#8 is baffling me... must... get...answer!

Sorry Heian, I hate to be the one to tell you this (but I sort of have to be):
That's not it!
It is a reasonable answer, and if I was guessing it would have been my first guess, but it's not what I'm looking for.

Concerning number eight:
Okay, I'll answer a few yes or no questions about what the pills are like, so you might get a better idea what you have to work with. I won't just give you a clear hint though, eight is worth 4 points!

Alright, since both you and Heian went down similar paths with riddle ten, I'm going to give a hint:
Tony completely finished and put his first mug on the table before he started the second mug. Hope that helps!

Riddles seven, eight, and ten are still up for grabs. Figure them out!

edit: Dang it Smallhacker, I spent too much time making this darn gif and you beat me to answering! Well, I'll post it anyway, since I took the time to make it and everything...

Let x = any number

As you can see, the reason you always get 5 is because you always subtract the number you started with at the end.

I don't have any insightful comments into the effects of scary movies on a child's fragile mind, but I can tell about this:

My family and I went to go see Spiderman 2 since it had just came out again in the cheap $1.50 theater. Usually I have to go tell someone to focus the screen, or that they have the sound way too loud, but luckily this time neither of those things happened.

What did happen was fairly annoying though -- a woman sat in front of use with three children, and only one of which actually realized they were at a movie and watched it. One of the other two insisted on asking his mom random questions about whatever was on his mind, while the youngest one decided that instead of watching the movie, she would stand up, turn around, and watch me. Obviously this was distracting. Then the baby started crying behind us...

Typical of a cheap theater, I guess.

Posted on 10-26-04 06:33 AM, in Bush or Kerry Link
In the 2000 election, Bush went into election day neck-and-neck with Gore. Even though the polls were that close, Gore won the popular vote by a fairly large chunk in the end. As we all know, Bush just barely won the electoral vote, and won the election. This year the polls are also a dead heat -- one candidate will probably not be more than 1 or 2 percentage points ahead going into election day. Although the electoral college can greatly distort the outcome that the polls predict, the popular vote trend from 2000 seems to be a hopeful sign for Kerry, and a bad sign for Bush. Also, the polls only take into account those who are considered "likely" voters, and among all young voters Kerry currently leads by 20%.

Judging only from this, if the young vote comes out for Kerry, I would expect Bush to lose. If not, it may very well go the other way. Considering what young people in the U.S. have at stake this time around, (war, possible draft, all that good stuff...) Could I imagine that the polls might be just a little bit off again this year? Maybe?

Check it out if you want -- it has a lot of advice from experienced rom-hackers.

If you finish it, do it for your own gratification and use -- not just so other people can use it. As for the usefulness of it, I would conclude that anything that increases organization and efficiency is worthwhile in rom hacking.

Myself -- I'd rather just convert a rom's hex-dump into an excel spreadsheet so I could make and use my own *specialized* vba routines and macros. I won't lie and say I expect to use Palette Thing myself, because I probably wouldn't.

I don't want you to take that last remark the wrong way, however. This is more about you than it is about us. My decision of whether or not to use your program should have no bearing on whether or not you should finish it. A project's importance should always connect with its maker. You didn't tell us whether there is something else that you could be doing -- something you would rather be working on. That's why I would only recommend finishing "Palette Thing" if you would find it particularly useful. If you do decide to finish it, I will give it a test-run if that makes you feel any better!

Whatever you decide, good luck!

Amazing...

Looking at these screenshots, I truly get the feeling of a "real" work in progress. This hack isn't just a copy of the original with a few new blocks and graphics here and there -- you've set out to create something that doesn't rely on the original levels as a skeleton, and that undertaking is something I must admire.

I know you've probably already said this somewhere, but... at your current rate, when do you *guess* that the whole thing will be completed? You know there's nothing like playing a completed work, with nothing left to go. I'll be waiting for it whenever you finish. Good luck, and keep at it for yourself!

I think you've hit the nail on the head with those statements. From your first post, it was hard to determine what your feelings were about the project, but now I can see that you could simply find the act of working on the project enjoyable. That is what's most important in rom hacking, and the desire to see others using a program that you release is a strong fuel.

By the way, you mentioned in the first post that the program would have to configured differently for each different rom -- I know that certain roms have some palettes that a stored in a fairly complex way. In Zelda II, editing Link's colors doesn't completely change them; if you use a spell, they flash in a cycle and go back to the original palette. These colors for the cycle, and the "reappearing" original palette were stored in a different place than the rest of the palettes, and more was required to find them than a hex-editor search because they weren't stored in order or together.

My questions are: What games will the program be configured to use if you decide to release this project? Just how much flexablility will this program have, perhaps with situations like the one I described above?

Whatever the case, I want to wish you luck with the whole thing -- just make sure you do have fun working on it!

Now for my answers...

1) The woman was found dead on a traffic island, killed in an automobile accident.

6) The crew noticed that one of the magazines being used as a prop had a reference to the soap opera or a picture of one of their actors/actresses on it.

7) 128. The pattern is adding progressive numbers with digits in numerical order. To the first 1 you add 12 (one-two) and get 13. To 13 you add 3 (three) and get 16. To 16 you add 45 (four-five) and get 61. To 61 you add 67 (six-seven) and it gives you the mystery number 128. If you add 89 (eight-nine) to that it gives you the last number 217. I don't understand why when three was added it was alone though.

8) If a pilot was rogue he wouldn't be following commands. The command given wasn't for the rogue pilot, but rather for another pilot above him. To stop the lower pilot from bombing Germany, the higher pilot was ordered to bomb the lower pilot first. That's why the bomb didn't hit the ground, it hit the rogue pilot instead.

Darn riddles... now my head hurts.

Actually I just googled transparent gif and found http://www.gifworks.com/. It's a webpage that'll fix your gifs anyway you want. I wish I had a program on my own computer that would do it though, that would be less of a hassle.

6) A television in a scene on the soap opera was actually playing the soap opera itself, or a commercial for it came on. (I haven't watched too many soap operas so I don't know if they ever show TVs or not.)

8) If a pilot was rogue he wouldn't be following commands. The command that was given was to another pilot to stop the bomb from hitting Germany, so he intercepted the bomb.

10) Monica used her speed and agility to cheat in a race in which it wasn't required.

What happened to number 9?

More of my answers:

13) They share Bernadette as a sister.

14) Since a lot of these riddles have to do with death, I'm gonna say that the man's friend was dead.

Darn, that is a tough question.

Of course, every one of us would choose to let the innocent person live, if there was another, better alternative that would stop the suffering of millions later on. I don't think the question was raised with that in mind however. If my only choice was to kill the innocent woman now, to stop terrible events in the future -- and I *know* that if I don't do that precise thing, those terrible events will happen, I believe I'd have to do it.

Keep in mind that this child prevented from being born isn't actually Hitler, just like him, so you're not actually changing the course of events that have occured via "time-travel" or anything. You're altering your own future, like you could with any decision in your life. Look at it this way, if you had the choice to push a button and kill an innocent woman, or to push another button that lets thousands upon thousands of other innocent people die and suffer, which would you push?

Thankfully our daily decisions aren't presented to us in such a way. We don't have the gift of such dreadful foresight, and for that I have to be thankful.
