This should hold most people 'till the release of FCEUXD I've never gotten into NES hacking too much, but with tools like this being made, it's becoming easier, and more possible to do

Now, a couple things I noticed:

1) Is support for zipped ROMs going to be implemented in the future? I ask, because most of my NES ROMs are zipped up, and it'd be a pain to have to unzip all of them
2) Open the emulator and go to the Open ROM dialog box. Click the arrow beside 'Files of type:'. The second one in the list, which I think is supposed to be '*.*' says 'Unknown Return value from checkHeader()

I'll mess around with this a bit more, and see if anything else comes up. Nice emulator so far

It's not only Yoshi's Island hacks, I think. You'll notice that hukka's released an SMB3 editor that works nicely, and is pretty easy to use, and it even shows the game graphics, unlike EggVine. You'd think there'd be quite a few hacks for this game released by now, but there's been barely any if none released at all since the editor was available for download

Here's a screenshot of the Open dialog box thing:

I'm using XP Home SP2, but you'll probably want to wait to see if other people have the same problem

As far as what I said about FCEUXD, take a look at the thread here to see what I mean. There's always the chance that your emulator will still have features that one doesn't, but either way, if it makes NES hacking easier, it's good

ATTENTON. That's good Redirecting newly registered members to the FAQ is fine, but what if you get someone who just wants to blaze through everything, and start posting right away? You could have a checkbox or something down at the bottom of the page like most other sites do, that tells them they must abide by the rules and such, but then they're likely to just skip through that as well

I don't see why it would hurt to still tell them to take a look at the FAQ. Just in case

Well, as long as this board's safe, that alleviates most of the worry. I just looked on google news now, and the earliest something has been written up on this was one hour ago. Here's a link if you can't be bothered to run the search yourself

http://news.google.com/news?tab=gn&q=neverevernosanity&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&filter=0

Those sites have an explanation of how it works, which is through a special google search.

As long as antivirus companies have picked up on it, it's pretty much up to the owners of the sites that got defaced to restore from a backup, then upgrade to PHP 2.0.11.

1) Extract the GFX in Lunar Magic (Red Mushroom button). If you extracted the GFX as seperate files, open GFX00.bin in your tile editor of choice (I use YY-CHR). If you use the same program, choose the 4BPP SNES option in the first dropdown list, and if you use another tile editor, just mess around with the view settings 'till the graphics appear properly. If you extract the GFX as one file, open it like you would've in the step above, and just look around the start for the 'Nintendo Presents' tiles,

2) You have to change the level properties (Mario's Head button in Lunar Magic). I'm not sure which option you have to pick, but one of them should show the proper background for the boss level and such, then you can put in sprites or whatever you want. You need to change the level type back to what it was before after you're done making your changes,

3) From what I read in the Lunar Magic 1.62 sticky thread, you're supposed to be able to just press a number key, and it'll jump to the first matching hex number for the sprite that it finds. There may be more to it than that, but that's all I know as far as it.

4) Besides changing colors randomly, and hoping you find the right one, I don't think so

5) Not quite sure on this one. I think that level's specially designed so it ends after you hit all the cards, since if you try putting that sprite in another level and play it, the level won't end after you hit all the cards

6) Other than putting a solid block right after the goal sphere, I don't know how to do this either. Most likely something you can change in a hex editor, but it may be something you have to do with ASM, in which case it gets harder.

7) What exactly are you having trouble with here? As far as I know, all you need is to have a key and a keyhole in a level, and things should work fine. Unless the level's not set up to use two exits in the overworld editor I'll wait to see exactly what you're trying to before I explain that

Inevitably, someone's going to post a link to the sticky thread with hints for Newbies, telling you to look there, but I hope you've already thought to do that

I think whoever bought the game for me got it, thinking it was something like the Age of Empires games (I like those). I can't say I completely hated Civ 2 and 3. They were alright, but they were too slow-paced for me (mostly the fact that the game was turn based).

I also didn't play it that much because of the computer we had back then. It was somewhere in between the minimum and recommended requirements. It loaded fine, but there was about a 1 in 3 chance that when trying to load a saved game, the computer would freeze up, and I sure wasn't going to start a new game every time

If you like it though, that's quite fine with me

There is, if I understand what you're asking right. Open up the Overworld Editor, and click the button to the left of the blue switch button. From there, select the tile you want to filp, and click either the Flip X, or Flip Y checkbox, or both, depending on which way you want to flip them

Edit: Also, you can create your own path pieces from the 8x8 tiles. Make sure you're in 8x8 editing mode (click the button metioned above), select the tile you want to have as a piece of your path, and right click over one of the empty spaces. Here's a screenshot to show you what I mean. Anything after the first 16x16 tile on the second row is made from other 8x8 tiles:

If I give the level 'No Event' in the level settings nothing happens when I complete it, while if I give it 'Event 7' which I saw another level contain, just to test it out, the screen goes black and i can't see the road or new level, but I CAN go up to the new level. So I'm guessing your'e supposed to assign events as you create them, but how would you go about doing so?

When I was figuring out the Overworld editor, I just erased the first 5 or so events, so I'd have something to work with. There's no reason that wouldn't work for you

"This may mean that I need to explain computer terminology to some clients, where in other cases, this is not necessary."

The two instances of 'this' are what I noticed. Some replacements you could have:

1) In some instances, I may need to explain computer terminology to a client, while in other cases, this is not necessary.
2) In some cases, I may need to explain computer terminology to a client, while in others, this is not necessary.

"Sometimes this also means that I use pictures (screenshots) when words alone will not effectively communicate the information necessary."

To me, having necessary at the end just doesn't sound right You could replace it with either of these:

:: That is required
:: That is needed

Then you could also take a look at thesaurus.com, search for necessary, and pick the word you like most out of the results that come up

Now, on the thing in the last sentence of your first main point. I can only think of two sentences you could use right now, which are these:

"This requires me to have questions ready for the client in order to be able to solve the problem quickly."
"This requires me to quickly prepare questions for the client in order to be able to solve the problem promptly."

Once again, no spelling mistakes that I could find. It's sounding good so far though

Figures. I was actually writing something up telling you how to go about setting an event to take place after you beat a level, but I reread your post, and thought you were asking something completely different I'll just type it again. Right off the bat though, this assumes that you want to do something with the first and second levels of your hack, the first level is not Yoshi's House, and it only has one exit.

1) Place the two levels on the overworld. One should be visible (use the 16x16 Overworld Tile Selector box, in Layer 1 16x16 Editor mode), and the other should be transparent (use the 16x16 Overworld Tile Selector box in Layer 1 Event Editor mode).

2) Open up the Level Settings dialog box for the first level, and choose the event you want the level to activate once it's beaten. For this 'tutorial', we'll assume you chose event 0.

3) Open the Level Settings dialog for the second level, and down in the list titled "Reveal this level tile on any of these events" choose the event that you set in the previous step (in this case, event 0)

4) Put down a path between the two levels with Layer 1 16x16 Editor mode, and the 16x16 Overworld Tile Selector.

5) Save the overworld, then if need be, save any changes in the main Lunar Magic window, then load up your ROM in your SNES emulator. Beat the first level, and the second level should appear.

That doesn't go over making paths appear on the overworld, but I'll wait to see if you need help with that. Hopefully you understand the above, and that's what you were looking for

Posted on 12-22-04 08:30 AM, in Prepare for a new hack! (Demo) Link
I'll download and try this demo just as soon as I make comments on the screenshots. First off, if it's at all possible for you, do take the screenshots in ZSNES (F1, Save Snapshot). You can set it to save them as .png files, which, from my experience, keeps the screenshots looking pretty much the same as when you play the game.

1) Like Keikonium posted, the background looks bad. You could try outlining everything in black, or light brown, which would look a whole lot better in my opinion. I like how you changed the palette of the Pokeys here. They look good. The ground, to me, looks like cheese Darkening it up a bit might make it look better. You should try to make the pillars a different color than the rest of the ground, because the way they are now makes it look like they're solid, which you can tell is not true by looking at the second Pokey.

2) Is the powerup Mario has here some sort of leaf shooter? That's what it looks like right now You say it takes place in the canopy of a jungle, but if that's the case, then where are all the leaves (aside from the background, I mean)? The brown coins don't stand out very much from the rest of the level, which will most likely make them a bit hard to see when playing the hack, if you leave them that way. The piranha plant stalks are debatable, but I think they look alright like they are.

3) The light grey background really doesn't fit it very well. The missing piece of the platform should be addressed. You can change the maximum number of sprites displayed on the screen at once in the Sprite Header Properties box in Lunar Magic (Lakitu's head button). I'm not sure what you want to set it to, so I hope someone else does.

4) Aside from the stretched ground, there's nothing wrong I can see here. The edited Koopas are good

5) The modified Para-Koopas and Koopas are the first thing that caught my eye here. They look really good The screen is a bit crowded with vines though. Is the rest of the level like that? If it is, you may want to consider removing a few vines here and there

6) Nothing wrong that I could see here. It looks nice

Criticisms aside, this is looking good for your first SMW hack

As for the new Zelda game, this is the site I check on when I want to find out if anything new's been said about it.

I'm looking forward to playing this game. Like most other people that've played Wind Waker, I was rather dissapointed after seeing the demo movie of Link fighting Ganon, how it looked so real and such, only to find out what Wind Waker looked like

I hope they keep with the real-looking style for the next game though. Back when the first movie came out for it, I was amazed at what the game looked like, and if I go back and watch it again, it makes me all the more excited for it's release

That is, if you're referring to the Zelda game that's supposed to be coming out for Gamecube. I've not heard anything about a new GBA game, besides what Anya said

I find it pretty believable that he beat the game within that time. The most recent speedrun I could find is here, and that's in 54 minutes.

The run Emptyeye's done would be something to see. That's quite a chunk of time to have cut off from the previous one. Click the link to view the author's comments on the movie at that site, and it'll tell you some, or most of the tricks the 'author' used.

If you want to edit the graphics of Yoshi's tongue, take a look at your old thread here.

As far as disabling the button press for Yoshi's tongue, that would most definitely involve ASM, and by the posts already made in this thread, what exactly you'd need to change isn't known right now

Disabling the button press would solve both problems, but editing the graphics should do just as well, because if the player can't see Yoshi's tounge, I doubt they'll go to the trouble of trying to eat something with it.

Why exactly do you want to disable it anyways? I'm just curious, that's all

Posted on 12-23-04 12:15 AM, in PSP :: It's Okay, You Can Touch This One Link
Very nicely said, Kirby PopStar. I haven't wanted to get a PSP for the following reasons.

:: Loading times. I forget where the site was that I read it on (it could've been here, for all I know), but apparently the loading times are horrible. Some racing game was being put under review, and from power on to the main menu of the game was something like 20 seconds. I see that in other games sometimes, but that's because of the different company logos and stuff they put in there.

:: Battery life. I'd hope they plan on making a power adaptor for the thing. The life of the battery right now is horrible. If they don't make an adaptor for it, then one would hope they would sell the batteries for cheap. Maybe they can be recharged or something, but then, is that something you can do youself, or do you have to take it to some place and pay them to recharge it?

:: I've never been a big fan of Sony's systems / consoles in the first place. Rather self-explanatory, but I wouldn't go out and by a handheld system made by Sony, when I've barely played games designed for either of their other systems. That's just a personal preference thing. I'm sure someone else that posts here will think differently.

So, take it for what you will, but I don't plan on buying one of these
