actually. But for some reason one of the French news channels here showed "blurred" shots of the pictures.

...Blurred my ass. Like 10% blurred.

Most of the time hackers have and never will admit that what they do is wrong.
Specially the ones that hide behind education.

Oh i do it cause i want to learn, but what i dont tell you is that after programing that virus, i give the source code out, and write tutorials on all the tricks i learnt in making the virus, even though i never released it, i still wanted people to learn, oh yes i am not naive i certainly dont believe that people wont use this for bad purposes, but i've got to hide behind educational rights so i can do what i do best, and thats give out info, because most of us supposed elite hackers believe all info should be known.
Even though if i was having sex with my wife i certainly wouldn't want it video taped and put on the web, oh no giving out info bout companies is different. What? yes it is different.

    sorry just felt like blabing.
In reality most hackers even though good, are stuck in there own lil world, and cant face reality, no all info should be known.
Because if there whole terminology is used, then every 9 year old should be able to find out how to build a nuke out of a potato.

Or how to make a pipe bomb.
or how to make viruses and the like.

One book i think all hackers that believe all information should be freely accessable should read, is Forbidden knowledge by roger shattuck, a very very deep philosophical book on the course and ideas that maybe just maybe some knowledge is dangerous to be known by any one, and that just the knowledge of how things works changes us.

Thats Forbidden knowledge by roger shattuck, But remember kids its a very adult book, it just doesn't deal with mundane logics of knowledge but very deep dark stuff along the lines of the marques de sade, and other very very nasty things, but none the less its a very good book and us older crowd should read it too it taught me alot.

Any ways. sorry for ranting, its a good book the hackers manifesto but i didn't like it much, cause yet again its another hacker that just can't admit that half the time hackers never do any good for any one, and releasing that information on how to hack this and how to create that to every one makes for script kiddies and black hat hackers.

Ahh, the "Information Wants To Be Free" thing.

Eh, I agree with "Information Wants To Be Free" on some counts, and not on others. It can depend on the information, of course, but I think we all know that information can be used for good or for bad, or for both.

Here's an example of information that can be used for good and bad. A list of commonly used weak passwords, including those on various common hardware (ie, ADSL routers). The GOOD use is that this can alert users and sysadmins to passwords that they may be using that are insecure, and get them to change the password. The BAD use is that it can also be used by a cracker, to fine tune their brute force cracking system, etc, etc.

Now, I found this list immensely useful, being a sysadmin on two small / moderately sized networks in a High School. It helped me to secure the network a little more.

But I can also see how the same list would be bad in the hands of say... a student at the school. Who would probably have a field day going through the passwords trying to get into the Admin account. Fortunately, the admin account is nothing so weak as a default or dictionary password

I'm careful with information I get, and I don't use it to do anything like crack people's networks or PC's.... although I have fantasized about getting a particular lamer off my back, but that's just idle fantasy, I'd never EVER act upon it!

My hacking stuff is used to secure networks, to fix PC's, etc. And I know full well that if the information I know is released to the world... in the name of "education", it'll come back to bite me in the arse.

The fact that you have 'hacking stuff' is what differentiates you from a hacker in the traditional sense -- one who can delve into a sea of cryptic machine codes and manipulate whatever he should see to behave the way he should want it (If you're a cyberpunk fan, Gibson goes way into the philosophy of the mind hacking being the next frontier). Hell, it's even arguable that under the traditional sense of being a hacker, Kevin wasn't one - he used tools that were openly available to anybody who knew how to get them. In the Takedown logs, you can even spy in onto the conversations he had with a man that hooked him up. He didn't make his own tool.

Most hackers are white hats, I define hackers as people who really are intrested in computers, and have alot of knowledge about them. Hackers who use premade programs and such is usually called script kidde, personally I say that script kiddies is as dangerous as a "real hacker".

I know alot of security flaws in the older OS's, I rembember how I did go around things on my school computers ages ago, but I never destroyed anything. The defination hacker have mostly been used in the media for people who is breaking in other servers or just regular computers. And there is many types of Hackers.

Most of the time, sites that have been hacked usually have been hacked becuse of poor security. Or if a employed "have opened the door" with the help of a trojan, most damage done to computers in Companies is becuse of "careless" users.

I always have been fascinated by breaking into other computers. But if I ever did that, I wouldn't damage anything...

Considering that I will be away for four days next month...

Heh, but I will have fun. Without the internet...
