EMU = European Monetary Union. Denmark, which still has kroner, not Euro, is not in it. (Incidentally, did you know that there was once a Scandinavian Monetary Union. It dissolved in 1914, and is the reason why all Scandinavian countries has kroner (also quite fun to note that the Scandinavian EU-members are the only ones not to join the EMU (except for Britain)))

The system of elections in Sweden makes it possible for substantial minorities with radical opinions from all parts of the political spectrum to be heard, the system of elections in the US ensures that only the mainstream majority of the two biggest fractions of the political spectrums have a say. I disagree with a "man tax" just as much as you, but I respect democracy, and I respect the people holding these opinions's right to vent them in a political forum, especially if a significant enough percentage of the people feel they are the best suited to represent them in the Parliament. You could make an argument that they shouldn't be allowed to have a say, I respect that, too, of course (I'm no hypocrite), but what you are making an argument for is restrictions on democracy, and I don't believe that is the right way to go, so I disagree with you when you say "it's hard to respect societies that would seriously consider a "man tax"", since what you're saying is that it's hard to respect societies that allow open, democratic fora.

And, no, the EU would not provide troops for Iran if the US invaded. However, I believe the EU can make for a more just world. As one man stated at the seminar titled "USA vs. EU" I was just at, when you have to have the consensus of 25 countries before deciding to have a military intervention in a country, it is more likely that that military intervention will be carried out in the interest of human rights, not in the self-interest of one single country.
The EU will never attack the US, or have a conflict with the US, however, I believe the EU can steer the world in a more democratic, human rights-oriented direction. That's how the EU will balance the US.

E) Because they're cooler than pirates or ninjas will EVER be. (That's right, I said ninjas you otaku fucks.)
F) Lost Vikings for Snes kicked ass.
G) Their ships were a lot more bad ass than Columbus' "boats".

H) Because they were my ancestors, and I think that's cool.
I) Because Norse mythology > Other mythology. Honestly, if you're only going to read one mythological story this year, read about when Thor goes fishing. It ilustrates how the vikings understood that good gods can do bad, and vice verca (i.e. the World ain't black/white, it comes in shades). That's an even more advanced picture of the world than what many of today's modern religions display!

Oh, and shush, you Swedes. Swedish vikings traveled down the rivers in Russia, Norwegian vikings traveled across the open seas and discovered Iceland, Greenland (aka The biggest publicity stunt in the history of the world), and America. That's so much cooler! (just kiddin' with y'all..)

Columbus was not a Spaniard. He was sailing for the Spanish king, yes, but he was very much Italian.

Well, there is the whole "rainy election day makes for republican win"-thing. Republicans statistically hold a better chance of winning when the voter-turnout is low, so why would they want him to register voters?

Jack-Al, now I couldn't open the two links you linked to, but the first one had Shanghai in the file-name, and Shanghai is in China, not Japan.

And there is this urban legend about Ronald McDonald being a failed advertising trick in Japan because white is a face of death in Japan, or something. I tried to check it up on snopes.com, but couldn't find it.

Oh, and on references to international McDonald's restaurants, I'm sure you're all familiar with the "Royale with cheese"..

Oh, and by the way. The McDonald's restaurant in my hometown, Halden, is one out of four McDonald's restaurants in the world that has actually had to shut down because of bankruptcy. (It did, however, re-open with new owners a few months later and is doing ok now, I think).

Er, the only Royale I'm familliar with is a brand of tissue/toilet paper. I don't think it comes with cheese...

It's from Pulp Fiction. Vincent and Jules discuss French McDonald's-restaurants, and Vincent tells Jules that, because of the Metric system, a Quarter Pounder with Cheese is called a Royale with Cheese (which I found odd, since in all other Metric countries I've been to, they call it a Quarter Pounder).

The electoral college should not be abolished, however, it should be changed. Delegates should be elected to the electoral college through proportional representation, not through single-district plurality voting. I've explained my stand on this many times, so I don't think any further explanation would be needed, unless somebody wants it, that is.

Well, now, Jesper, don't misunderstand me. I'm not against the new iPod, I'm just wondering how useful it is. I might actually get it, though, seeing as how I just inherited 40000 NOK and I need a new portable music player. Still, though, you can't help but wonder how useful it really is.

It's been ordered. iPod Photo 60GB with my name engraved on it. Should be here in 1 to 2 weeks.

(Yeah, I know, so I change my mind quickly )

Well, I just watched Steve Jobs's entire press conference regarding the release of the new iPods (Photo and U2), and he won't go Video because he feels video is a step in the wrong direction (video poses problems with copyright-issues (as oposed to pictures, which are your own), the fact that there are no videos available for a machine like that at the moment, and that the screens would most likely be too small). Also, he expanded iTunes Music Store now, to 9 European countries. And in November it will come to Canada, as well. Still no go for neither Norway nor Sweden, though, so if I want to by music from Apple, I'll have to go to Finland.

Seems to me Apple doesn't like having to deal with the smaller currencies, since it's coming to a lot of EU countries, but not to Sweden and Denmark (non-EMU countries). So far, you can find iTunes Music Store in only three countries, USD, Euro, and Pound Sterling. And then Canadian Dollars in a few days.

From a utilitarian point of view: Go ahead, pull the trigger.
From a deontological point of view: Don't kill him.

Me? I'm a consequentialist.
