William: "Well, if it isn't Kyle. Well, come to watch the fight too?"

William gobbled up the rest of his popcorn, a few kernels though...

He then pulled out of his sack a jawbreaker and was about to put it in his mouth. He stopped and pulled it away for a second.

William: "Now, I am not too sure what is going on with Seph or anything... but here is what I have to say

"There is no such thing as absolute power, as the old saying goes 'Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutley'. This means, to me, is that no matter what opponent you face and what move they use, there is always a way to counter. No matter who you are. We all have weaknesses. If you say you don't, your weakness is arogance. So... you probably don't care anyway..."

He shoved the jawbreaker in his mouth, awaiting for the battle to go under way.

William: "Heh, a summon? Good, but not good enough."

He didn't worry about a summon at all for some reason. He didn't feel threatened... but why?

Zraku's attack would have hurt William, but William held his wrists up with the blades spinning. The blades started absorbing the attack! The entire attack was completly useless, as it layed within the confines of the blades, which slightly phased a white color.

Zraku did nothing to William. Absolutley nothing. It failed... except it triggered an attack from William.

William spread his arms in the air. The blades started spinning faster and faster until they both started hovering above the arena. They stopped spinning immediatly and then they both shot a gigantic beam into the sky. The beam was so big, that it could engulf the entire arena.

...but that was it. William did no attack this turn... what was that?

Nevertheless, William still had his armor on, awaiting for an attack to be pulled against him. He was not feeling afraid... just calm and cool.

William: "Better try something better next time."

Well, Fu, no matter what, you created Lunar Magic, and without that better hacks would not be made...

...well, not as easily. But if you created an ultra-powerful editor with very little limitations, that is a feat in itself.

So yeah, DWTLC wasn't the best thing ever. Lunar Magic, however, is one of the most flexible editors ever.

And, yes, Crystal Castle was, by far, one of the most poorly designed levels in SMW hacking... I didn't like it... then again, my opinion. I know someone is going to completly try to make me change my opinion... but I won't...

I found a... well, not really a glitch, but an error still. In SMA2: Super Mario World, look on the overworld right above the second castle. You can see Nintendo forgot to flip a tile. Found that on my own.

Halo 2: I fall into the ground sometimes at random. Mainly in Blood Gulch. Don't ask how or stuff, because I don't know how either, but I do know that it happens at the Banshee exit of the base... I just die and fall into the grey zone... it happened twice.

And in Pokemon Red, I made a Venusaur learn Metrenome... but for some reason I really don't know how I did it... it was funny too, as in Pokemon Stadium the move was written in pink...

Posted on 04-17-05 11:01 PM, in Kyouji's principles of good level design (and therefore good hacks) Link
Level design is key. Without level design, what does a hack have? Well, if there are no levels, you can't put in graphics or ASM hacks to be used for that matter. So without level design being good, odds are the level won't be good.

I totaly agree with the flow of a level. If you can still play the level over and over, it works. Plus, the only time you should make a frustrating level is when you have a special world, which can always have exceptions. However, if there is no special world, then these principles should be followed.

So... good work Kyouji.

For the atmosphere, though, you say you want a castle... well, castly. What about in my hack where the castles are going to be anthills? I guess I would have to make them... anthilly... or part-anthill part-castle...

...don't ask...

William: "Obviously you are in for a treat, yourself. Just wait and see."

William flew up in the air and looked down at Schwa and the Air Elemental. He shut off his blade jetpack. This caused him to start falling towards the ground. About a foot from the ground, William shot towards Schwa and the Air Elemental, blades on his wrist spinning. He ran into a control panel, which exploded on contact, but William still sped towards Schwa with no loss of speed or health for that matter. He pulled his right hand back and the blade on the end of his knuckle shined a dark brown.

William: "Shattered Blade!"

The blade spread apart. The blade, instead of being perfectly smooth, had a whole lot of ragged pieces all over it. This would clearly cause more damage, as it would scratch more than once. He sliced it at Schwa.

The sky, which was perfectly clear, started to darken with clouds. Something was happening in the sky.

-------

???: "Ummm... hi. Name's Katie. I felt like I had to come here for some reason... something about William that fuels my interest..."

Finally, Katie revealed her name after sitting in the arena for so long. She wasn't really paying much attention to Zraku... but she still acknowledged Zraku was there.

Hint: Give up.

I have tried myself to rip from Kirby SuperStar... somehow, it won't work. Even in a savestate, you can't get anything to look right except the sprites. I used BGMapper and it usually gives me the tiles of everything with all the palettes... but KSS... the palettes don't match. No palette works for the background or anything but some of the sprites.

Obviously, Kirby is so simple that it is complex. Easy game, yes, but hard to crack.

William pulled out a mini-stereo with a CD-Player. He popped in a custom made CD and pressed play. The song One Winged Angel, the final boss battle music from Final Fantasy VII, started playing. This is what he thought the battle was: a fight that will be well known. He put the player beside him.

He pulled out his Black Thorn sword and struck it in the ground in front of him. He peered at the battlers in the arena.

William: "Don't know who is bad or good, I just know one thing: Any attacks that stray I will bounce back into the arena... I think..."

He didn't know what feud was going on and why everyone hated Seph, considering the fact that Seph was a long time battler. He just knew that he could enjoy this fight.

Tyantas walked in the arena and sat in the top row. He wanted a birds-eye view of the battle, considering that the attacks might be massive. He just... well, instead of sat, he stood... he wasn't that tall anyway and he had no legs... just feet...

William: "Nice try, but the armor isn't hosted by some energy source. The sword is merely the souce of its power, and since the armor is the sword itself, well, then there really isn't anything that can stop it."

William pulled back from Schwa, with the beams pushing him back. After that "onslaught" he looked up in the sky.

"I hope this works..." He thought to himself.

William: "Protecga Level 99!"

The armor around William detached itself from him. The armor formed a cube around William, making an inpenetrable shield that requires a very powerful attack to break it.

Just after the cube formed, the clouds above the arena moved, leaving a huge circle in the sky. A beam started crashing down from space. William thought this was going to happen when he absorbed that attack and shot it up.

The beam headed towards the arena, which it crashed on the ground. The armor could only withstand so much, but it held. This beam became completly unelemental when William absorbed it, so no matter what, it would cause hefty damage unless you somehow dodge it. The only thing was that the attack would vary in the time it takes to actually be shot down. It could be that very same turn, leaving William completly unprotected, or it could be the tenth turn or whatever. The warning signs would be different each time too, so the attack was pretty unpredictable.

Once the beam became finished, William's armor would become the Black Thorn again, and William would be back to normal, but couldn't use his armor form for a while. What happened to Schwa, though...

In the stands, all you could see was a white light the entire arena length and miles up. You couldn't make anything out until the beam dessimated. Katie was kind of scared for a moment, but knew that William would probably be ok... she hoped... she also hoped for Schwa, too, as he was a good guy too...

Katie: "Is that attack considered honorable?"

OOC: Ultra powerful attack, yes? There are really big drawbacks though, as you can see, so this isn't like I didn't charge. In case you didn't see them:
William can't attack after casting that attack.
The attack will strike at a random moment, with the warning signs always different.
William is vurnerable to the attack as well.
He will lose his armor and not use it until the next battle.

So... it is a strong move, but the drawbacks make it not that good...

Ok, so I am working on a new hack, and I decided to change the status bar to be... well, better.

Here is a screen of the new hack... status bar and all.

I had to borrow tiles from the Mario text to make the item box, but then there is this:

I don't want scribble scrabble.

So, is there any way of possibly changing the tiles to display either nothing or something else? I just think that looks way too unprofessional...

Hmmm...

Kingdom Hearts 2 : I am ready for this game! I beat KH with the special ending, CoM the first time around, and am now starting another new game on KH... and KH 2 will have more worlds. I just can't wait.

Animal Crossing DS : Will be the best handheld sim ever. Plus the first game to use DS internet functions. Playing world-wide with this game... wow...

Legend of Zelda (GCN) : It really looks awesome.

Viewtiful Joe 3 : Yeah, there is going to be one soon... hopefully... there has to be.

Half-Life 2 (XBox) : PC sucks, so, yeah, this is going to rock!

Advance Wars DS : They better make it two player same system also, because that is the only way I play multi with friends at school... and I still beat them, even with them teamed up against me on a pre-deployed map. Funny...

More later on.

1. Super Mario Bros. 3
2. Sonic and Knuckles
9. Super Mario World
25. Dance Dance Revolution
11. Super Metroid
5. Final Fantasy VII
13. Kingdom Hearts
3. Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past

Reasons for votes:
1. Obviously this game is one of the best games ever made. While Halo 2 is fun, it just can't beat what Mario had.
2. F-Zero GX got boring for me. Now if they went in and added a track editor along with it, then probably would have more replay value, but nope... plus, Sonic and Knuckles was a really good game.
9. SMW was the first Mario game I beat 100% all levels.
25. The best non-controller game ever. While X2 was good... I guess... DDR just had a flair that you couldn't beat.
11. Never played Chrono Cross...
5. If it was a different Zelda game, then maybe this one would have been tougher. Unfortunatly, it was the first NES version. There isn't anything wrong with that, but I find LA and LttP better... and plus, FFVII has the best boss in video game history... or I think so. You just can't beat Sephiroth... he was pure evil from the start.
13. Kingdom Hearts. I think that this game broke out of the cliche RPG style and went into its own way of explaining a story and had the best battle system in an RPG. Awesome music, cool graphics, EXCELLENT story, and the best group of evil baddies ever. They all are just pure darkness.
3. This is the second Zelda game I played (following LA, which I played first). I thought the game was really, really good. It first featured the Master Sword and the bosses are cool. I just couldn't get into RE4, like all RE games... I don't know why...

I would like to download this, seriously, but Angelfire files WILL NOT download on my computer. It will go to 10% and say it is done... with like 800 bytes only. The file corrupts, and I can't use it.

If you could possibly, please try a different place. Even if it is Freewebs, I don't care, but no Angelfire. That always gives me trouble.

But from hearing what you did, I can't believe you until I hear it. But knowing you, you did do it good... maybe...

Good question. I would go with the originality part. I think an ok new character would beat a very good rip. While I am not saying rips are bad, handmade creations can turn out really well. Heck, I am doing an ant as a character for my hack!

I detest Mario colorization unless it was like... I don't know, something happened to Mario... so I stick with the Shy-Guy thing, since that might turn out good... as long as the levels change...

DUDE. With some clever hacking, this could be used to restrict access to the last world until you've beaten 4 specific bosses. AWESOME.

That reminds me...does anyone remember what values to change so the yellow and green ! blocks don't give you items?

Couldn't you just make the yellow and green blocks act like they are the red or blue ones? Oh, wait... ummm... nevermind... that wouldn't work... but wasn't similar info posted earlier about what sprite was contained in each of the extended objects? I am sure it would be around where that is...

But with that info, I could see a non-linear overworld being made easily with this. I would love to see this in action.

Let me post mikeyk's sprite data... I have it all here... I know he has it somewhere else, but whatever...

I blame the following on my older "more mature" brother.

A few years ago, before the Gamecube and new systems, we still played our SNES. We had recently gotten a Playstation, so we didn't play the SNES that much... well, at least my brother didn't. I still played Pokemon on the Super Game Boy.

One day, my cousin got a new SNES, one of the brand new designs (the one that was more rounded). He didn't have any games for it, so we decided to lend him some games for a while. Unfortunatly, my brother didn't take too kindly to this. He threw a fit. He didn't want to lend any games to him and he said it...

"Let's just give him the games then. Its not like we play them anymore."

Sure, let him say that, the only game he had was Mortal Kombat 3 and he didn't give that up for the M rating. My games included the following:

Super Mario World
Megaman X
DKC
LoZ: Link to the Past
Raiden Trad
Tetris Attack (I ALMOST KILLED HIM BECAUSE OF THIS GAME ALONE!)
Starfox
Super Ghouls n' Ghosts

There were a whole bunch more that I can't possibly remember, all which I lost for no profit whatsoever. Not even a penny. The only games left were Super GameBoy and Super Mario All Stars (which we found in the closet the next day, yet thrown in there by my brother). All because my brother has an attitude.

The only game I actually got back was Zelda and that was a few months ago. I just need a new controller and I would go back to playing the SNES again.

Oh, and in Link's Awakening, somehow one of my saved games got corrupted and made all the graphics disappear minus sprites. I didn't know how to fix it either... unitl I remembered to delete EVERY SAVE FILE! That kind of sucked... as one data was 100% completed...

Posted on 04-26-05 09:23 AM, in Why never to let someone you have never seen progress from finish a hack for you [Crappy SS] Link
Lespna1 has screwed up my hack for sure.

Now, a very, very long while ago (over a year) I cancelled Mario's Fun Levels, a hack with just simple level edits. That was my first edit and the reason for cancellation was due to the fact I learned more advanced features in LM and I wanted a new feel in the hack. So Lespna1 asked if he could continue it on for me. I said sure.

Biggest mistake I ever made.

Look at those screenshots and tell me that they are good.

Here is what I have to say:

I, cpubasic13, declare that Mario's Fun Levels has been discontinued by me and will no longer feature updates from the original author. Any henceforth known "updates" are no longer supported by cpubasic13 and any reference from help by cpubasic13 is false, as I no longer have anything to do with this hack.

I know that sometime soon Lespna1 was going to make another demo of this and post it here, stating that I made this with him. I don't want my reputation to be ruined by this... this... what is it?

So a warning: You don't know someone's skill, don't let them take over a hack for you.

Posted on 04-30-05 09:11 PM, in Custom Block Problems [ASM] Link
So recently I have been trying to make a custom block or two so I can at least put some of my ASM knowledge to work in some way...

However, when making a block just make a simple sound, the rom freezes. Here is just a simple code that I use.

A9 xx 8D yy yy 60 (I don't remember what the values are (on a different computer) so xx is the sound and yy yy is the RAM offset for loading up the sound)

Now, I save it into a .bin file, change the necessary things in Blocktool to add the block in it, and then saved the block into a SMW rom.

I test, and... it freezes. I don't understand why, as I also test another block that has a very similar routine work like that.

So here is the question: How am I supposed to properly insert a custom block without any glitches? I just want to start out with a block that mmakes a coin sound. Any help?
