I have a few job possibilities open. But a 12 year streak of education is just about enough for now. I could ofcourse continue studying, but a) I don't bloody want to, not right away at any rate and b) by then the things I have learned during these last three years would be obsolete already. I had two glasses of champagne and three glasses of cider. That doesn't even qualify YOU, mr "^___________ |

Originally posted by JarukothThis isn't your fault, but people that say that annoy the fuck out of me. I've spent the last three years learning stuff. In three years I can either a) work my way up to a decent salary, and get some experience working, or b) I can go to school for three more years despite being tired of going to school, and learn the same stuff I'll learn by going to work and keeping in touch with the new things in the industry, and still have as much work experience as I have now (next to none). People forget that when you've worked for a while, especially in the computer industry, and especially if you work for a company that "gets it", you will get education through your work. You will go to courses, you will get time while working that you can use to catch up with new stuff, and you will continually update yourself by working on new projects. You essentially get the gist of what you would get by going to school, except that in most cases you won't have had a teacher, and you won't get a grade. Employers with their head on straight will know that work experience counts just as much as education, and if you manage to keep yourself updated without going to school, that counts for a lot, right? |

This article is so full of shit it's not even funny. As I told Max yesterday, here's what they patented: The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on April 27 granted a patent for a "time based hardware button for application launch" in which a click of a button can start different programs if it is clicked once, twice or held down for several seconds. That means they patented a system that incorporates ALL those things at once. They didn't patent single clicking, double clicking or time-sensitive clicking. They patented putting all that together in a specific way. In fact, if double clicking hadn't been invented, they would probably have described it in the brief as "clicking the same button twice in succession in a short amount of time". The fact that there is a phrase called "double clicking" means that there's a lot of what's called "prior art", ie that it's been done before, and thus you can't patent it. They won't approve it, at least. Yet another example of why there are lots of losers not sufficiently accustomed to reading comprehension. Please use your brains, folks, and stop going "Oh, that wacky Patent office / Microsoft corporation, what won't it do next?". Edit: [17:14:03] wootest: it's like if someone patented a wooden keyboard those asshats would say OMFG WOOD HAS BEEN PATENTED [17:14:18] salsaflies: XD! That's how stupid this is. Originally posted by AcmlmYes, that's new, and that's why they patented it. And yes, it was around before Windows (Mac, the Xerox PARC OSes and even earlier). Originally posted by Kitten YifferIt did. They probably believe that themselves. |

Most animals have very pragmatic communication, and a lot of species only have sounds for other animals. They need to be able to say "Here comes a tiger" and "Here comes a snake", but they don't need to say "Here comes one of my own" because they're still on the stage where communication is still used primarily (and only, in some cases) to alert others in case of danger or other important information ("I found lots of food"). | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Originally posted by YarxI don't get experience by going to school. I don't get formal education by going to work. Either way I choose, there's a tradeoff. I pick working instead of going to school because I believe that I can get a great deal of experience in three years. My plan includes going to courses on weekends or evenings (or through work; any employer good enough to want some education from me will also realize growth potential in employees and will send you to courses) eventually, but I'd rather build a foundation first, and that includes getting a job ASAP. Going to school for three years (while ofcourse meriting and a learning experience) is not ASAP. I have made a personal judgement that I know enough stuff to be broad (many languages/techniques) and yet above average at most of them. I also learn new stuff very fast. Any employer not realizing the potential in that after a fair interview and some good tests doesn't know the business good enough to have my attention. It should also be noticed that I'm in a unique position. I can work freelance and build web sites and the like, or work full-time either as a dedicated programmer or as the "computer guy" in a company. I certainly have many choices beyond going to school, and a good opportunity to rack up experience pretty easily. In case someone's wondering about my grades not being good enough, I ended HALF of my classes with the highest possible grade. I didn't fail one class, and I attended about 99% of the classes, including sick days. |

Okay, since this is brought up every once in a while, and a lot of stuff for various users is hosted on wootest.net, I thought I might as well do a survey. To fill out, quote this post and enter answers below each question. |
If you go to http://i.am.a.wootest.net, does it load? If Yes: - Do files off of wootest.net take time to load for you? - If yes, do they regularly load slow, and is there a difference between multiple locations with similar real connection speed? If No: (If you have set your hosts file to resolve wootest.net to another IP, unset it temporarily while performing these tests.) Open the command prompt or terminal application on your system - (Start, Run, "command" in Windows or opening an application called something similar to "xterm" or "Terminal" or being in the shell in UNIX variants (Linux, Mac OS X)) - and perform these tests. - Please "ping" wootest.net and paste the four first results here. The command in both Windows and UNIX variants (Linux, Mac OS X) is ping wootest.net. In UNIX variants, you'll need to hit Ctrl+Z to stop the ping program. - Please do a "trace route" on wootest.net and paste the result here. In Windows, use the command tracert wootest.net. In UNIX variants, use traceroute wootest.net. This information will be very helpful to me. The connection as of today could be a lot faster, and in fact a newer connection will be installed around week 30. (The current week number.)

Originally posted by SionJesus was a Jew. For the sake of an argument, let's assume Jesus was God's son. His human form was still a jewish man. This kind of mistakes with some religions shooting themselves in the foot by completely ignoring actual facts is what keeps me an atheist. Diety or no diety, logic is pretty hard to argue with. Second of all, stop saying "the Jews did this, the Jews did that". If you absolutely HAVE to point out a majority of some sort to blame it all on, the population of Jerusalem did it, not every Jew on earth. |
