Whoops! I meant points, not coins.

And I think the problem with Bowser was that I have the time set as something other than "unlimited." I put Bowser in another level, set the timer to unlimited, and it works perfectly. For some strange reason though, when I set the timer to unlimited in my original Bowser's castle, the instant you start the level you die and get a "time up" message! Very weird, but I'll keep screwing around for a while.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys.

Hate to bump an old thread, but it seemed to make as much sense (if not more) to reply to it than to make a new one about the same thing.

Anyway, after months of wait, the hack none of you have been waiting for is finally here!

So yeah, I guess waiting three months to release it kind of defeated my whole concept of making it a "mini-hack" in the first place, but at least I didn't put it on "permanent ice," right? Eugh, I hate that phrase... so many half-way decent-to-amazing hacks wasted by it...

Anyway, all that aside, here it is, complete in IPS for your patching pleasure (for use only with US SMB3 PRG 0 ROM).

As far as I have tested, it's complete and bug free, including a somewhat original ending (considering the most advanced thing I know how to edit is hex).

If anyone sees anything nutty while they're playing, or if it just doesn't work (and it damn well better), just send me a line and I'll see what the devil is wrong with it.

Well, anyway, here you go, ladies and yentlemen:

Let me know what you think!

Wow, thanks for that recommendation!

I just played through the patched version of the game, though, and found something strange...

When I play through my original ROM, the last pipe in the castle sends you exiting from a pipe in the ceiling of the next room.

When I play the patched version, Mario comes up from the middle of the floor as though it were a pipe, and when he reaches the top, he sits down (like when you press down to slide on a hill).

No idea what happened to that, but I'll screw around with it some more (and maybe somebody here has a better idea of what happened).

Thanks again for the good word, folks!

EDIT: As far as I can tell, I've fixed the problem in the castle. But we'll see... oh, how we'll see indeed...

Very cool. Although I wonder what it would look like without the, whadayacall, edge-enhancements...

You really put the ripped graphics to very good use in this hack, taking elements from other Mega Man games and using them in ways that weren't even intended in the original -- Magnet Man's theme turning into a metal factory, and so on. And combining elements from more than one level from even more than one game was also very unique, and overall really changed the game into something totally new, which I liked a lot.

Also, the simple fact that I can count the number of full Mega Man hacks on one hand is something else I commend you for.

On the other hand, I have to echo some of the complaints of the other members. The weird modifications to Mega Man seemed to make things way too dificult, even on Easy mode, and this is coming from someone who beats Mega Man games from start to finish whenever I get a free half-hour! So I'm not a novice by any means, and the Mega Man series makes up almost my entire list of favorite games.

Barely being invincible after getting hit was annoying as hell, as were a few of the enemies that just keep shooting and shooting and are literally impossible to destroy without taking a lot of damage yourself (the cannon-armed guys in Flash Man's stage, for example).

That aside, I didn't mind the level designs themselves too much -- most of them were pretty inventive and different, actually -- aside from a few "precise jumps" (like the row of spikes early on in Flash Man's stage, I think) that really force you to play using save states -- one of my biggest pet peeves in hacks.

One more thing: there were a few spots that seemed a little glitched. When you beat a robot master, there are weird squiggly things next to the abbreviation for your new weapon that look out of place and ameteur. Also, there was something weird and garbled when the door opened up to enter Wood Man's boss room.

I'm not bashing you either; I really like the hack! I just feel if you made a few changes it would be "complete" and fully playable and, more importantly, enjoyable.

All in all, a very good effort, and a few minor tweaks here and there will really make all the difference, believe me. Good luck!

Thank you! That was driving me nuts! And to think I was just about to PM infidelity!

Anyway, I've beated all the levels up to Wily 1 in the most recently-released patch and they're all pretty good so far. I'll post again after I beat the game (or to the extent that the game can be beaten, I guess, since it freezes at the end, I understand).

I don't know why. Personally, I don't see the point of even bringing a hack to the attention of the public if you 1) don't have enough completed to show off screen shots, or 2) don't have the motivation and enthusiasm to see it through in the first place.

What really pisses me off, though, is people who do just that and then decide to selfishly keep whatever progress they made from everyone else. I'd understand if they intended to use some of their features in a future hack, but about 95% of the time it's just people who lead very uninteresting lives needing to make "dramatic exits" in order to feel good about themselves when people say they'll miss him or her or that they were looking forward to their work. It's more the fact that they feel they need to make an whole new thread to say that they are leaving the "scene" (eugh) and are destroying everything they teased everyone with in the process. It's actually pretty pathetic that they need to get attention that way, but whatever, it's none of my business.

The level design looks really nice! Congratulations, I look forward to playing it.

One question, though: aside from Mario's palette, is there anything really "gothic" about the hack? Just curious.

Really glad to hear you're continuing the hack. Mega Man is hands-down my favorite series, and Mega Man 3 is my favorite Mega Man game.

And:

There's something I really like about this screen shot. I can't pinpoint quite what, but I like it.

I always wondered why those enemies -- who were pretty cool, I thought -- only showed up in one level of the original game. They seem to fit in really well with Spark Man's level.

Keep us posted.

My short (but complete) hack is available at my saucy new web page:

http://www.andrewsylvester.com/

As a refresher: Super Mario Bros. in the Mystery of the Flying Fish -- a mini-hack (a term I coined just because, well, the whole game is condensed into one world, simply because one world is more than enough to keep my interest in hacking the game AND playing a hack). It's weird, it's different, it's a masterpiece! Well, in terms of my output anyway. Give it a try, won't you?

Hmm... all this Mega Man data flooding in makes me want to steal -- I mean -- borrow it and make some kind of simplistic enemy stats editor or something...
