Here's what happens when you die: Your heart stops beating, oxygen stops reaching your brain, you have a few last flickering thoughts and then your synapses stop firing. Your personality and memories cease to exist. Then you begin to decompose... worms burrow into your rotting flesh, maggots infest your skull. Wait, no, you go to a big country-club type place and hang out with Jesus and Mark Twain and your long lost relatives. My mistake. |

I agree, Danielle, we totally need to, like, torture people and make them suffer. The justice system's not about protecting the public or rehabilitating people, it's about REVENGE AND TORTURE.

So why are people so bent on vengeance and torture and other such righteous "they're all evil and should SUFFER" nonsense? What difference does it make to you? Why the dehumanisation and bloodthirstiness? Why the desire to see people suffer? Whould our prisons all be like Turkish or Indonesian cells? This is why they don't let emotional mobs of people mete out justice... we have this really vicious vindictive streak in us that is really disturbing. |

You really wanna empower the state to inflict things like that on people, and employ people to inflict things like that on people?

Actually Zero, I hate children, and if biology and society somehow tricks me into having them I'm going to keep them in line through a sophisticated regime of psychological torture. But that's largely irrelevant here. What I'm saying is that the tendency for people to get hysterical about, say, kiddie-fiddlers and try to outdo each other suggesting bloodthirsty torments for them is quite disturbing and calls to my mind mobs stoning people. A disturbing number of people want to enshrine rage and emotionalism and vengeance into a rational and objective justice system and that's fucked up. When the government incarcerates someone, they have a certain responsibility and a certain duty of care. They can't just lock them in an open enclosure in Alaska and call it a prison and say it's okay because they broke the law - they have certain responsibilities and one of those is to not fucking treat them sadistically. The punishments proscribed are INCARCERATION FOR A FIXED TIME PERIOD not the taking away of all human rights and dignity. And really, occupied, entertained prisoners are less likely to riot and kill guards or each other. And what's with the assumption that anything more than a small minority in prisons are "murderers and serial killers and OTHER EVIL PEOPLE"? THe vast, vast majority are people caught with a joint, petty thieves, tax evaders, people who got into a drunken fist-fight, and so forth. Hardly evil people who deserve to be robbed of all fucking petty little pleasures because a few whiney moralistic cranks outside the walls say they should be made to suffer more. You guys get days before hand to prepare your arguments? Wow, that's weird. We get half an hour or 15 minutes depending on the debate format... |

Generally, I sleep from 2 oe 3 am or so to about 11 or midday, sometimes later. I've cleverly found myself an apartment right next to uni, and gotten myself all afternoon classes, so except the occasional Tuesday where I start work at 8am, I'm golden. That's a massive strawman, or perhaps a series of strawpeople, followed by a series of questions that I don't think relate to the arguments about incarceration conditions and such. Poor form. When has self-defense come into this? Why all the focus on psychotic murderers when the vast majority of prison inmates are there for much lesser crimes? |

Hmm, I see. The model is the main thing of importance in this format.

If your perfect society requires people to be cast out to make it work, then it strikes me that it ain't perfect at all. Any societal organisation would work great if you didn't have to deal with everyone. And history shows us that establishing systems that, by definition, exclude certain people requires fairly harsh measures against them. So really, unless your perfect society includes violent purges and starvation camps and such, it's fantasy. What about when those guys you kick out all get together, arm and organise themselves and attack you and steal your stuff and probably kill some of you for good measure? Fancy a civil war? How are you going to make sure these "greedy" people that you want to cast out don't try and, you know, fight back? Again, I posit that short of sticking them in camps, killing them outright or driving them away through violence or threat of violence, you're not going to be able to break their political power to the extent that your system will even manage to get established, let alone make itself work. Finally. "simply that there is no government, and people are allowed to govern themselves." ¿Qué? Ignoring the contradiction within that sentence, I'd just like to point out that this is what systems ranging from Italian fascism to liberal democracy to Russian bolshevism has claimed to be doing. People *are* aware that crime is on a steady downward trend in most parts of the developed world, right? Why are people MORE scared and worked up about crime now when there's LESS crime? Why the tone of urgency and hysteria and crisis? What's so wrong with the criminal justice system that people feel it needs to be fundamentally dumped and overhauled? I submit that this "crime crisis" has been blown all out of proportion by a sensationalist media and a paranoid population. |

A massive student walkout would basically be civil disobedience in support of the teachers. |

Isn't that a very three-dimensional way of looking at things? Nothing in the universe can be created or destroyed (matter or energy), it just runs in an endless cycle of different forms. In fact, nothing in the universe truly had a beginning and won't have an end, so doesn't it follow that the universe itself would have much the same properties perhaps running in an endless cycle of contraction and expansion?
