| See, that's the thing. I don't think of myself as smarter than everybody else, or more knowledgeable, or anything. I don't think I'm cool and everyone else is just a drooling moron who only cares about the latest celebrity crime. I think that most people fail to give a shit. We have a fairly mixed population on this board, yet all the responses to this thread (all three of them) have also been from non-shit-givers. So if there are so many "good little sheep" where are they, huh? I know a lot of different people who probably fit the description of "good little sheep" (out in the "real world")... even the most "tv-trained" among them care way more about their own lives than the bullshit going on with famous people on the magic picture box. Now, I'm not talking about news here. No matter what your politics are a lot of that shit does affect you. I'm just talking about this hollywood shit. I'm an optimist. I think that most people are above this crap, and those who do care aren't really to blame. I don't think there are as many sheep as some people despair about, and I don't think I'm special for not caring about Tom Cruise's sex life. Am I wrong? | David Gonterman. Know who he is? If so, read on. If not, good for you (but if you're morbidly curious, check out an introduction, a good overview of the problem, and the rest in case you haven't had enough). I won't give you all the background. (See above for that.) But I wanted to give a second opinion. First of all, I disagree with pretty much everything "Davey-kins" has ever done. But I sympathize with him, as do the friendly folks running the shrine. Sure, I'll make fun of his every move given the opportunity. But where I differ is that I don't think I'm as far from Gonterman as I'd like to think, and I don't think most people are. Now, this is the controversial part. Sure, he puts himself in every one of his stories as the hero, and invariably has sex with a fawning woman (generally a robot or an animal, or both). Sure, he threatens people he doesn't like with "roboticization" or just puts them in a comic, kills them, and brags about winning the battle. Sure, he's drawn hundreds of comics with no tangible improvement in artistic ability (hell, I can draw better than he can). Sure, he demonstrates the worst varieties of racism and homophobia. But he was pretty much inevitable. Now seriously, think about it for a second. Are you really surprised Gonterman exists? Of course not. While he's an extreme example of them, he only demonstrates traits that can be found in the people you know and claim to love all over the internet. People make a big deal out of him, but all of the same can be seen on virtually any message board (this one included). The fact that all of it is combined into one person is an inevitable fluke with the population numbers we have going now. Really, the only things unusual about Gonterman are his proliferation and his persistence. Not long ago, I could easily have done the kinds of things Daveykins is infamous for. Of course, I don't share his prejudices, or his horrible writing style, or his spelling or grammar or terribly-drawn chicken-scratch artistic abilities. Also he's close to twice my age. Well, maybe I'm not that close to him. But all things considered, he's really not such a huge deviant. I guess what I'm trying to say is that while it's easy to poke fun at him- isn't there a little Davey-kins in all of us? God, what a horrible thought. I'm not an optimist anymore. If you're wondering, it looks like this.  If you're having trouble seeing it because it's so small, here you go. It took me about ten minutes to make. That might seem like a lot, but it took a lot of tweaking. It's a difficult concept to get across in 121 tiny pixels.. |

Well, naturally. The board doesn't need anything. It's a nice little package of php that can sit nicely on its own. Maybe the board shouldn't have more "things like that," but I don't care beyond making it, so I'll leave it up to the admins. Oh well, I'll find out tomorrow. Anyway, maybe you don't agree with the sentiment, or maybe you just don't like being flipped off by a gif. But I think it builds character. By the way, you know you can put like color and bold tags or whatever in your header and footer, right? Instead of putting them in every post? It's a neat trick. Don't think I'm ungrateful for the feedback. I gladly accept all types. |
