If you talk to somebody at your school, they have to do something about it. They have something called Mandatory Reporting, (all schools here do) if they find out that you are being abused, they have to do something about it.

Of course, I'd still talk to the police. If your parents are beating you bruised and bloody, they're not the kind of people you should be around. They have no right to do that, and no reason (like grades) is acceptable when it comes to that behaviour. They're grown ups, they should know better too.

Speak to the police, or speak to somebody at your school.

And yeah, if you have a friend at school, speak to them and ask if it would be possible for you to stay there for a while, perhaps.

I watched a movie, worked on my job application and had a few quiet drinks. Pretty much like every other night, but with more beer/baileys'.

A quiet new years, just wasn't really in the mood for the partying this year.

Eh, on very first glance, I was curious (course, I'd just finished checking my email spam moments before). Thought about it, and came up with the right conclusion...

It's like the wet pussy joke Kitten Yiffer mentioned. (scary wet pussy... )

Generally I think New Years Resolutions are a bunch of shit. We *all* make them every fricken year, and within a week, we've all forgotten them again.

That said, my new years' resolution is the same shit I've been saying for weeks and weeks on end anyways. I'd like to lose a little weight. Hopefully it'll have some nice happy health benefits and I'll feel a whole lot better I'm off the medication that was messing with my weight...

Course, watch me forget all about it in less than a week.

Bleh, I thought that might happen. Oh well, unfortunately I can't think of a way to check if hotlinking is disabled on a server -- once you've already accessed it, it turns up fine.

My cat looked very pissed off. Although come to think of it, they all do....

Personally, I'd like to see Hardware/Software become more of a discussion (and not just help) forum... it doesn't explicitly say anywhere in the description that it *has* to be help stuff, it's just that that's what it always turns out to be.

Course, even if Hardware/Software became the place for these things, if a vulnerability is serious enough, or a virus serious enough, I will post it in here. Some things need to be bought to the attention of as many people as possible, not just the group of users that visit Hardware/Software.

But yeah, this and that Santy thread should prolly go into Hardware/Software?

Colleen -- with Safari, I keep forgetting I have it. I didn't like it, so I installed Firefox.

My other half likes Fireworks.... I enjoy them, but I am nowhere near as into them as he is. I like to watch them, but he likes to set them off. If he was a moron, I'd worry, but he knows very well what he is doing, so I'm not worried about him. Unlike some people, he doesn't do anything stupid and he doesn't take any risks.

He does like stuff that goes "bang". I don't mind, as long as I know there's going to be a bang... if I don't know there's gonna be a bang, I tend to jump when it takes me by surprise!

I know people who are less than sensible with fireworks, and it resulted in damage to the rear windshield of a car.... (by "damage" I mean, the person threw a maroon, and there *was* no more rear windshield after that). Expensive to fix up.

I happen to think you've got too high an opinion of private schools.

There is NOTHING anybody can do to stop your parents from going "too far" unless you contact the authorities.

Your parents have you in their house, in their custody. While it's not legal, it doesn't matter, they can effectively do whatever they like to you. If they've beaten you before, there is absolutely NOTHING stopping them from doing it again. And what's stopping them from going really too far one day? What if one day they beat you till you're seriously, permanently injured? Or dead?

What about your sisters? You say that they don't get beaten much now, but how do you know that's never going to change? You don't. You don't know if or when that's going to change.

I repeat: outside of telling the Police or some authorities, there is NOTHING that anybody can do for you.

That means you have to make a decision. You effectively have two options, no more:

Continue to have the crap beaten out of you by your parents. You'll feel like shit all the time, and you'll be living in fear of when the next beating's going to come, but you'll get to go to your private school.

-- OR --

Accept that the only way to free yourself from this is to take the plunge and call the police. You don't know what will happen till you do, but I can tell you this much -- they are the only people with the power to stop your parents from doing this to you and to your sisters.

Personally, if I were in your situation, I'd take the plunge and call the police. If not for your own sake, but for your sisters sake. Like I said, you don't know when the situation will get bad for them, too.

HyperHacker -- the LoadImage thing is exploitable, but I haven't heard of any exploits in the wild yet.

But yeah, the LoadImage thing worried me too.

As for removing IE -- you don't need to delete it (in fact, you'll break things if you do), but it's a good idea to perhaps HIDE it.

Simple enough question. Have you ever been carded when buying a game?

Some retailers are apparently asking for ID when people purchase certain games now, so I was just wondering.

If you were carded, what game were you buying?

Have any of you been prevented from buying a game due to somebody checking for ID?

Personally, I haven't been carded when buying games. Alcohol, yes, going to the casino, yes... videogames, no...

A lot of vulnerabilities are used now by corporations -- the most common corporate use of a vulnerability is to get spyware onto your machine so that corporations can target advertising to you.

A lot of viruses and trojans lately seem to be being developed with spammers' usage in mind -- they are frequently designed to take over your machine and turn it into a zombie that spammers can use to send their spam with. The spammers then hide behind your hacked computer... if anybody traces the spam back, they find YOU, not the spammer!

And all of this is done for -- you guessed it -- money.

They're not doing it cause it's "funny", they're doing it cause somebody's paying them to do it. And clearly, the spammers and corporations are paying well... this is becoming more widespread.

Only the script kiddies do shit like this for "sick kicks" and they're mostly harmless.

Don't effing crack Ad-Aware. Support the companies that keep your machine clean -- either pay for the pro version, or use the free version.

As for the viruses, I have to wonder what you were doing to get 30 of them. Patch your installation of Windows.

Well the free version is fine, and there is other free stuff out there like Spybot Search and Destroy. Try it out. There's also free antivirus programs out there like AVG and stuff. If you're really broke, rather than crack software, you should look at all the free software that's out there. Believe it or not, there is a lot of good free software out there that doesn't have spyware in it....

As for the pro version of AdAware not being better than the free one -- if it was better at scanning software, there'd be a few... issues. I wouldn't trust Lavasoft anymore, that's for sure!

Well, you're allowed to hate Firefox, that's your prerogative.

I like Firefox, and I don't like to use IE. That's my prerogative. In fact, I am happy to use Mozilla, Mozilla Firefox, Mozilla Camino, Opera or Safari before I use IE. I won't use Netscape at all though if I can help it.

The biggest advantage that ALL of the alternate browsers I mentioned have over IE is security. They don't have ActiveX in them, and they don't have vulnerabilities that lead into the very core of Windows. Spyware doesn't use the other browsers to hijack your PC.

Then there's things like tabbed browsing, which all of those browsers have. Extensions, which allows you to customise Firefox, etc, etc.

There are a lot of advantages that Firefox has over IE. But if you don't like it, well... like I said, that's your prerogative. Perhaps try another alternative browser if you didn't like Firefox? like Mozilla (vanilla mozilla, not firefox mozilla), or Opera?

You mean a Cactuar.

He is a monster. He serves no other purpose.

He appers in multiple FF games, and is usually difficult to find and/or beat. It is known for its 1000 needles attack.

Firefox doesn't have mouse gestures built in.... and the mouse gestures that Nick was using don't seem to want to install in the latest version. (Which is why he's using the older Firebird instead)

Opera has mouse gestures built in, but Firefox needs an extension.

And yeah, I was gonna say that spelling gestures right would prolly help...
