then it would be equally stupid

I'd read threads

and they would never get marked as read

until I didn't visit the forum for like 3 hours or something.....

cookies are the only practical method besides what's in place now... hwihc works fine... if you aren't a lazy tard....

the first post in the thread explains the thread pretty well I think....

additionally if you can't give a general idea of what the thread is about with 255 characters

you have other issues that can't be solved by another 255 characters....

I'm kinda curious as to what the hell you're even talking about....

a "read bit"

you can't just put a 0 / 1 flag on the end of a thread as to whether or not it's been read or there are new posts

cause then

it will only have a NEW Icon between when the last person posted and when the next person clicks on it....

you'd have to have a "Bit" For each thread, for each user......

and the only way to know if it should be set or not.... is if you use..... timestamp...

I mean let's get real.....

UPDATE threadbits set new = 1 where userid!=lastposter

that's XXXX (however many users) updates

EVERYTIME SOMEONE POSTS......

and it would be a metric assload of records....

2000 users.... 2000 threads.... that's ... 4,000,000 friggin records..... 2000 of which would hav eto be updated EVERY TIME someone posted

and best I recall... Acmlm's board had 18000 threads or so before the DB was lost....

then when you load forum.php it has to select from threadbits for EVERY FRIGGIN thread shown on the screen ... for your user id......

then when a new user registers you have to throw XXX #of thread records into that table... all with 1 set... etc... etc...

I don't think elaborating on this example further would serve any purpose... as it's obviously way more work than it's worth to code... and would require TONS of SQL overhead to actually function

vBull does use cookies too... cause I've used alot of them before.. when you go from PC to PC the icons don't match.....

it is simply impractacle and would cause way too much overhead to have a thread specific system stored locally in the database.....

2000 updates every time someone posts a new post.... that's stupid.......

Hello,

We've received these two notices from our network provider this afternoon:

Dear Valued Customer, On Saturday, March 20th, 2004, the AboveNet NY1
(lga1) facility began having connectivity issues at 2:00 (EST). We are
currently investigating the cause of this issue and will continue to update
you with additional information until this issue is resolved.

Dear Valued Customer, We are still experiencing network connectivity issues
at NY1 (lga1). We have located the problem and are in the process of
correcting this issue.

>From what I can see things went down completely around 2 PM EST and came
online again around 3 PM EST. Since 3 PM EST things have been going up and
down [not stable]. Apparently the network folks know what the problem is
and are in the process of taking care of the problem -- thankfully! This
backbone has been very good to Lomag over the years. I can't recall the
last time something major such as this occured.

It seems as if something major occured in the New York metro area though
affecting all local ISP's. Perhaps large fiber cuts. You can take a look at
the below URL where you can see the dip and spikes during this time frame
which affected all of North America...:
http://www.internettrafficreport.com/namerica.htm#graphs

All does appear to be well at this point, however some more hiccups might
occur as they full fix whatever the issue was. Sorry about this!

Mark

okay wow... I didn't reply to this thread earlier cause of the sheer idiocy displayed in like the first 2 posts... but now it has reached such an indeterminate level I feel I must inject some "smart" into the thread

1) any Broadband router you buy will have a built in DHCP Server
2) Routers cost about 40 dollars... not 9872349872347 like you tards keep saying
3) Most Switches cost as much if not more than a cheap 4 port router
4) so buy a router anyway
5) then you can share your broadband internet connection
6) you only need "LAN" to play other people .. on .. just that LAN...
7) to play on battle.net you just connect to battle.net it's simple

obviously Yiffy Kitten... any moron knows that.....

but playing on Battle.net has NOTHING to do with Lan....

and Bass seriously... if you are gonna spend 20 bucks on some 4 port BS piece of crap switch.... just spend 50 for a decent swtich with a router built in

yeah that would work for anyone who is not behind a firewall or router...

otherwise they would have to simply forward that port....

okay I think we are missing the point of the thread though

to play on battle.net you just need an internet connection

to play like in a house, THEN you need to setup a LAN....

which yeah... requires nothing more than a star topology networking device, hub, switch, etc....

ethernet cards and cables

and assigning ip's to the machines
