So yeah, I was at my local Electronics Boutique yesterday buying my little sister's birthday gift (it's today), when I notice this rather striking individual at the front counter of the store, talking loudly about a Smash Brothers tournament he's going to be holding at the mall in my area. The strange thing about him, however, was his attire. Bright red jumpsuit, stripes on the back and sleeves. Etched across the back was the word "Nintendo" in white. His pants had a Super Mushroom on the hips and another stripe running down the sides. I couldn't help but imagine the strange Nintendo Power Players shows that used to contain video gaming tips back when games were just coming out and everyone wanted to milk it. This man's outfit brought me back to days when I cursed the existence of Wallmasters, pondered the meaning of the numbers that pitchers in Bases Loaded had beneath their names, and watched my friends beat up random enemies in River City Ransom. His nostalgic abilities were astounding, even as he bragged about his skills at current games. I was in awe, and at the same time thought it was a bit lame, truly a perfect combination of nerdiness and greatness. Forever will he be known to me as Nintendo Man. |

My schools, surprisingly, have both. But nobody's gotten their head stuck in a chair before, if they did it'd be all over the school just because of the ability of my school's denizens to spread information faster than a virus. This reminds me of that time someone grabbed a fire extinguisher and sprayed flame retardant chemicals all over one of our hallways. The entire school was closed down and everyone ordered to go home so that they could clean it out. I never retrieved my lunch from my History class.... |

Yep yep, tournaments pop up every once in awhile just because of how popular the game is. Whenever my friends and I have a LAN party, about a third of us just go out of the computer room for a few hours and play Melee. We're all really good players, so it's always fun, especially with the crazy rules that everyone comes up with.

Yeah I did have a problem with the whole one man army thing, but there wasn't much in the way of tactics in FFT anyway. As long as you were high leveled, you were indestructible. The only problematic missions for me were Ramza Vs. Weigraf (easily solved by my twinked out double sword/martial arts fighting style) and the execution platform, another one solved with a Calculator and a Mediator. And Agrias. When you say that tactics never expanded beyond choosing the most effective job class, well, that's what you did in FFT too. A Squire and a Mage at starting levels aren't evenly matched, the Mage would lose horribly. But a Squire and a Mage at max levels, with the Mage casting something like Death or Bolt4, and you've got yourself a fried Squire. You can't accuse FFTA of being un-tactical without applying the same situations to FFT. Now terrain differences were another story. I can understand a complaint about the lack of terrain variations in FFTA, and the removal of the Geomancer class as a result, but you seemed to be more concerned with the overpowering of the jobs rather than an actual tactical loss. I thought FFTA was amusing. I thought FFT was better. Any problems? (edited by Grey on 07-15-04 10:17 PM) |

Kornfan: Nope, RI. And I should have taken a picture. It would have lasted longer. Hopefully I'll see him again tomorrow when I go to register for the tournament he's hosting (I think it was sorta a promotional thing, the jumpsuit). |

Janus' shoulders slump, and he bows his head. Janus: "If that is what you wish... I shall oblige." Janus closes his eyes, takes out his recently gotten gaming artifacts, and concentrates. "Shadow, now I will show you the true extent of my abilities. As I recall and control varied abilities from gaming history, so do I have the ability to shape and mold them as I see fit. I can combine techniques, improve upon them, and basically modify them so they fit my current situation. So shall I do with these three devices right here." Janus continues to concentrate, as the two Materia begin to break apart. As they dissolve, he sets his bag on the ground, kneels, opens the bag, and lets them fall into it. He then takes the Deagle and places it in the bag. A bright flash suddenly emanates from the bag, and dies down as fast as it came, and Janus places his hand in the bag and withdraws a new weapon: A strange, silver and teal pistol comes out, crackling with electrical energy. Janus stands up. As he holds the gun, his hand shakes, and his voice stutters. He is clearly afraid to use this new weapon. "S-shadow, the average .50 caliber Deagle round weighs roughly 350 grams. F-fired at the normal m-muzzle velocity it's enough to pierce a kevlar vest. M-my ability to combine these items has given it a m-massive increase in velocity. The lightning energy has charged the gun so that it now f-fires its bullets at 186000 miles per second -- th--the speed of light--and electricity. However, this causes the bullet itself to become unstable, meaning it's useless--as a normal gun--and c-can no longer pierce armor. That's fine with me, because the increased muzzle velocity gives it a n-newfound degree of power that I'm s-sure you'll find interesting." Janus steels himself, stops stuttering, and takes aim with the weapon at where Shadow's voice came from. It didn't matter if he was on the mark, Shadow'd get the message soon enough. "Einstein's Theory of Relativity states that a large amount of energy can be wrought from a small object. His most famous formula, where energy equals an object's mass times the speed of light squared, proves that if traveling fast enough, any object can gain a massive amount of kinetic energy. This bullet will be traveling that fast. Do the math, Shadow. When it hits anything, it'll strike with an amount of energy comparable to over 2000 pounds of dynamite exploding! The sheer shockwave alone is enough to annihilate an office building! Can you handle that?" Aiming at a tree near Shadow's relative location, Janus screams in anxiety, "And the worst part of it all is this is just the TIP OF THE ICEBERG!" His eyes glowing that eerie blue color brightly, Janus fires! (edited by Grey on 07-16-04 12:32 AM) |

As the shot hit the tree Janus was aiming for, the force of the shot blew the tree open, scattering chunks of wood everywhere and blowing another shockwave outward from the tree, clearing every tree in a 100 foot radius. If he's in the air, Shadow should go flying, and will have to watch out for scattering trees. As for Janus, all that force requires an equal and opposite force. Janus is sent flying through the air due to the recoil from his weapon and is slammed into a tree, but still manages to control the gun enough to fire another explosive bullet, this time more towards Shadow's general direction. Janus: "I told you, Shadow. I told you I wanted to end this fight. You still have a chance to give up, this is just hurting both of us. I can't take much more, and I know you can't either. Do you surrender?" |

Ha, I love toys. Anything old or rare and hard to find, I want it. On occasion I'll even play with them. Most of the time I play with action figures with my little sister, but sometimes I'll get out my old Ninja Turtles and have crazy adventures. One time I did this little clone thing cause of all the variations of the Turtles that they released (Astronaut Raphael. WTF?)......... You know, I should just stop there. Ninja Turtles > all. Legos too. (edited by Grey on 07-17-04 11:42 PM) |

From the mud and dust, a figure can be seen far off in the distance. As he approaches, it is apparent he is holding a strange duffel bag, blueish in color and very heavy, though its weight causes no encumberance on its bearer. The figure, a young man in a baseball cap, slowly walks upon the deserted land, loose and lazy in his movements. He spots the troll, walks up to him, and smiles kindly. Janus: "Ah, you are a troll, are you not? I've come looking for you, and wish to ask of one of the talents of the trolls." He continues to stand, hoping to ask a simple question without any serious conflict. "They say that a troll can only be defeated by fire, and that any wounds he sustains are regenerated quickly. This makes them unstoppable creatures in battle, unless of course the opponent has a flaming weapon. I wish to know what it is about trolls that gives them that ability, and would like to have it myself. I've deduced that it is some kind of magic, not natural regeneration, and I believe I am capable of such magic. Perhaps you can help me?" Janus stands before the Troll, hoping for a response. |

Janus does not move, but stops smiling at the Tawq's threat. Janus: "You appear to have judged me too soon. To count me among those whom you loathe would be far too hasty an action on your part. Indeed, I know much of the desecration you speak of. I am not human myself, yet I live among them, for I am under their control so long as their thirst for blood exists. Their world is one of hypocrisies that they cannot see, but I can. Where they see fun, I see suffering. Where they see construction, I see destruction. Where they see happiness, I see sadness. Humanity has always destroyed to gain its joys, and the annihilation of your species' lifestyle I am sure is a horrid by-product of their viral expansion. I came not only to ask you about your race's magic, but also to know the story of your downfall. Human nature has always interested me, and I feel perhaps to know the lore of those who have suffered because of it will give me a better understanding of why destruction is so constant in their ways. You hate, yet you are not unintelligent, so you must hate for a reason." Janus takes his bag off of his shoulders and opens a pouch, flipping a small switch within the pouch on the bag. A handle comes out, and the bag hardens into a hammerlike shape. Janus does not lift the hammer, only using it as support. He continues to speak. Janus: "But you have drawn a weapon on me nonetheless, so I am obliged to defend myself. If I must fight you to learn what I wish to know, then so be it. It will just be another meaningless battle for me to atone for. However, I have another warning. Though I have no intention to fight you, by making the first move you demonstrate an intent to kill me. If you attempt to do so, I too shall also use deadly force. Let us keep this civil; enough have died in each of our worlds." Janus stands before Tawq, waiting for his verdict. |

OOC: It's Janus. Pronounced either Ya-nuss or Jay-nuss. I'm not a girl. Instead of soft flesh, the shield collided with Janus' hammer, which moved almost as quickly as Tawq did. An easy parry. Janus: "You're not getting it! I'm not human! I only live among them, and I share your hatred, even if it is lessened slightly I still know how you feel. If you want to attack me out of vengeance you're merely attacking a shell of what you want to destroy!" Janus skids backwards. His eyes have changed to a slight blue hue, barely noticeable. Regaining his balance, Janus charges toward Tawq and delivers a smashing overhead strike. "What have I done to you?" |

I have no problems with the EB battle system, I'd have liked animations all the same, but sometimes imagining the funky attacks that the enemies have is more fun anyway. Example: *The Annoying Reveler is reeling* If you imagine that, it's probably a good bit funnier than what a 16 bit game would have looked like. |

OOC: Heh, it's alright. And it means either out of character or out of challenge, I've always thought of it as the first. Janus: "Inspiring words from an inspiring foe." With surprising agility, Janus flips over Tawq's head, rolls several feet behind him, using the mud to slide along the ground to a safe distance away, and throws the hammer in a spinning arc at Tawq. "If I am ignorant, inform me." |

Noting the brilliant luck of Tawq's deflection, Janus rolls out of the way of Tawq's mad dash, grabbing his hammer in the process and extending it into Tawq's path, hoping to trip him with the handle.

Immediately Janus backs off, knowing that physically he's much weaker than Tawq. Janus: "You're stronger than me, and almost as fast, too. But how long can you keep this up?" Immediately Janus leaps high into the air and hangs from his hammer. "This might not be too effective because of all of this mud, but it'll certainly make a mess. EARTHQUAKE!" Janus begins spinning himself around in the air, building up momentum. After several seconds, he lets his hammer fly, plummeting toward the ground with enough speed to cause a shockwave. As the hammer hits the ground, a massive spray of mud kicks up, showering the area in dirt and sending a rippling wave of earth around. When Janus lands, he finds himself knee deep in mud. "Better than I thought, now what happened to the other guy?" |

His legs buried in mud, and his hammer nowhere to be found, Janus dives into the dirt in a feeble attempt to dig himself out. Instead, though he narrowly avoids the arrows, Janus finds himself further locked into the grimy depths. 'Like quicksand', he thinks. 'I need to find my hammer, then I can get out.' Janus: "Recall!" Expecting his hammer to fly toward him, Janus is rewarded with the sight of a slight bump from within the earth; the hammer is lodged inside, along with the rest of Janus' arsenal (remember, it's all in the bag). Janus is both scared and dismayed. 'I can't even sidestep like this! I'm totally stuck, there's gotta be something I can do. Wait.....' Janus looks at Tawq, then at Tawq's bow, then back at Tawq. ".......Would it work....?" |
