Not comparable to Franz Ferdinand at all, just saying that of the albums of this year I've heard, I like DEP's most. "Metalcore" (a very dorky sounding sub-genre name) is probably my favorite form of metal. The Dillinger Escape Plan, Botch, Between the Buried and Me, Yakuza, The Red Chord, early Cave In, Drowningman, Unearth... I love that stuff. Hopefully I'll be seeing BTBAM with Cave In and Converge this October (if work doesn't get in the way). |

I recently bought the Black Sabbath remastered box set. Yes, Sabbath is the shit.

Well, I've always thought Seth MacFarlane to be the creator. Is he? If he's no longer involved, that wouldn't make sense, 'cos I think he also does the voices for Peter and Stewie and several others.

So there's this band, from Denmark, known as Raunchy, and their second album, Confusion Bay, totally reminds me of Spineshank (an American nu-metal band with lots of electronics), only with much better musicianship and songwriting, and a really good vocalist that can both sing and scream very well (and he does a good amount of both, though Lars never screams like he does on Raunchy's first album, Velvet Noise, which is more brutal, so this is a very accessible sophomore release). Ah think y'alls folks should chyeck it out... Each song is good and with very catchy and melodic choruses. Shame that after recording this album, their vocalist left. Lars Vognstrup is one of the major reasons I dig Raunchy so much. He was a total pimp, and now they've replaced him with some pudgy guy. I bet his vocals stink... Haven't heard him yet, though. If you go to their website, you can download the video for "Watch Out". |

Isn't Grim Reaper like an Iron Maiden wannabe band? A wannabe band of crusty old men and a really fat, ridiculous looking frontman... I've only seen one video, but it was bad. Check it out? ;P Sigh is totally badass. I can't get over how good Scenario IV: Dread Dreams and Imaginary Sonicscape are. Totally fun, experimental albums. I own Scorn Defeat too, and it's badass, but I've only listened to it about twice, thus not really familiarizing myself with it. Much more straight-up black metal than their latter stuff. I have MP3s of Infidel Art but haven't listened to those too much either. |

I don't know if I'd compare COB to Iron Maiden. Sure, they're high-energy power metal, but there's nothing in Maiden like the keyboards in COB, and the vocals are so, so much different.

I meant to go to the Machine Head concert with guests Chimaira (boooo) and Trivium (yaaaay!). My van broke down on the way to the club, missed the show... Cryin' shame. I've only heard MH's newest, but it rocks, and I really dig Trivium. (Hell, just go to their website, go to the downloads section and nab the two tracks from Ember to Inferno. If you're not a metal fan though, well...stay away I suppose. The site describes the album as "melodic death metalcore." Kind of fitting.) Anyhoo... My first concert ever, May 2003...Meshuggah with Strapping Young Lad... Crazy, crazy show, lots of metal mayhem. Gave me giant wood. Excellent way to break my concert cherry. This is when I was diving more thoroughly into the depths of metal, so I was kind of new to this madness. Ears rang with delight for about 2 days. SYL's Canadian, so just before the show the speakers played that blame Canada song from the South Park movie. Totally rad... This October I'm REALLY looking forward to two different shows: The Dillinger Escape Plan (can't wait to hear the new material live and to see the band and their current vocalist in action), and Converge with Cave In and Between the Buried and Me (mostly going for BTBAM; love Cave In but not too familiar with Converge). They'll both be killer... I can sense it. And they're all ages shows! I've missed too many concerts lately due to them being 21+. Complete bullshit, yo. Been to some other cool concerts...nothing that really stands out though. Missed The Devin Townsend Band last year...as well as Nile...and this year, Skinny Puppy and tweaker didn't roll into Minneapolis, so that's sad I didn't get to see them. The upcoming Sleepytime Gorilla Museum show is 21+...so that sucks... Meh. |

Yeah, definitely. It helps to check an official source, you know? : Bleedthrough / Bleed Through / Bleed-through is supposed to be out in early 2005. For a while Rick Rubin was going to produce or co-produce it, but now it's all Trent Reznor apparently, maybe some help from his programmers. Whatever the case, the new album's going to rule, and it's got Dave Grohl on drums. Until it comes out, there are supposed to be two earlier releases: a 2-disc DVD set of Closure (FINALLY--AND WITH TONS OF NEW STUFF!!!), and a 2-disc 5.1 audio deluxe edition of The Greatest Album of All Ti---I mean, The Downward Spiral. Woo! (edited by Abnormal Freak on 08-29-04 09:49 PM) |

I hate most of the anime I've seen. (Some of my friends are anime nuts.) But when it's good, it's REAL good. By the way, I think there's an anime section. This thread will likely be moved there. |

So now apparently, according to Apple, Alexi Laiho isn't a talented lead guitarist. Funny. And COB's keyboardist isn't skilled and has no musical abilities either. Those two make the band. While COB doesn't write the greatest songs around, they're efficient and the two mentioned are definitely good at their instruments. |

Most power metal vocalists don't know how to sing. Falsetto? Please. I haaaaate constant metal falsetto. Bruce Dickinson really knows how to sing though, but his voice isn't artificial. Awesome vocalist right there.

You might retch at first. But then, you might retch after it's all over. Power metal is very high-energy stuff with high voices, and they're all wrapped in fantasy stuff, like...slaying dragons and such. The lyrics and vocals are usually crap. (edited by Abnormal Freak on 09-02-04 01:20 PM) |

My sister's got some Finntroll CDs... I forgot about that. She's also got Immortal and other black metal stuff... I should borrow them. I highly doubt Martyr and TYOOL are Christian bands. But then, I'm not all too familiar with them...I just like what I've heard. |

The kind of metal I like most is hardcore metal. The Dillinger Escape Plan, Between the Buried and Me, Yakuza, Botch, The Red Chord... Haven't delved too deeply into the style, but I really love what I've heard. I dig death metal and its variants too... Nile, Arsis, At the Gates, Death, Cryptopsy, Capharnaum...things like that. Also into some black metal, more so the experimental stuff like Sigh, Solefald, and ...and Oceans, but I also rock out to Emperor, Dissection, and yes, Cradle of Filth as well. Lately been getting into way more metal than ever before... I have quite a few CDs I haven't even listened to yet. Also love stuff such as Strapping Young Lad (aggressive Canuck metal), Devin Townsend (poppy Canuck metal), SikTh (metal + hardcore + nu-metal + progressive + jazz + craziness + Muppets), Raunchy (extremely talented Danish nu-metal), Mastodon (dirty south rock'n'metal?), Children of Bodom (power metal with death/black vocals?), and classics like Iron Maiden, Testament, Exodus, and so on. Could go on, but that's tiresome. But that's just metal. My favorite kind of music is industrial and related stuff, but most of that's all crap anyway. When it's done right though, it's incredible. Skinny Puppy, Nine Inch Nails, Chemlab, Prick, Einst (edited by Abnormal Freak on 09-03-04 02:30 AM) (edited by Abnormal Freak on 09-03-04 02:40 AM) |

Thief: The Dark Project/Thief Gold creeps me out. That's a game to play late at night, with the lights down, and with headphones on (the game is always best with headphones). Dark game...really dark. Awesome environments, scary supernatural stuff. Can't say much more...but look into it. It's a pretty old PC game, from 1998. But it's one of my top 10 favorite games. It's kind of like a first-person shooter, only it's medieval, you use stealth (hide in the shadows, make quiet treads across loud surfaces, extinguish torches with water arrows), you have a blackjack and a sword, and it's best if you don't kill any humans. If you get like 3 guys attacking you, you're screwed, 'cos there's no way you can face all of them at once. So instead, sneak past 'em or knock 'em out, pick up their bodies, and hide them places where others won't spot them! Oh yeah, and you gotta steal a lot of loot, from mansions to bone hoards. Fun! Definitely a game worth looking into if you're into stealthy first-person games and scary things...oh yeah, and great atmosphere and art. (GodDAMN, is it ever an arty game...) Games like System Shock 2 and Deus Ex were heavily based off this. The Gold version is perhaps better, as it's got some extra levels which are fun, as well as some additional secrets in levels that're in the original, and other things like that. And if you end up liking that, get Thief II: The Metal Age as well. There's also a new one, Thief: Deadly Shadows, which you can play on either PC or Xbox. Fun game, though definitely my least favorite of the 3. Didn't have much of the spooky stuff, which is disappointing...but still pretty scary at parts. Oh, and it's just after typing up this whole post that I went back to look at all the rest of the posts and saw someone already mentioned Thief...but oh well, I hope this post is informative and piques your interest. Thief: The Dark Project is way scarier than any Silent Hill or Resident Evil games (the latter of which 97% of the time relies on startling you, making you jump...the first game was way better when you were lead to think it was a supernatural thing, and not some dumb virus). So you're not a FPS gamer...but do look into Thief, like I was saying. I used to be a big FPS fan, but Thief totally changed my views on what to expect out of a first-person game. The object is not to kill, you get several mission objectives that you have to carry through with (like for example, breaking some chick's brother out of a smelly prison while you're there and finished with your other objectives, so that she might "pay you back" in some way--only available on the hardest setting, which is the only way to play the game since it gives you so much more fun stuff to do), the world's very interactive... Great stuff.

MC Hawking is a must. Rap where the vocals are done with the same voice program that Stephen Hawking uses. Hilarious material. |
