Hey all, my name is Lunar Depths, or Kara (pronounced CAR- uh, that's right) if you'd like. Raistlin decided to invite me on in here, so...here I am! I'm 18 andn attending Baylor University right now, so my main time occupancy is homework, that glorious torture device. When I do manage to get some free time together, though, I rp, write, read, play video games....or I'm on the road. Anyway, I better jet to my first class so I'll post more a little later! Take it easy.

Hmm...This thread is extremely interesting I have to say. Of all the comments made, sadly enough, only a few people actually back up their opinions intelligently. For all of you who simply say, "I'm voting Kerry because I hate Bush!".....well.....I'm sorry but that idiotic type of statement speaks for itself. Personally, I don't want to hear any whining and crying about how much you hate him if you have absolutely no fact or substance to your argument. The same goes for "I'm voting Bush because I hate Kerry." Please, we have brains and it's high time America started to use them.

As for oil....Aha it's amusing how many people are still convinced that we went to Iraq for oil. Did any of you know that the majority of our oil actually does not come from OPEC? I get not. Here's a nifty little thing to look at, but since many won't delve into it, I'll give the basic facts for you. http://www.eia.doe.gov/neic/rankings/crudebycountry.htm Basically, what this says is that our top five oil sources are in the following order: 1) Saudi Arabia 2)Mexico 3) Canada 4)Venezuela 5) Nigeria, etc etc etc. To skip over all the rest, here are the plain facts. In thousands of barrels a day, we receive 5,058 from non OPEC sources. How much comes from the Persian Gulf? 2,213. I think that speaks for itself. On another side of this issue though...if we are in Iraq, and they do happen to be an oil producing company, why not embark on trade agreements with them? I see absolutely nothing wrong with that.

Okay let's see, where else to go. I do want to make one comment about Apple's post on protesting. Thank God someone agrees with me, that's what I have to say. I am from Colorado Springs, and I lived on the Air Force Academy. When our troops from Ft. Carson came home from Iraq, imagine what was waiting for them at the gates when they entered? That's right, protestors. Not only are our soldiers parted from their family for months at a time, placed in an area of the world that no one would willingly choose to go to, and risking their lives...but upon their home coming, American citizens greet them with signs screaming "Murderer" etc etc. I don't know about you, but I find that absolutely pathetic. Not only does it have no bearing over our stay in Iraq, it's absolutely disrespectful to our troops. If you want to protest, do it in a timely place and manner, not at the gates of a base when our tired soldiers are finally coming home.

Anyway, this is getting a lot longer than I intended, so I'll just state my piece and move along. I will most assuredly be voting for Bush this fall. He may not be the most eloquent speaker, but he's the most honest president we've had in a while, at least in my opinion. I know there are all kinds of scandals going around, but with today's media, I don't trust anyone. From what I know, Bush has attempted to, or succeeded in, every goal he has stated. Kerry, on the other hand, changes his mind on issues quicker than a dog on steak. Personally, I want a president who will stand by his beliefs no matter what critisism he receives, and will make a firm stance. I do not want someone in that office that changes their mind with the wind, looking to please whoever he deems worthy at the time. Kerry is a puppet, a flip-flop. Who's pulling the strings? Hopefully we won't have to find out.

Aha that was a valiant effort on the name, I must say! But it is car-uh, I just emphasized the car because people tend to call me care-uh....and I hate that. But thank you for the welcome! =D It is greatly appreciated.

I'm sorry, perhaps I'm mistaken, but I do believe I addressed that very issue of people voting for Bush because they hate Kerry, did I not? My views on that go both ways.

If I had seen evidence of Kerry going out and receiving intelligent information, and thusly changing his mind, I would concede your point, Kaiser. From what I've gathered, though, he simply sways with the tide, voting for something one time and then against it the next, riding on the wave of whatever will get him the most votes. If you have an example to prove otherwise, I'd be more than happy to look at it and reconsider my opinion.

And on the issue of dying (with a y, just for future reference), yes it's a tragic thing, and ~maybe~ the rate of death is up, but death is a fact of life. Right now the deaths are for a cause, they are for a purpose. What purpose did the poor souls dumped into mass graves serve? None but for the pleasure of killing. I find it interesting that people assume that Iraq is worse off than it was before when they are slowly being given rights they never had the opportunity to experience. How about free press? Freedom to speak? Sure, there are a minority of individuals who are fighting back out of fear and anger, but what about the majority? Don't let the mass media taint the larger picture. How could days of toture and imprisonment for no reason possibly be better than what's going on now? Please give any examples that you might have.

On the matter of the U.N. ....Oh man, that's a fun one. This is my own opinion, granted, and none of you have to agree with it, but here it is. The U.N. is a waste of time and money, and is basically worthless. It is nothing but a bunch of old men with no idea how to help the world who sit around and argue, or lose billions of dollars from the "Oil for Food" program, or allow things like the Rwanda genocides to occur. When the U.N. can prove their worth to me, maybe I'll reconsider. As for right now, I just view it as a corrupt organization with too much regard from the world.

Respecting troups....this issue is a difficult one, I'll admit, especially when troops may be doing things the public does not approve of. For example, Vietnam. Something I think many people look over is that the military does not choose where they go or what they do. To serve in the military is a job and a lifestyle, and soldiers are required to do their duty with no questions asked. I think our soldiers should be respected no matter what, simply because they are willing to put their lives on the line at any time, for any reason. Does that not deserve our upmost respect? I'd like to think so.

Ziffski, I'm not entirely sure what exactly that first comment is supposed to mean, but I'm hoping you're not trying to silence me simply because I have a different view point on things. I really don't care what the "majority" of the people on this board are, we all have the right to express our views in a polite, respectful manner. Even though Kaiser and I may have rather large disagreements, the point of a civilized world is to be able to discuss them and broaden our own, and each others' minds.

Speaking of which, thank you for the correction Kaiser, I will remember the double "o". Long day...you know how it goes. I can understand your views on killing for a living, because I don't think anyone really enjoys that. The sad thing is our world requires that because we've made it unstable with years and years of warfare. It's become a necessity, so I suppose that's all I meant by what I said. And I apologize if I misunderstood your statement of the world court. With the UN in such close context, I assumed you were speaking of them jointly, if that makes any sense.

I think you took my comment on death far too cynically. The only thing I meant is that sometimes sacrifices must be made. There is not one civilization in this world that I'm aware of that achieved their place without some sort of violence. And while we may be trading one sort of violence in for another, I do believe there is such a thing as the lesser of two evils. Or the lesser of two weevils...whichever you prefer.

And another thing Ziffski, about the Rwanda genocides, I know that America didn't step in either, that's another major flaw I see in our country and one large thing about Clinton I detested. I meant in no way that somehow America managed to be the "hero" or something like that.

On the UN, I can concede the point of the idea being a good one. Of course diplomacy is the right answer, the only problem is it's not working correctly. Maybe with a little bit of reconstruction, I don't know, something I'm sure someone will think up someday, things will improve. As for now, I find it to be ineffective.

I think we shall have to agree to disagree on Kerry for the time being. I know people change their minds, heck I do it all the time. I am more than willing to listen to another side as long as there are cold hard facts to back it up, and if I'm proven wrong, I'll admit it. I just don't see Kerry doing that, it seems to be more of a popularity contest. While politics may require that for success, I'd rather not worry about my president changing ideals in the middle of the term. I vote for who I want for a reason, not for them to turn into a different person once elected.

And just on a side note...I really hope no one is taking these comments offensively. If I disagree with your views and I use the term "you", I do not mean to attack you as an individual. It's just the easiest way to express things by saying "you think" etc etc. I have no qualm with anyone on this board, or their views, and I would hope the respect is mutual. I just wanted to remind everyone...this is all in the spirit of good fun and intellectual exploration.

Yes, I am Raistlin's girlfriend and obviously he must have been talking about me due to Elmo's comment. I love the name btw, Elmo was always my favorite on Sesame Street. If you ever wanna talk or something, you're more than welcome. I have tons of messengers, so don't hesitate to ask! =D

Good deal on the name pronunciation...saying it right always makes my day! =D

And oh, Mileena! I meant to ask you earlier, what kind of rping do you do? Just curious about it.

drjayphd, just curious, but exactly how closely did you read my posts? Obviously not very, because you've somehow construed my words into something I absolutely did not say. I stated a couple of times that I would be fine with him changing his mind if it was for a good reason, what I ~don't~ like is someone who changes simply to change. ~That's~ what I said.

As for the protestors, I was extremely specific in my point, and I only talked about the people who were at the gate. I'm not too sure what your point is with the PETA comment...but I assure you, you misunderstood that as well.

And your conspiracy theory is interesting, even if unfounded. There seem to be a lot of those theories circulating around.

And on the issue of putting Saddam in power, yeah mistakes happen. America has made a lot of mistakes, and ones that have caused a lot of problems. No one in here denies that. The thing I don't understand, though, is that why everyone blames a single president. The current situation in Iraq belongs to not one, but many presidents, whether by neglect or poor decisions. I also think it's a little unfair to gang up on the military man simply because you believe in "peace love and harmony". That's easy to say when you have the rights he and people like him provide for you. Enjoy it, my friends, and then think twice before harping on his choice of service.

That's an interesting idea, Arwon, but then again, you have to look at the status of those countries. The higher up a country is on the world scale, the more in need they are of a formal army. Smaller countries, like Costa Rica, can rely on their allies to back them up if something were to happen. I doubt any of the surrounding countries would attack if they knew an ally would be right there to defend them. Especially one more powerful. Or perhaps even the UN would make a move if they decide to do something....but we wont go there again.

The idea of a smaller, better trained military is a slightly good idea, and I will agree with you to a certain extent. I find our military to be just a little strung out. Our bases are all over the world and I imagine our men and women are getting a little tired of it. Bringing them a bit closer to home might help some with that issue, but I don't think we can survive as a nation without a larger army. Afterall, with the amount of enemies we have, how can we just let go like that? I wonder how long we would last without some sort of challenge if we dropped our military, and then how effective would a militia truly be?

As for the war being economic, of course it's economic. Everything is economic if you look at it close enough. There are what, three pillars on which everything is based on: economy, politics, and the populace. If you were to take any event in the history of the world, I guarantee each one of those aspects would be present. The issue at hand, I think, is not whether it's a part of it, but rather how large a part it plays.

Another thing I want to mention briefly...the men and women who sign up for the military don't sign up to be chess pieces for a hierarchy. They sign up because they believe in the cause the military presents. But alright, I'll go with you on this path of them being pawns for those more profitable than we. Yes, the military does protect our interests. That's another thing the military is supposed to do. By protecting those, they protect our way of life. We could not possibly live the way we life if they did not secure our trade routes, oil lines, etc etc. Part of protecting our right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness is protecting our right to be prosperous. We no longer live in a time when the world powers try to take over another country, at least not for the moment anyway, so our goals must change. As our direct rights are not being violated, they protect what needs protecting: our countries resources. And beyond that, even if it goes badly or is misinterpreted, America tries to aid in the protection of those smaller than us. Even if you don't agree with the way it happens, or who it happens to....there are a few times when America's heart is in the right place.

Just a quick comment on this matter, in reference to Earth's spin and the rotation of the Moon. Here's a site from NASA with various questions answered, you have to scroll to find the topic but at least it's some info. The Earth's spin is in fact slowing down at milliseconds per century, due to the shift in water from ice melting and whatnot. At least, that's the theory I've heard. And because of this slowing of Earth's rotation, the gravitational field is not as strong, so the Moon is growing in distance. According to this site, someday it will be locked in place with us which will be very very bad. Who knows.

http://helios.gsfc.nasa.gov/qa_earth.html

And just a question, has anyone thought of combining the theories to work together? Assuming the Big Bang is true, who's to say there isn't a conductor? Just a thought.

I just want to voice my own opinion, as a Christian, that I believe both theories could be quite easily combined. Obviously evolution is a fact, it's visible everywhere around us. Interspecies evolution...well let's not discuss that. I don't think anyone will ever agree on that. As for the Big Bang theory, etc etc...as I stated before, there could be a conductor. I am more than willing to look at scientific fact and evidence, as long as it's feasible, and I think the respect should be mutual. After all, not too long ago science "proved" the Earth was flat.

You know...no offense, but it's Christians like you who give the rest of us a bad name. And for the nonbelievers in here, excuse me for getting religious, but I suppose it's the only way to get through to this kid.

Of course evolution and Christianity can mix, science was created by God. You cannot disprove science and evolution, it's happening as we speak and has been for the past hundreds of years. Hell, even humans are evolving, or don't you watch the Discovery Channel? No, I'm not going to download your zip file from God only knows where, because I know exactly what type of thing I'll be watching. It will be an extremist point of view who does nothing but damn the very things that build our world. The world ~is~ evolving whether you like it or not. Get over it.

In case you didn't know, there is a trend in Christianity now. It's called open-mindedness. Look it up. Just because people believe differently than we do doesn't make them bad. In fact, we should take every opportunity to learn about their thoughts because who knows, it just might be a good point or something worth learning. I attend a Baptist university, even though I am thankfully not Baptist, and we had a discussion lecture about this very subject. It is our job as Christian scholars to learn about all aspects of life, and how they connect to God and religion. Theology cannot be separated from science and math. There is no definition between the two. Can't you see God was a mathematician?

Anyway...I'll climb off my soapbox now before I'm either killed by religious extremists or the atheists.

Thank you for that Legion. I know many people might not agree with my beliefs, just as I don't believe in all of theirs, but I do believe very firmly that the only way to live peacably in this world is to have the intelligence to listen to them all. Afterall, they say intelligence is what seperates us from the animals, and I certainly hope to keep it that way =/

I just find it annoying and sad that people like that little boy over there taint the image of my religion. But eh, enough bashing. People believe different things, and all I vote for is the right for us all to express them for a good conversation and exploration. For isn't that what wisdom truly is?

Hmm, seems I missed a lot of fun after I went to bed last night! I am, however, very very pleased to see another Christian who understands that theolgy and science can mix. Bravo to you!

As for the Earth being 6000 years old, you better have the damn verse that says "GOD CREATED EARTH 6000 YEARS AGO" or *buzzer sound* sorry, please try again. You can't argue with science, so please stop trying.

And Acid Man...yes I know we creationists believe in God, and that he greated the heavens and the Earth...but while we can't prove God ~does~ exist, you can't prove he doesn't. Until then, I guess we all have to let bygones be bygones. You can't prove it either way, so I say we relish in science and enjoy what we find out.

I suppose that depends on what version of "burden of proof" you believe. Innocent until proven guilty, or guilty until proven innocent. But I can understand your stance, it's a lot safer to not believe in God, so meh, we all make our choices. Personally, I don't think there will ever be proof one way or another, at least not until the end days when two dead men will come back to life. We'll see I guess, if that even happens in our lifetime, but once again I go back to religion! Anyway, I just wanted to say thanks for being intelligent about it =D I dislike people who are like "You're different, you suck" so thanks for not being a moron. Have an awesome day!

I'm going to have to agree with Raistlin on the diploma issue. Grey, if you work hard and succeed throughout high school, as it's obvious you're doing, then don't even worry about them. The most they will ever achieve is a high school diploma that will let them do the jobs that none of us want to do. The program isn't very good, granted, but we do need people on the lower end of the spectrum. *shrugs* Harsh, but true.

Now...on the issue of religion in school. This is, no doubt, an extremely touchy issue. I am a bit confused though, about what types of policies you're referring to that Bush is trying to put into place. If you could give a place to get info, or some examples, I'd greatly appreciate it. As fo rmy opinion on the matter...I can understand where people on the opposite side come from. No one should be forced to pray in school. I do think, though, that people should have the ~right~ to pray in schools. As of now, in the majority of schools across the nation, no one is allowed to even mention God or religion. In fact, some schools aren't even allowed to have Christmas break because it has the word Christ in it. Instead, it's called Winter break. Personally, if no one is making people pray, they shouldn't be able to stop us either.

On gay marraige...well...my opinion is not exactly well liked. I see both sides of the argument. I understand that most of the controversy with gay marriage is the issue of marriage rights, ie insurance, hospital visitation, etc etc. In my opinion, it's easy to appease both sides. Do not force churches to provide a place for gay marriage, leave that up to them. Afterall, seperation of church and state. And really...I disagree with calling it marriage. To me, it's a violation of the sacred bond. Instead, I think they should just be allowed to have civil unions, or something along those lines. I've forgotten the exact term. In otherwords, they receive all the benefits of the marriage (insurance, taxes, etc etc) but it's technically not a marriage. Like a common law marriage even. I see that as solving the issue with both sides happy *shrugs*

And just to appease your fears...an amendment takes a 2/3 vote I believe, if not 3/4, so I wouldn't worry about it happening. I don't think that many people are so strongly against gay marriage.

If you're not too worried about price, Colgate University has an excellent English program, and they are ~very~ generous in financial aid. It's a small school, beautiful campus, and I think the dorms are nice too. If you apply, it's guaranteed the president of the university will write you a personal note on your letter. He'll even call sometimes, it's amazing.

A very very good friend of mine just transfered up to Hamilton, which is another very good school. Fairly small, again, but excellent quality. I think they're both private though, so I guess it depends on what kind of school you're looking for. Good luck in the search though, and one word of advice, apply for every single scholarship you can get your hands on!
