I've been using Ubuntu for a few days now, and I've made the decision to re-rip all my CDs. The bundled package for ripping is "CD Juicer", but for some obscure reason it will only rip to OGG for digital music encoding (not a massive help). |
I went past the CD Juicer website and it seems that the latest one does support MP3, but I'm not sure I can select a bitrate (again, this does not make it a useful program). Anyway, I downloaded it and followed the instructions. cd to directory - fine type ./configure - gave me "configure: error: no acceptable C compiler found in $PATH " >=( So, what do I do now? Has anyone got any recommendations for better ripping programs while I'm here?

You cannot overstate MP3's advantage in it's support. The quality of the compression really becomes insignificant when it comes to which devices and programs support formats. I mean, if we're talking compression alone, ATRAC is the best, but does anyone use it? No. I wanted to rip to MP3 because that would mean that I can use the same format of music on my Sony Network Walkman and on my PCs. If it's any other format, Sony's Sonic Stage software converts them all to ATRAC3+ instead, which takes forever. |
Anyway, where should I go from here? It doesn't make much sense to me that Ubuntu would stifle users by not bundling C. I can't be expected to live with their limited software, yet how do I install even C itself without a compiler? ![]()

Yeah, I tried that and it was really simple. I tried to get file sharing done today, so I went through the package manager and installed Samba. It took me a while to figure out that I needed to create users on Ubuntu for logins for people on the network and add them to Samba though... It's not as simple (or as insecure, I guess) as Windows. |
I've managed to access my MP3 folder across the network from my dad's and my brother's PCs, but the network workgroup will not be displayed on my laptop for some reason. It might have something to do with Norton or Windows Firewall, I'm hoping. Next, I'm going to install codecs for MP3 support so I can rip and play MP3s. I've created the format profile, as listed in help, but it didn't mention anything about codecs. Oh well. I guess making Linux user-friendly really is a lie ![]() (restricted) |

Guilty or innocent of the charges brought against him, he's still guilty of being a reject who doesn' know how to spend his money, manage his assets or his career. He lost at life, big time |

I'm going to see Rammstein for the third time in July, that's the second time this year |
![]() ![]() My favorite album is very close between Sehnsucht and Mutter. My favorite song is close between Du Hast and Seemann. Herzeleid.net is also one of the best non-official band sites on the net today. I think calling Rammstein nu-metal is a little bit misguided. I wouldn't put them anywhere near the likes of Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park or Static X in terms of musical style -or- reputation. Rammstein are respected amoung hardcore metal fans and newbies alike, which is a remarkable achievement. They have the most awesome stage-show bar none. (restricted) |

I ran into problems when setting up my laptop for file sharing. It turned out to be Norton blocking out the network like a hermit because it was configured originally to only use the network for net access and not file sharing. If you have a software firewall, it might help to have a look at the settings before trying to set up a file/ printer sharing workgroup. |

It's doubtful that we'll be looking to full reconfigure the staff again for a long time. One of the objectives in this reshuffle is to arrive at a staff set that is flexible and can be maintained on a regular basis. |
The last major application was about three years ago, so I'd wait at least 'till 2008 ![]()

I've been here for almost three and a half years. |
-Got promoted to Local Mod in 2002 -Got promoted to Full Mod in 2004 -Got promoted to Administrator / Programmer in 2005 I've finished school, applied to uni and have now finished my second year of study of Software Engineering. I've found a company that I like working for while studying and intend to climb my way to a management position before I leave to find a software job. Before I came to Acmlm's, me, NSNick, Tarale and Uncle Elmo were staff members at the Final Fantasy VII Citadel. Now we're all staff members here. |
