Here is a neat little tool I stumbled upon which generates 2D explosions suitable for amateur developers and artists:

Only problem is it will not run properly on my computer... I get a black window which disables the mouse while it's active. Are you getting the same issue?

Yes, I figured that out after a while. Takes some time getting something you want, usually the results can end up looking a bit too particle-esque.

There is a windows version of Tomb Raider with hardware acceleration support, I got some special edition along with an expansion pack a long ago. I bet there's a patch available for vanilla Tomb Raider, as is the case with most PC games during the Voodoo days.

Posted on 08-11-05 06:27 PM, in NES original game prices Link
Nintendo were real assholes with game prices up until the N64 era. Stores that weren't game-dedicated were contributing to this too, raising prices even more to feed on the children's unsuspecting parents. I know one guy that saw DKC3 for $150 in Toys 'R Us.

Makes me glad I only rented Nintendo games back then. I would never pay over $50 for a game, unless it was some sort of super duper special edition that I really want.

Virtua Racer cost a lot because it used some special chip to render realtime polygons at an acceptable framerate. This wasn't the case with Phantasy Star IV though, I think they just wanted to squeeze out more from the JRPG snobs who would pay astronomical amounts for just one stupid game. Other than that, I found Sega games generally cheaper than SNES games. I got the games I wanted, and didn't have to pay over $50 for them.

Try some 3D modeling:
www.sketchup.com

Easy to learn and fun to use, compared to all the other pro 3d modelers.

Edit: Er, looks like there has been a slight misunderstanding.

Ah, yes. Get the Fallout collection which has Fallout, Fallout 2 and Fallout Tactics. It's cheap as dirt and one of the best investments you'll ever make. Fallout 2 is hands down the best RPG ever, number 1 felt a bit too desolate for my tastes and I found the psuedo-wild west atmosphere in number 2 more appealing. Tactics is a solid game in its own right but can't compare to the originals. It takes away the role-playing elements which was the best part of the series.

It feels as though many people suddenly go vegetarian just to have some sense of moral superiority.

And before the discussion starts, it is very possible to maintain a healthy diet and have all the vitamins and whatnot needed as a vegetarian. It's just a helluva lot harder.

All Command & Conquer here. Gives me a lot of tactical freedom as opposed to Blizzard's games. The latter parts of the franchise are also very customizable and mod-friendly, there's heaps of mods and even total conversions available and coming up. The awesome music and funny FMV cutscenes are a nice bonus as well. There are no codes or cheats for any C&C but in Red Alert there's a secret B-movie campaign with giant ants, and in C&C1 there's another campaign with dinosaurs.

Other than that, I've spent a lot of time with the Dune games and Rise of Nations (Superb RTS blend of Age of Empires and Civilization).

I have both BG1 and 2 with their respective expansions, haven't gotten around to playing the first one yet though. BG2 was fun but I felt it lacked the sense of freedom found in Fallout, however the interaction between the party members make up for it and makes them feel so much more alive rather than just having them follow you and shut up. You can really tell they have their own lives and ambitions.
