I played the first World. It's pretty good. A lot of surprises come up that I have to get around. How much of it is complete?

Perhaps instead of making a Red Bros. followed by a Blue, how about switching to Blue in-game?

Posted on 06-01-05 01:03 AM, in Regarding Pipes in SMB3 Link
In every pipe level, there is but one sprite, whose position differs for each enemy data offset. The y position of that sprite in the level seems to be of great import (though not the x position). A particular y position seems to signify where on the World Map Mario will emerge when he leaves the pipe level through either the left pipe or the right pipe (each y position has a different value for each), but it seems to follow no pattern. Because of this, I believe that stored somewhere in the ROM there is a table of pipe locations, a table, I think, many SMB3 hackers would like to have. Does anyone have information on this?

But there is a routine, right? What other addresses in the ROM did the routine read and/or what calculations did it perform? You don't happen to remember where the ASM might be located, do you?

I am actually finished, but I lost what I had written about world 8. I didn't find any glitches though, everything looked pretty nice.

About my time: Yes, I tend to be busy at this time of the year. Unlike most other people around here, I work at school and get good grades. However, I've been home from school due to illness these days, so I've been at the computer most of the time. I started working on my own hack again, not only because I have much time now, but also because I got inspired to work on it again after playing this hack.

When it comes to how good I am, I died quite a few times in world 8. Then again, I've owned the game for almost 15 years, so my skills and timing should be good enough. Another reason why I didn't visit the mushroom houses in world 6 is that the card game appears quite often. Also, I was so exited that I couldn't waste my time on them.

Oh well. I just think that if you're going to test a game, you should test as much stuff as you can think of. So were the mushroom house and hammer bro glitches fixed?

With SMB3, you've got to remember that a player can duck on that block for 5 seconds to go behind the background. When properly used, it adds a cool feature. If misused, or abused, it can be fustrating.

Right, I know about that. I don't think it would be that much of an issue if a player did that though, at least not on this map. Did you play the stage?

Updated the Link's Sex Change hack. I smoothed out the animations. Here are the screens from before:

Note to SePh: I have a new link for altpgirl, please update it at the front.

And here's the link:

This is version 1.1 btw.

Praises and constructive criticism are welcome.

DurfarC,

You know, if Geocities might be a problem, then try Freewebs.com. It's pretty reliable when it comes to bandwith. Now let me shut up and play your hack!

Are you talking about those things which in LTTP look like skulls in the middle of four orbiting red orbs and which bounce from wall to wall like the ball does in Pong? If so, then I agree with you. Those things are hard to watch and predict and often get in your way. Not only did they hurt your health, but they also drained your magic.

I like Peach (for some reason I seem to do well as her). I also like Roy and Marth, as I find that if your A-button attacks aren't working, switch to the B-button ones (which are just like the A-button ones, except they seem to follow a different timing).

Actually, Blue SMB3 looks sorta cool. The look is much more mellow than Red.

Posted on 06-03-05 02:13 AM, in Regarding Pointers in SMB3--Especially For You, Editor Makers Link
In editing SMB3, I have come to an interesting issue, those of pointers. The x and y positions and the "type" of pointer determine what exactly that pointer will "point" to (i.e. where and how Mario will enter the next sublevel of a stage). The x position of a pointer (whose upper nibble determines the y position for the next sublevel and whose lower nibble determines the manner in which Mario will enter that sublevel) seems particularly troublesome, because the x length of bonus areas tend to be smaller than the x position of the pointer itself, thus ensuring that pointers are usually out of range of the editing area in an SMB3 level editor. Because of this, hackers must tab their way to finding the pointers or expand the x length of the level to put the pointer in range. This makes pointer editing a bit of an odd job sometimes.

I recommend that level editors search for all 3-byte bank 7 objects when they load the level and list them. The editors will give a menu command "Edit Pointers." The user will be able to click on "Edit Pointers" and see a list of the pointers in the stage and be able to add new pointers to the list by converting an existing 3-byte object (for those editors which don't allow users to delete and add objects) or by creating a new one from scratch. It will then allow the user to edit the parameters of that pointer and to be able to come in again and again and edit them at will. I think this will simplify pointer editing. Perhaps someone like hukka (the maker of my favorite level editor SMB3 Workshop) can come in experiment with this, having both pointers on the level screen, but also having a list of them.

What do you guys think?

DurfarC,

It's not that bad , but I did have a problem with bandwidth on Geocities.

BTW, I like your hack. Sometimes, I get surprised by things I don't expect and die.

Also I was just thinking, has anyone ever finished a zelda 3 hack (other than sprite hacks)? I don't mean to sound like a downer. I'm sure no one ever starts out with the intention of quiting, but I would like a completed Z3 hack to play for a change ;-) But to this day I haven't found one :-( Maybe some of you should team up if you start to get discouraged again. It might take some of the load off to know you've got someone backing you up and helping you solve any problems you run into. I'm sure all the team could learn from each others experiences too. Finnally has anyone heard from GameMakr24? His "Quest for Calatia" hack looked to be one of the most promising given his track record with "Outlands".

Dark Prophecy and the Gates of Time also seem to have potential.
