It'd be nice to know what kind of story went along with the game, but I'm not about to learn japanese just to understand or translate a hack. It's probably not that important anyway, the story is like the least important part of a Mario adventure.

I've had success darkening the palettes in test hacks in the past. It's not too hard of an effect to achieve, once you get used to palette editting. The main problem I have with the palettes as they are now is that they are inconsistent. A good example of this is the Yoshi coins and the bushes.

The maximum amount of animated tiles that LM allows is 20, I believe. It may be 32, I can't recall. But, as the help file states, using that many is not recommened, as you can expect MONDO slowdown if you use above a certain number (again, I can't recall the exact number). However, if you're just trying to mimick the Layer 3 tide with Layer 2 (or however you are doing it), you shouldn't even come close to that number.

Now, if you were referring to how many custom 8x8 tiles are allowed PER animation, it's 16. If you're asking how many custom 8x8 tiles you can use FOR animation, it's the standard ExGFX size, 128 tiles.

What I usually do is just reduce the red, green, and blue values by a certain amount (not always the same amount for each color), with slight adjustments as needed. For instance, you can achieve a nice night effect by reducing red and green by about 75 and blue by 25 (or something similar, you get the point). Just experiment with palettes, using other games and hacks as examples, and you'll hit your stride in no time.

I've experienced number 3 as well, it's probably just incomplete support for Paper Mario in your emulator.

Tile Counter v0.8

Tile Counter is a little console app that graphics hackers may find useful. It runs through the requested file and counts the number of unique tiles (including mirrored versions). This is very useful for people who want to optimize their graphics and don't want to waste time counting by hand. Current formats supported are 1BPP, NES and GB 2BPP, and SNES 4BPP. Future versions will include other formats if enough desire is shown. A new feature (for all 2 of you who followed previous releases) is the ability to output a version of the file that has all the repeats removed.

Note! Until I allow for dynamic memory allocation, do NOT load very large files. Please report any bugs here or email them to me at jugglingjoker@gmail.com, thanks.

I've never experienced this myself, so generic advice will have to do. Have you tried comparing all your header info with the Dolphin level from the original rom?

About the hack, I think the overworld looks pretty snazzy. It could use some work (especially on the submaps, they're too square), but otherwise, it looks good. It would be nice to have some level screenshots, too.

Err, no. He is referring to the first digit of the number of exits. Because there is no support for more than 2 digits (at least without doing a little hacking), anything after 100 will display the hex equivalent in the tens column.

Well... depending on the compression, JPGs can look as good as PNGs, but the file size would rise dramatically. PNG (or GIF) is the best format to use for screenshots, in my opinion.

You can use GIF, if you know how to use them properly. I think it's safe to say that you don't, so PNG should be your format of choice.
