You people are making me want to play this game again. I used to be pretty mediocre at it, but I think I can do better now.

After a bit of thinking, the following ideas seem pretty reasonable:
Protoss:
Zealots/Scouts - Pretty solid all around damage producer
Reavers/Dragoons - There are many things that Reavers would be great with, but they're all in different tech tree branches.
Dark Templar/Corsairs - An old favorite of mine, has a disadvantage in having units in different parts of the tech tree, but I'm including it becouse it seems easy to transition to from Zealots/Scouts. A few High Templar probably would patch up the weaknesses to this nicely.
Reavers/Arbiters/Scouts-or-Dragoons - It's higher in the tech tree than I think is good, but something about Stasis + Scarabs (and possibly Psionic storm) just makes me drool.

Terran:
Marines/Medics - It's old, I know, but hell, not much can really compete with that except either units doing 40 damage per hit (20+ if ranged or fast) or units doing large splash damage. I'm going to hope I'm good enough to see that comming with a comstat.
Goliaths/Siege Tanks - Hell, that's old too, but all it lacks is speed. I can't think of any units that can beat this, only tactics. Shame Terran doesn't have the Arbiter.

Zerg:
Lurkers/Mutalisks - Mutalisks aren't the best of choices here, but any more waiting would subject this stategy to Siege Tanks and Reavers and the like, which make Lurkers go splat. Add Guardians if those obvious counters don't show up with support from Goliaths or the like.

You know what, screw Zerg. They're a swarming based race but I can't figure out anything very simple to use with them. I suppose the whole Hatchery type thing is supposed to help that, but I'm not great at micromanagement, and this has to work on the battlefeild.

Anyway, I'm playing theorycraft, as some call it. What do you folks who actually play much nowadays think?

Dark Archons are great when you want mostly Protoss and a few from another race, but if your opponent lets you get all the way through tech trees, you might as well have finished it twice as fast and massed Carriers when he was still on Vultures or whatever.

And, for good measure, here's an unbeatable Zerg vs Terran strategy/tactic that's way too high in the tech tree and requires inhuman micromanagement:

Defilers, Ultralisks, and Hydralisks.
Simply use Dark Swarm on your army and Consume the Hydralisks as needed. The only Terran unit that can fire into Dark Swarm is the Firebat. Firebats do concussive damage, which means 1/4 as much against Ultras, without counting their armor. It also does 1/2 damage against Hydras, which is the main reason they're your food instead of Zerglings (A pack of stimmed Firebats after a com sweep could zap all your lings, otherwise, which would leave you stranded under a dark swarm with some units that are crappy outside of one).

You could make a picture box with the background of a scrollbar, two buttons for the arrows, and an image inside the picture box for the bar. Use the drag move, drag drop, and mouse down events of the picture box for scrolling, and the arrow buttons for changing the adress by one.

Pretty good tutorial. *gives a thumbs up*

I noticed that you mentioned an object that should've been forced horizontile that wasn't. I'll go change that in the wiki. You're right about the multiply by 16 part, though.

Personally, I recomend using the object navigation buttons in the upper right for finding objects, like when you first start editing a level.

About the graphics: The hard part is actually figuring out where to put the graphics on the screen. Tell people to find the game's data for where it puts them.

About the pointers: I know how to change the pointers, but I don't know how to figure out where to send them. I'm working on that though. If someone figured out a way to expand the ROM, however, that'd be even better.

Still, very good, people should read it.

I don't think dealing with all of those would be all that hard. If you've documented all of them, then someone can just pull a Squash Monster and turn your documentation into a data file that tells a program how to deal with all of the different event commands.

I understood FLCL.. well, everything except the manga scene in the first episode. I had the subtitled version, you see, and that's not very compatable with that scene.

FLCL was bloody great.

I'm one of the major problems people. My computer completely stopped working after installing SP2. (The guy at the computer repair place said that SP2 wasn't even supposed to be released through Windows Update).

So... definately back up things.

Lunar Magic has a feature, called ExGFX, that lets you add more graphics to the game with almost no limit. I don't think you need such a thing - it's overkill, a bit like sandblasting a soup cracker.

I decided to give this whole spriting thing a try. I kind of like it, but it takes more time than I probably have (looks like a frame per hour, at fastest). Fun sounding game though, good luck.

Holey Brainfuck! How on earth can anyone stand to draw that many sprites?

On a different note; could you describe the different characters' appearance?

Fusion breaks with the Metriod style and tells you where to go. So does Zero Mission, but unlike Fusion, it doesn't force you to go anywhere. You can sequence break Zero Mission all over the place. Metroid is nothing without its sequence breaking.

Zero Mission is better.

Without the sequence breaking, Metroid is stripped down to two things: blowing stuff up and exploring (which you can't do much of in Fusion, becouse the computer tells you where you need to go). Most of the reward behind exploring is sequence breaking. As for blowing stuff up - other series are better at that than Metroid.

Don't get me wrong, Fusion is a great game, despite missing most of what makes Metroid, well, Metroid. It just can't compete with a proper Metroid title.

So, people like girls that are half human and half cat, right?

Now, we need the human part. I mean, otherwise you've just got a cat. Those are cute, but not in the manner we're talking about here (please, for the love of whatever you believe in, don't refute that point).

So, we could agree that the human part is the part that makes it good.

So I've got an idea. How about, rather than one half human and the other half cat, we could have one half human and ...

...

*dramatic pause*

...

...the other half human.
(ba-dum-psh, or however you onomatopoeiaticize that.)

Actually, cat girls are nice. Girls in general are nice. I'm glad half the population is female.

It'd be nice if he explained how they all were supposed to look. I mean, how are pixel artists supposed to know if they're capable of any of the characters without knowing what the characters look like?

The monster spawn rate is based on the number of people, and all tha idiots will just sit right outside of town, so those areas get nuts. It's not so bad around Kerning and Perion, though.

I'm a level 15 mage named Tolmar. Well, level 14, but I need to kill four mushrooms or something and I'll be at 15.

Eggvine? Insert ASM? *cracks up* What do you think I am, competent?

Anyway, you could make deserts without exgfx. Just discard some other graphics. I was actually planning on doing that a lot with the hack I was planning back when I suffered from delusions of having free time.

Anyway, your hack still looks mighty spiffy, cpubasic.
