First I'd like to say I've been using the newbie sticky, and it has been helpful, but I'm running into trouble.

I'm trying to use the Super Mario 2 World 1 ExGFX. I've been successful in getting it to appear. I used the map16 to have the graphics appear in the 16x16 tile editor. Now, I've been trying to do 2 things, but I'm having trouble. The smb2 graphics of a plant, keeps saying it's a cement block. I figured out how to change it to become one of the bushes, OR so I thought. When I have the mouse hang over the graphic, it says it's a bush. So, I add the tree into my level. I go to play the level, and the tree is like a stone block. I can't move through it, and I can stand on the tree. I'm having the same problem with the red doors from smb2. they're stone blocks. I've spent an hour trying to figure out how to use Extended Animation Frames, but it's like a foriegn language. The sticky really doesn't explain and help with everything step by step. Yes, I'm a newb to the Animation Frames, but so far, I think I've progressed very well. Please, could someone explain step by step, how to make a tree from smb2 as a bush from smw, and a door from smb2 to a door from smw. Thank You! :-)

Posted on 09-13-04 05:48 PM, in Having Backround Trouble Link
I'm running into another problem.

Backrounds.

I want to create backrounds from smb1 and 2. I've downloaded some ExGFX from the link that this site has. Now some of the .zip's contain more than one map16, EX "map16.bin" "map16g.bin" I've been using the one without the "g" to insert the 16x16 tile editor. Now, some seem to appear, while some don't. This is what I did for smb2world1 ExGFX, I hope I've been on the right page

I renamed "smb2world1.bin" to "ExGFX80bin", and I placed it in the ExGFX folder
I moved "map16.bin" to where my rom was, and I loaded it into my 16x16 tile editor. I scrolled down to the 3rd page in the tile editor, pressed F3, it was inserted, but look like garbage. I hit F9 to save it.

Then I went into the Red Mushroom, and checked off the bypass thingy, and where it said FG, I scrolled down to ExGFX80. Than everything on my level turned into rubbish. But when I went into the 16x16 tile editor, and went to the third page, all the smb2world1 graphics were not garbage anymore! But some of the original graphics on the first 2 pages of the 16x16 tile editor were garbage. Is that normal?

Now, what I just described, I tried to do the exact same thing for the smb1 ExGFX. But all it comes out as is garbage. I'd like to know if I'm on the right page, or if I'm missing a step, doing something wrong etc etc. I extremely appreciate your help and advice. Thank You.

also, where can I find the cherries from mario 2? they're not included in the ExGFX of smb2 world 1. Also, how can I edit the sprites? It seems I can only edit backround items on the 16x16 tile editor. I used CTRL/SHIFT/PGDWN to unlock the 16x16 tile editor, and I wanted to use the phantoms from smb2. I appreciate your help guys!! Thank You for helping me out!!

Ok, I know how to edit backround items, but not the backround itself

The ExGFX that I've obtained are for backround items. I'm trying to find out how to create, or even find, backrounds from smb 1,2 & 3. Also, I have block tool. I have smb1 blocks inserted into my level, but, of course, I would surely love to know how to make the blocks breakable from underneath when your big. I have the program, but can't find out how to use it correctly. So, if I could get some information about creating, or finding, level backrounds, and how to make the blocks breakable form underneath, I'll be extremely greatfull!! Thank you for your help once again guys!!

All I've been reading is asm this, and asm that. The ideas that I have for this game, obviously require asm hacking. But I don't know what it is. Is it a program? is it something in Lunar Magic itself? I've searched the forums here, and no one tells you where to find, or exactly what asm is. Could someone please point me in the right direction. I have so many ideas, but I need the tools and knowledge to do so. I've gotten so far in such little time! Thank you for your help!! :-)

I'm so confused.

I have two levels

1 level has smb1 backround items

The other level has smb2 backround levels

Now, for some reason, using the 16x16 tile editor, when I load up a map16 for my level, let's say smb2, it comes up. So, I press F9 to save. Then I go to work on my smb1 level. When I get there, all the backround items are screwed up!!! So I was like, ok I'll bring up the map16 files for that, maybe I did something wrong. So I opened the 16x16 tile editor, and placed them in there, and the graphics were fixed for that level. So I hit F9 again, and it saved. I go to my smb2 level, and the graphics are screwed up again. I'm so lost!!!! Please please help!! Obviously I'm missing a step :-( *sigh* Thanks for your help!! :-)

I think they're overwriting eachother. Cause they use pages 3-4 cause of the 2 map16 files "map16" "map16g" I'll see if I can fix it. Also, how can you erase a map16 page?

ok that erase tip worked. But I have encountered a huge problem. I had the 16x16 tile editor on page 3, and I was cycling through the level pages with pgup & pgdwn. I've noticed that certain levels share the same pages. The main prime example. My two levels 106-smb1 and l03-smb2 share page 3 on the 16x16 tile editor. I placed smb1 graphics on page 3, and smb2 graphics on page 4. Either level, will not show the correct graphics on page 4, it only lets page 3 work correctly. Am I missing someting here?

so your saying I can only use one page per level? is that right? and I don't know how to assign pages to levels, cause both levels share page 3. How can I point my levels ot certain map16 pages? Thank you for your speedy replies!

Thank you for the helpful information!!

I've got another question. How do you create your own ExGFX files. I ask because I wan to draw my own shyguys, cherries, and other bad guys from smb2. I've been trying by using my original smb2world1.bin and making a copy of it, and calling it. ExGFX90.bin but they're appearing in the wrong places. Sometimes the items are glowing, or they're not even connected to eachother. I'm experienced with tile editors so that's not a problem. I hope you can answer that one for me too!! Oh, and would I have to create my own map16 for my custom ExGFX? and if so, how do I do that as well! I can't thank you enough for all your help. I've masterd block tool now, and my graphic problems are almost solved!! I'll be waiting for your reply! :-)

Thank you for the pictures! They help out alot. But there's something wrong. My smb1 level, I have an ExGFX of backround objects, such as the bricks, coin blocks, coins, etc etc, installed in my level. Now I went to a blank page on my 16x16 tile editor, still in the same level I remind you, and tried to install the ExGFX## I created, "original smb1 bricks, coin blocks, goombas, mushrooms, etc etc. When I installed them on the blank page of the 16x16 tile editor, my level with all the smb1 graphics got all screwed up!! I can't figure this out. I'm doing everything everybody has been telling me step by step. Is there a certain thing I must select to have mutiple ExGFX files installed into 1 level, without it getting screwed up? And, I was on one of my custom levels, and I decided to wipe out page10 of the backround for that level, and create a whole new one. Now when I scroll through the levels of the game, a good portion of all the backrounds are all screwed up! Is that supposed to happen? Could you explain everything I described, as to what I'm doing wrong? Can't thank you guys enough!

I want to change the goombas. one level, they're the smw ones, the other level, are my own custom design. I have the graphics in my tile editors, I'm just lost from there. So, how can I have one level of goombas the original way, and the other level, my own custom goombas? Thank You for your replies! This will help me out alot, because it will also help me to edit other sprites! Thanks again!
