But Megaman Legends isn't even a Megaman series, that's what I like about it. It's not a part of the universe, they might as well just change the name to something like Tales of the Mother Lode and change people's names around. With the exception of a guy in blue armor and someone named Roll, there's nothing similar about the Legends storyline, timeline, or gameplay as far as other Megaman games go. Saying Legends is just like all of the other Megaman serieses is like saying Breath of Fire is like Dragon Warrior because both of them have some vague affiliation with large fire-breathing lizards. There's so much Capcom could do with this series, Turn it into a whole universe all its own and KEEP IT SIMPLE at the same time. They've obviously learned from the huge mistake they made with the X series; the plotlines in other serieses (BoF, Battle Network, evne the original series) have gotten considerably less ludicrous ever since the sixth X game (which is where it all really went to hell). Even the X series itself, which is where I think all of Capcom's problems have stemmed, has started to pick itself back up with this RPG that's coming along, they might even be able to stabilize the plot a bit and turn the X series, and Megaman in general, back into the interesting, action-packed powerhouse it was in the old days of the NES and SNES.

And as for what is what:

Megaman, Megaman X, and Megaman Zero all take place in the same universe, they're three consecutive pieces of a long plot. Sequels for the original series are pretty much shot, unless Capcom severely changes the game formula away from the 8 robot masters thing or does something like a transitional game between X and Original, Megaman's done for. As for the X series, I'd like to see Capcom start wrapping it up and showing what makes X do the things he does in Zero. All of the serieses need to have an ending at some point, it's just a matter of time before Capcom gets around to it. At that point, Clockworkz, you'd get your wish, and Megaman would finally be dead. Eventually Capcom will realize that nobody wants to play the same game all over again, they're beginning to learn that now (every new Battle Network game has had severe tweaking, I think it's becoming Capcom's test board for new ideas...).

Maybe once the main universe dies, they'll continue Legends, having learned from their experiences.

I played 8, I tried to like it. I really, really did. I just plain couldn't. There were parts of it that were geniusly pulled off (the Balamb Garden coming out of the ground, Moombas, Weapon upgrades, Limit breaks, Irvine being even hotter than Squall IMO), but then there were the shortcomings, like the twinkability of the game. I remember I attached 100 Thundagas (a spell you can get fairly early in the game) to Squall's HP, he was unstoppable for the majority of the game. The player gets a huge kick in the crotch towards the end of the game after relying on their GFs for so long, and the people who never bothered to figure out the Junction system to its fullest extent were just screwed over. While I appreciated the innovation that the Junctioning system provided, and even enjoyed making sure my characters were unbeatable in most situations, I just didn't like the feel of the game. It wasn't bad at all; no FF game has ever truly been horrible in my eyes, even FFX, and no matter how much I complain about X and VIII both had their moments for me. I just think there were better games in the series. VIII also felt too sterile for me, like everything was supposed to happen right when it happened, cleanly and quickly. It felt very linear. Despite all of the exploration a person could do, what did it really matter in the end? New sights? New items? Items were quickly eclipsed by GF abilities (namely Alexander's Revive, and Siren's status healing power). The sights were unresponsive, it was much more entertaining to blaze through the plot (which I did find rather engaging, particularly the relationships that went on outside of the main one between Squall and Rinoa) than to spend meaningless hours walking around in towns. VIII was more about the characters than the world on a whole, whereas in IX, VII, and VI, you really get the feeling that what you are doing has an effect on the entire world rather than the twelve people that VIII centers around. In those three games, you become famous, everyone knows your name, you are the alpha and the omega, and all know of your glorious exploits. In VIII, no matter what you do, you're still getting a salary from SEED even as you battle your way through the horrors of the world and take on the ultimate evil itself. It was like Pirates of the Carribean; Well done, but it felt like things were missing, or some things that were put in were unnecessary. Perhaps I should play it again...

Posted on 08-25-04 06:50 AM, in So, College is coming, and my mother is telling me what I should and should not learn... Link
As several of you may know, I am a senior in high school this year. This means that college is coming up for me, and now my mother feels it is her duty to interfere with my choices in life.

Apparently, she doesn't want me to go to college to educate myself, but to learn to sell myself to people in order to gain a career. I was intending on going to the University of Rhode Island for a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, possibly minoring in either mathematics or music. I wanted to learn to program. I wanted to do it just to be able to do it, because it was a skill that I felt would not only be necessary but also interesting to have. Her exact words to me were "You cannot be Thoreau. You cannot be Emerson, you cannot be Frost." I cannot, in her eyes, learn things for the sake of knowing them, when in fact that is all I want in life. I want to learn! I do not want to become a clone, someone who learns simply for the sake of getting a job and making six figures a year, someone who works unintelligible hours each day to live an empty life driven by money and posession. I want to learn to program so I can spend long nights designing games, writing codes, building webpages for other people, and offering my skill as a service to the world, rather than a mercenarial tool, purchased and thrown away like other tools are.

That's why I've decided something. I'm going to do what she says only for a short time. I'm going to amass as much money as I can in as short a period of time as I can, work as hard as I can and gain the ability to leave this place. I'm going to leave it, I'm going to take with me whatever or whomever I think will be important, I'm going to get a career that allows me to travel as much as I can, whatever I need to do in order to get as far away from this place and see as much of life as I can, to learn as much about the world as I can, and to prove to my mother that life isn't just learning in order to sell oneself, but learning in order to be a better person overall.

I will get away from this place.

No, she wants me to go to college, but she doesn't want me to go there just to learn for learning's sake, she wants me to go so that I can aquire a tool to use to sell myself to the working world. That was pretty much what I was trying to say. But that's not what I want, I want to go to learn, not to get a six-figure job. I'd be just as content living in a shack in Montana with a cat, booby traps around my house, and a huge freaking satellite internet dish as I would in a high-rise apartment with million dollar pieces of art, so long as I had the skill.

Far from not wanting me to grow up, my limit is graduating from college, the moment I do that she's throwing me out. I've got no problems with that, I think it's a good idea to force the baby birds out of the nest when they're ready to fly. In fact, I have told her time and again I have every intention of living on campus when I go to college, just as a bit of training (since it's only slightly like the real thing) for when I leave the house permanently and start life on my own. She wants me to go to college as fast as I can, get a degree, and then leave the house so that I can live without my parents to support me. I can deal with that, she knows full well I'm capable of taking care of myself, and it seems to be the only thing we're in agreement on.

But no, Ranko, she definitely wants me to go to college, it's just that her reasons for wanting me to go to college differ from my reasons for wanting to go.

Leg, let him have his fun.

I think it's cool that you mastered Al Bhed, I remember when playing FFX I wasn't able to crack it until I got about half of the alphabet under my belt. After that it was pretty simple, of course. But learning to type it without any problems? That's excellent. You remind me of another friend of mine, who researches and is currently learning to speak Tolkien Elvish.

In any case, welcome aboard, be sure to take a look at the Sim Battles, Story Forum, and Brain Teasers section, as well as Anya and Christie's and Craziness, they're barrels of fun.

Of course they hurt, would you want to be engulfed in the flames of a cute as hell firebreathing dragon? Didn't think so.

And Neko, a shitload of a lot more than theives can happen in Inns, take it from my campaign:

Night one at the inn, our party druid decides to perform a few rituals which happen to involve taking mulch and using it in a manner similar to marijuana or another narcotic. The end result? A large plant suddenly starts growing in the corner of the inn's common room. The very next day the Innkeeper's missing, and a small pool lined with large teeth and tentacles has appeared. The plant can now speak, bears surprisingly delicious fruit, and is growing large thorns. Of course, he only ate the innkeeper because he thought the innkeeper was dead when it fainted in front of him. Eventually the plant begins to take over the inn, growing around it, replacing cabinets with its ventral sacs, and becoming a living home base for our characters until the town was burned to the ground a few weeks later. So when you say nothing ever happens at inns, don't believe it for a second, and remember that plant.

......I've got a million of 'em.

So how many of you here play Dungeons and Dragons, or some other PNP RPG? I personally dabbled in 2nd ed. D&D, but I've also experimented with GURPS and Werewolf. So come at it, share some stories of weird stuff that happened in your campaigns, or just talk about the rules if you want. I'm sure nobody would mind hearing about RPG systems you've developed in the past or are currently working on, either.

Holy crap, I just got this game a few days ago, and I just plain can't stop playing it! Argh, I've never been this heavily addicted to a Gamecube game, it doesn't make sense. But I'm also going through the game on Hard battle rank rather than Normal, and some of the boss fights are REALLY tough... It took me about ten tries before I could defeat that huge undead looking thing that attacks Iselia before you get banished from there... The fighting is interesting and action-packed, I've always loved games that make you participate in combat, and the tactical thinking involved is top-notch, pulling off my first 20 hit combo without a Unison attack was a real rush. I've always liked the Tales games, but this one really blows them away. I'm a huge fan of the skit system, too. You never know what they'll say next!

All in all, I can't wait to see what happens next. I know Hard mode's definitely gonna be fun.

Near it? I've gone through two characters already in my current one. In fact, my current character (fifth level bard) died technically, but the DM allowed me to stay alive since it was quite obvious that nobody would do something as stupid as I told my character to do. Since then we enacted a special rule: Any character below fifth level gets a second chance when he dies; a piece of Deus Ex Machina from the DM will save his life once. That's it. It's a buffer because although me and my friends are all very intelligent, we're not smart in the least.

Yeah, it would be badass, but then Dance Dance Revolution isn't exactly dancing, Karaoke Revolution isn't exactly Karaoke, and Drummania, while being relatively similar to actual drumming, well, a lone drummer is pretty unorthodox for a crowd attraction.

I'd remake something like the original Balloon Fight, that game kicked ass. Or River City Ransom, but it looks like it's been done. Go figure, eh?

OK, Code Red is awesome. Livewire tastes like an orange Freeze Pop. Baja Blast does indeed rock at the mall where I live (a good drink to have after a few rounds of DDR). Pitch Black? Eh, I drank a bottle of it. It's not bad at all. Not Code Red, but not bad.

Of course, you are all forgetting the maxim that the original is always best...

Until then, my main sources of caffeine are Bawls and Red Bull. Everything else has no effect on me anymore. Take it from me, a person who went through 24 cans of Red Bull in less than 5 days.

And Cy, Red Bull has near-illegal amounts of Caffeine in it. If someone were to make it into a fountain drink, fast food stores would be sued big time for people who had extreme caffeine ODs or died of heart attacks due to drinking 32 ounces at 85mg of caffeine per 8 ounces (the content of Red Bull, if I'm not mistaken?). The bottom line is that although Red Bull tastes like sweet tarts and does indeed wake a person up for a few seconds, overall it'd be a disaster to bring it to fast food restaurants.

The robed figure simply looked at the bomb, and raised his hand.

"Stop." He muttered, closing his eyes and forming a strange seal with his fingers. Instantly the bomb's fuse stopped burning, as time froze around it and put it out.

???: "I would suggest you all leave this place as fast as you can, I cannot hold this for a long period of time, and when I release my grip on the time frame around the bomb, it will begin to burn again. If any of you do not wish to be incinerated, I would suggest a more evasive course of action."

I disagree, here in Rhode Island the legal age of consent is 16. It's very much like that in many places, the "18" rule doesn't really apply anymore. The sex age has changed about as much as the drinking age in the past few years.
