Although I don't hack (anymore yet ), I already longer thought about these blocks in Super Metroid and Metroid: Zero Mission which instantly vanish for a second, you fall through them and they reappear on the same position again.
From below you have no way to get through them, unless they work only once and don't appear again.

Having these in a hack would be really great. Imagine a maze with some optical dead ends and/or shortcuts using these blocks - you are close to the goal and fall down :

I know there are one-way blocks in Blocktool, but they are not exactely the same thing.
Two problems might be there. First, the reappearance itself and maybe the delay to set up it, the animation might be easily done using custom frames/animations in these levels.

The second thing might to prevent the block to reappear "on" Mario and forcing him to die

How about possibility to code these two types of blocks using ASM for the hackers here ?
1.) Blocks which are passable from above, vanish for maybe a second and reappear again. It must not be passable from below.
2.) The same blocks, but they vanish and don't appear again.

Don't forgt people using their computer maybe once per day for ten minutes - checking their Email using the web frontend of their provider or Outlook (Express). They won't need and probably don't want to notice any differences using another browser.

People using the internet for much longer time-spans will get interested into it and see if there's a reliable alternative than IE.

As for that board, when the preview version of a message didn't have another "preview" button, you had to go back manually. Very often Internet Explorer killed my post when I got back - the input field was empty. So until early 2002 - when I still was using IE and then switched to Opera -> Mozilla Suite -> Firebird/-fox - I had to copy the answer, get into preview reply, go back and mostly to reinsert the copied text into the input field. When I had Paint Shop Pro 7 open and I was editing images, I sometimes ended up losing the clipboard text when I copied image data and wanted to post. You were running instant messengers and simply "forgot" or didn't see you just needed to edit your reply

As for Pegasus' page, I'm on ISDN but I really notice major differences between the page viewing in Firefox 1.0 and Internet Explorer 6. While Firefox builds up the layout pretty fast, IE needs about three of four times the time to render the page. And indeed it looks better in Firefox, like nicer frame etc.

Okay, thanks
In the two mentioned Metroid games these blocks may be overused, but I like the idea behind them. So you might "enable" a way from above and then would need to "cross" that location again later - like when carrying a P-switch.

It is possible from below in an easy way - a row of invisible coin question blocks - but the other idea might be interesting, since you don'T see them on first attempt

Save your level, shut down LM and restart it again.
When I still was editing SMW, the inserted custom didn't work until I restarted LM again.+

If Firefox even had an option to continue stopped downloads when continuing the next day (pause only works until you shutdown Firefox ) - hehe, really neat. So you might not need an additional download tool for larger files splitting into several sessions

Don't let fool you about different startup times between IE and Firefox.
The neccessary files are already loaded in Windows and IE uses a lot more than ~20 MB of Firefox, assuming you have no major extensions or 3462 tabs open.. With 5 or 6 tabs and one bigger download Firefox may gu up to 40-50 MB for me, but Opera constantly uses about 60 MB when it's running here

IE may appear to use not that much RAM, but since the "parts" are spread out in Windows, it is a lie - and you'd have to add the RAM usage of all files together to get the exact amount of RAM IS using. Also compare the size between downloading _full_ versions of Firefox and IE. While IE needs about 50-70 MB in full install, Firefox has less than 5 MB in the Win32 version

People already might think what is behind that question, but I'd like to be interested if you already cared about the different options of the most operations () operating systems - such as you might restrict the usage to other people when sharing the computer (little brother or sister, to prevent him/her to install software and only allow to play the games installed etc.) or if you only have your main admin account and you think, "I don't need more accounts than that one".

Note, if you are using Win 9x/ME or another older OS without account management, you automatically have administrator status for all users, since you can do everything from every username created on that machine.

I will contribute my opinion a little later, just need to watch it a little

I made a restricted account one week ago and simply ported over my profile folders from Thunderbird, Firefox into the restricted one.
I rarely install software and my often-frequented emulators work well with a restricted account (might change when I will have my broadband connection in a few weeks )

As for me, I really don't lose too much in comfort. And for Windows Update it doesn't take too long for simply logging off and signing on for me.
If I'd work in an office and was a adminstrator there, I think I'd use restricted accounts only unless it comes to Windows Update or an hardware upgrade.

But, usually it might not be required - since the frequent updates, using not Outlook (Express) and IE might help a lot already
Only really dangerous things are security leaks of Phat- or Agobot, which usually are extremely hard to remove fully and normally require a clean format C: and reinstall of Windows.

Yes, the Junk filter and the filters are very nice.
I made different folders with passwords I requested, internet transactions, ebay etc.
The system sorts out these in a very successful way - as well along with the spam filter on the web frontend (activated) even doubles that effect. I don't receive any spam mail - even the providers' ad mails get into the Junk folder immediately

A scheme only needs these entries, that's the default one from an AcmlmBoard 1.8a copy. I don't think schemes syntax changed too much until 1.93b3, since no one was added for a longer time
But it might not be bad ... *thinks about a Rudra no Hihou scheme *

$bgimage="";
$bgcolor="000000";
$textcolor="E0E0E0";
$linkcolor="FFD040";
$linkcolor2="F0A020";
$linkcolor3="FFEA00";
$linkcolor4="FFFFFF";
$malecolor="97ACEF";
$femalecolor="FEABED";
$bannedcolor="999999";
$tablebg1="000060";
$tablebg2="000036";
$categorybg="001080";
$tableheadtext="FFFFFF";
$tableheadbg="0050A0";
$tableborder="0070C0";
?>

So these entries might be required to fill in checkboxes. People must not be too dumb for that, as for using the same colours for all links and backgrounds - a preview option with s small test setup of a small index.php or a thread might help

C-Up indeed too

Nintendo made a good deal by inventing the N64 controller. There is no equivalent for emulation, so I'm using my Logitech Dual Action (exactely the samt layout like a PS1/PS2 analogue controller), since you never have the ideal setup for the four C buttons

My setup used in games, referred th the PS-joypad layout:

X = A
Square = B
Circle = C-right
Triangle = C-up
Select = C-left (try to play the Ocarina in Zelda OoT like that)
Start = Start (not really )
L1 = L
R1 = R
L2 = Z
R2 = C-down

Nah, I think, I'll put the left C-button to another position for Zelda OoT - since in battle you need to switch quickly

a.) The long and most secure way:
If you have broadband and/or a connection to another person (take it to a friend and try to establish a LAN with your comp), the easiest way might be to download all setup files (installer ) files, save they locally and burn them (if you have a CD burner) or send them to the other computer.
Then simply reformat the drive fully and reinstall Windoze ME. EDIT: I recommend, like Karadur, rather Windows 2k, which runs fluently on older computers, unlike Windows XP.
After you are done, please get AntiVir, Spybot, a firewall from tip b.) and don't forget Windows Update.

b.) The shorter way, may not be successful, but you can try it anyway.

Take your time, that's imho the best freeware antivirus (I used it on my old PII and am using it on my AMD XP 2800+ too), at least in Germany, and thus doesn't take too much RAM. There is also an English version available:

AntiVir (English)
Spybot Search & Destroy
Ad-Aware

All three tools don't need to much RAM and are finished pretty fast. Make sure you update them just after install, boot into safe mode and perform a full scan with every one, of course only one program at a time.

When you are done, go to Windows Update, only works in IE:
Click me
The final tool you should need is HiJack This!
Download

Unzip it anywere, run it, click on "Scan" -> "Save log", after you were prompted to save it to a location, copy ALL the stuff within the opened editor window and post it here.

Don't remove anything by going selecting the checkbox and "Fix checked" - that would be our task to see, if any mal- or spyware starts up when you boot into Windows.

What about copying the music folder to your sister's profile ?
An admin can access all limited accounts anyway, if not, simply copy it into the Shared Documents folder. So you won't need to get her admin powers just for listening music. Only Winamp Playlists and shortcuts needed to be updated only once.

My sister wants to play some game that she downloads, but she can't install it, so I have to install it with my rights, and lo, the game won't run under a limited profile

Try to use the "Run As ..." option when you right-click an executable file in your sister's limited account. The other checkbox prompts you to use another account (don't worry, the password stays invisible and the chars are replaced by stars/dots) - it does not work for every program, but mostly the program simply starts in context of the user set up in Run As ... - it might be worth a shot

Important:
Ensure, there is NO other antivirus installed or if there is another software firewall installed (_excluding_ the Windows one of course) before installing an antivirus or firewall.

Two virus scanners or two firewalls disturb themselves, so only one should be used. In some cases it even could hook up the system; most people know that, but just in case something happens

Windos ME _can_ run fine if you disable the System Restore option. I reinstalled ME only once in four years (hence my laziness ), but I never got System Restore to work properly and it seemed, it ran even better without it.

On the other hand, without Windows XP's version of System Restore I might be fugged up, since the upgrade of Sygate firewall (I made a _clean_ uninstall) cocked up my system after booting - uninstall even didn't work in Safe Mode - so I managed to restore the system before that and it worked. The consequence was a backup of my data on a DVD immediately - just to ensure everything

Simply select Thread Layout in your profile to "Regular, without number/bar graphics" temporary (or for a longer time ), also improves speed slightly when having a smallband connection only.

The memory of the GFX card cen go _up_ to 64 MB - and is taken off the physical memory (RAM).
Running games like Doom3 or Half Life 2 fluently might be pretty impossible, maybe with low details. Even my GeForce MX4000 (128 MB, APG-slot) won't be able to run of those games fluently in middle or even high detail, but since I anyway don't play games except N64, PSX and other systems, it doesn't matter.

If you are looking for a decent system for gaming mainly, avoid on-board video cards. Usually an external one, like a Radeon 9800Pro might be better, although much more expensive. As said, it heavily what you want to do with the computer mainly.
