Hello everyone! I'm new as a user on this board, but I've visited the Rom-Hacking thread for a few months. I'm registering mostly because I'm interested in learning more about rom-hacking, hex-editing, and asm language. Don't get me wrong; I'm not going to ask a lot of questions - I'll probably just read threads to learn more, and speak up when I have something valid or useful to ask/say.

About my life: I'm in college, and I plan on being a math and science teacher. I like tennis and baseball, and reading. I still play video games, especially with my younger brother. I have a girlfriend I plan on marrying in the future, and she's going to be a teacher as well. I'm a Christian, a Democrat, I'm not perfect, and I know no one else is perfect either. Oh yeah... I've got red hair, and I'm proud of it!

There you go! That's my introduction of myself, and I wish everyone the best!

Hey, welcome to the boards from a fellow newbie, Masako! It's great to see that there are already friendly people out here welcoming us newbies in, instead of running us off.

Hex-editing? I know a little, but I'm here hoping to eventually learn more. It looks like a good place to discuss it, anyway. Welcome again, and good luck with all that you do, Masako!

There is a city of truth, and a city of lies. A person from the city of truth may only tell the truth, while a person from the city of lies may only lie. You are on a journey to find the city of truth. Tired and weary, you are nearing the end of your journey when you come to a fork in the road. There is an old man standing there, next to a sign. The sign reads:

"One of the two paths in front of you leads to the city of truth, while the other leads to the city of lies. The old man standing here is from one of these two cities. You may ask this man ONE question, and he will answer. Then you must choose a path and take it, and never come back to this place."

The riddle is... what would your question be?

(The question cannot be two questions in one sentence, such as, "Is the sky blue and which path takes me to the city of truth?" That sentence contains two questions!)

That's very, very close! But watch how you phrase the question, or you won't get an answer you can use. If you ask him that, he'll just *say*, "The city of truth," and you still won't know which path to take. Oh well, that was so close let's just say you got it. You're fast!

Yep. Now you've officially got it!

You're right, sorry for being too picky.
The question I would ask is, "Which of these two paths leads to the city you came from?" just to avoid all confusion. I'm a bit of a perfectionist I guess. I'll try to avoid that if I do another riddle.

ALL RIDDLES IN THREAD

(Seven has not been solved.)

(Original post) Riddle number one:

Always falling, always flying -
Always balanced in this fashion.
Always facing toward its partner -
Silent, quiet, void of passion.

What is it? 2 pts
SOLVED by Smallhacker!

(Added 09-16-04) Riddle number two:

The first two letters of a certain word refer to a man, while the first three letters of the word refer to a woman. The first four letters again refer to a man, but the whole word refers to a woman. The first two, three, and four letters of this word are each words of their own. None of these words are names, and they're all English.

What is the word? 2 pts
SOLVED by Heian-794!

(Added 09-16-04) Riddle number three:

A farmer has a fox, a goose, and a bag of grain. He must get all three across a river, but his boat is so small that he can only carry one of them at a time. If left unattended, on the same side of the river as the goose, the fox will eat the goose. If left unattended, on the same side of the river as the grain, the goose will eat the grain. (Nothing will run away if unattended.)

How can he get them all to the other side of the river, with nothing being eaten? 2 pts
SOLVED by MorbidMolly!

(Added 10-11-04) Riddle number four:

You have a three-gallon bucket, a five-gallon bucket, and a source of water.

How can you accurately measure four gallons of water with these items? 2 pts
SOLVED by Heian-794 and Timmy Turner!

(Added 10-14-04) Riddle number five:

The more of them you take, the more of them you leave behind.

What are they? 2 pts
SOLVED by APH Striker!

(Added 10-14-04) Riddle number six:

KING ROW RAGE RACK GAIN

What do these words have in common? 2 pts
SOLVED by Heian-794!

(Added 10-18-04) Riddle number seven:

People who have it don't tell. People who get it don't know. People who find out they have it don't want it.

What is it? 6 pts

(Added 10-18-04) Riddle number eight:

You were given two bottles of pills, one labeled "Bottle A" and one labeled "Bottle B". The pills in these bottles are identical, except that if you take the wrong amount of either one you will die. You must take one of each pill each day, and no extra, or you will die. You already have a pill from bottle A in your hand, but when you try to get a pill from bottle B, two B pills spill out into your hand with the A pill and you lose track of which pills are which. You can't just throw the three pills away and get new ones because you have to take every last one eventually. You can't afford to get more.

What can you do? 4 pts
SOLVED by Heian-794!

(Added 10-22-04) Riddle number nine:

It belongs to you, but others use it more.

What is it? 2 pts
SOLVED by Smallhacker!

(Added 10-22-04) Riddle number ten:

Tony bets Ransdell a week's salary that he can drink two large mugs full of beer before Ransdell can drink one small shot glass full. The conditions are that neither man can touch or move the other one's mugs/glass, and Ransdell can't start drinking from his shot glass until Tony finishes his first mug and sits it on the table. Since Ransdell is the faster drinker, and he appears to have a clear advantage in the contest, he happily accepts the wager. After the men complete this contest however, Ransdell owes Tony a week's salary.

How did this happen? 3 pts
SOLVED by Jagori!

(Added 11-01-04) Riddle number eleven:

Each spot in this square can be separated from all the others simply by drawing two more squares into the picture.

Where should they be drawn? 4 pts (for the effort involved)
SOLVED by NSNick!

"Would the left path take me to your city?" That should do it. If he says yes it's the city of truth, and if he says no it's the city of lies.

Ahhh... thanks for telling me. In fact, I was just following Masako's lead, and giving each riddle its own separate thread. I see why you'd want them all in one though!

(I'm so proud, i'm a Micro-Goomba now! )

Hey, I'm first to welcome Tailsixs!

Welcome to the boards Tailsixs. Most people on this board are friendly, just make sure you read through the FAQs. Is there a particular reason you registered, or was it just to get into the discussions? I'm here to learn more about rom-hacking myself. Well - whatever the case, good luck with whatever you do!

Hey, I was just wondering where I can look up those terms you all are refering to:

Leeters, lamers, AOL-Speakers, trolls...

I want to make sure I don't do anything I shouldn't, and knowing what all the bad things are will help me to do that. Thanks!

Sorry Gavin, it's not a shadow, but that's also a good guess.

Congratulations Smallhacker, the moon is the answer! Lame-guess or not, you got it right...

The moon is always trying to fly away from the earth, while it is constantly falling down to it as well... (that's kind of creepy if you think about it - if something hit the moon and slowed it down it would fall to earth! ) The equalibrium that exists between it "falling" down and "flying" away keeps it in orbit. Of course, the earth is the moon's "partner" in space - and only one side of the moon ever faces us. As for the last line of the riddle, we all know that there is nothing on the moon to make any sound or to have any passion.

Well that sums it up! Thanks for guessing, and I'll post another riddle in this thread soon!

Hello everyone, I feel that there are some topics that many of us "beginning hackers" would truly appreciate having some guidance on.

I know that several of you are virtually professionals when it comes to hex-editing, asm hacking, and rom hacking in general. Even those of you who aren't quite professionals still know more than most of the newcomers on this board - therefore I'm going to ask some of the questions that are on my mind.

-How did you start learning to hex-edit?
-How did those of you who understand asm language go about learning it?
-What is the best way, in your opinion, to attack rom hacking in general?
-Do you have any other suggestions about this learning process - at all?

I believe that other learning hackers share these same questions, and would be grateful for some original, non-referential advice concerning these issues.

Hey, welcome Culotte. These message boards are mostly filled with reasonable people, so just have fun! Oh yeah Kario, sometimes newbies welcome newbies so they can practice posting, I think. At least that's what I'm doing - when I registered yesterday, I was welcomed by newbies and veterans alike, so I guess I'm returning the favor as well.

Thanks a lot Googie, those two sites are a backbone containing a lot of rom hacking knowledge, and anyone visiting this thread wanting to learn will definitely want to visit them. Most of us here, however - even beginning hackers - will have already stumbled upon those two sites before finding this thread. That's why I changed the wording around a bit in the original post, so old - well distributed - information isn't recycled so much.

With all the talent I have seen the past few months browsing these boards, I'm sure that some of you have very different perspectives on the best ways to learn this stuff. What I'm getting at, I guess, is try to skip the absolute basics - fundamentals you can find anywhere. I know sharing know-how isn't something rom hackers do too much, so I don't expect a huge reply. I just really want to learn more, and I don't plan on cluttering things with another thread like this.

Oh yeah, thank you too Xtreme984 - don't want to leave you out!

Actually, one popular way to describe the moon's orbit is to say that it "falls around" the earth. The definition of falling is to be accelerated downward (toward the center of the earth,) and this is precisely what keeps the moon from flying off through space in a tangential line.

This one, a small child would get before an adult, I believe. The answer is "nothing", right?

(I had to edit because I thought your header and signurature were each separate riddles! )

Thanks Jaspile, that was very helpful, and I could tell it came from experience. That makes anyone's advice much more trustworthy in my eyes. Your reply is an example of the kind of stuff I was hoping for when I posted this thread.
