Short answer: English fluently/natively, plus a slight amount of German (certainly not fluent), and a handful of other languages and/or writing systems.

Long answer: I'm a native and very fluent speaker of English. I have had a few years' worth of German language instruction in High School, and it is my second-best-known language, though my skill at it has been declining in the time since I took those classes.

I also have (or have had) various cursory levels of knowledge of other languages and/or writing systems, including Esperanto (which I was briefly seriously trying to learn until I lost interest, and I've forgotten much of it), Katakana (one of the writing systems employed in the Japanese language), Hangul (the writing system of the Korean language), and the Greek alphabet (though not the Greek language), the latter of which was augmented by my work in performing the hacking part of the English-to-Greek translation of FF1.

One hobby of mine, for the last several years, has been the construction of my own language (a "conlang"); my username is an example of it in use. The language consists of a grammatical structural base, and a well-defined writing system, though it lacks vocabulary since I'm consciously trying to avoid "taking" words from other languages.

Not necessarily; the face looks alright. The major problems I see are:
  • She has hardly any hips to speak of.
  • Her right shoulder (her right side = left side of image) is out too far; it should be partially behind the chest.
  • Her legs (thighs and calves) are straight, not curvy.
Another nitpick would be that, although her left shoulder (her left side = right side of image) looks passable, the side of her breast should have been shaded in to give depth; it kinda looks like one breast is wider than the other.

Oh, and next time, save it in PNG, or at least GIF, format.

I actually find myself in agreement with Geeogree. If I were religious, I would consider this a sign of the impending apocalypse. If you're religious, you should, though, and send me gobs of money and swear your everlasting allegiance to me, that disaster might be averted. Do it before it's too late!

Note that "Christ" is a title, not a name, and technically "Jesus" and "Christ" refer to different things. This is why you sometimes hear the Christian character referred to as "Christ Jesus" (in much the same way as one might say, for example, "Ambassador Smith"), or as "Jesus the Christ".

That said, you might prove up and down that Jesus was an actual historical figure. However, whether or not this Jesus was The Christ is another matter altogether. Christian theology maintains that he was (as opposed to was not). Non-christians (such as yours truly) might maintain that there is no such thing as "Christ" (implying that Jesus, if he existed, was not The Christ), so whether or not Jesus existed is a relatively unimportant matter.

Or, put another way: proving that Jesus existed is not, by itself, proof that Jesus was The Christ.

Posted on 06-03-05 06:01 PM, in 2005 NBA Playoffs Link
These Playoffs seem rather about cold hard reality instead of dreams. With the 2004 MLB playoffs, the Red Sox were pushed to the brink, then came back with a terrible vengeance to be only the third team in the MLB, NBA or NHL to dig themselves out of a 0-3 hole in a best-of-7 series, then never trailed in scoring during the WS, kicking the holy hell out of the "Curse of the Bambino". Such greatness is representative of dreams. These NBA Playoffs are not.

After game 1 of the Western Conference First Round series between the Spurs and Nuggets, the Nuggets, the underdog #7 seed, come out of nowhere to steal a road win against the #2 Spurs, who are nearly unassailable at home, and assume a 1-0 lead. Hmm....might turn into a more interesting series than it looked at first, and who knows? Maybe the Nuggets can prevail!

*bonk* Spurs win game 2.
*bonk* Spurs win game 3.
*bonk* Spurs win game 4.
*bonk* Spurs win game 5, win 4-1, proceed to the conference semifinals. So much for that!

After game 3 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals series between the Heat and Wizards (the Heat assuming a 3-0 lead), there was much optimism from the Wizards camp, saying they just had to win 4 in a row like they did against the Bulls in the first round. Yeah! We can do it!

Heat win game 4, win 4-0, proceed to the Eastern Conference Finals. So much for that!

There was even more optimism after game 4 of the Western Conference Finals... the Spurs had assumed a 3-0 lead, then the Suns averted a sweep with a game 4 win. There was much optimism; one of the headlines at nba.com read "1 down, 3 to go"... could they become the first team in the NBA to dig themselves out of a 0-3 hole to win a best-of-7 series? If there's any team that could accomplish that, one would think it would be the #1-ranked team in the regular season who at least had home court advantage in the series, and who recently got back one of its key players (Joe Johnson).

Spurs win game 5, win 4-1, proceed to the NBA Finals. So much for that!

And Game 6 of the Sonics-Spurs series.... Spurs leading 3-2, Sonics at home, trailing 98-96, they've got the ball, inbound, 3-point shot at the buzzer for the win! *plonk* off the rim.

Spurs win game 6, win 4-2, proceed to the Western Conference Finals. So much for that!

As this is written, the Spurs are on for the Finals, and the Heat have assumed a 3-2 lead over the Pistons... this after my original prediction that the Pistons would take the Heat 4-1, maybe 4-2.

However, with Dwayne Wade minus an intact rib, I still think the Pistons will prevail. Game 6 is tomorrow at Detroit, which I'm sure they'll win, and with one of the Heat's key players watching from the sidelines, it boils down more towards Shaq, who, as the 2004 Finals demonstrated, is no guarantee of success against a certain NBA team from Detroit, Michigan.

Which leaves us with, assuming my prediction is correct, the Spurs and Pistons left to duke it out for the championship; the Spurs will have home-court advantage, though unless the series is close, it's a de-facto advantage for the Pistons, since the Pistons' three home games are all played in a row (A-A-B-B-B-A-A), so for the first five games, the Pistons are the ones with home-court advantage.

And the Pistons are certainly more competent at defense than the Suns were... I think they could hold out against the Spurs. 4-2 or 4-3 Pistons, maybe 4-1 if I'm misunderestimating them.

Should be an interesting series nonetheless. I'm rooting for the Pistons all the way, though if the Heat manage to prevail (in which case I don't think they'd manage to take the Spurs even if Wade's warranty hadn't expired) I'll find myself rooting for them over the Spurs. Although I don't like the Spurs, I still have found myself with grudging respect for them.

Just wish Duncan would shave, though.

Well, I remember reading about the "September that never ended", i.e. September 1993 when AOL users first became able to access Usenet. Usenet had been around plenty before then.

The Internet didn't "go public" in 1994, it just started to become mainstream.

The metal can look shinier if the highlighted part is not touching the edge, and also by adding some shading on the opposite side (also away from the edge). That way, it doesn't look like the lightening continues onward (which would be the case with soft highlighting).

For example, compare the left side of the top of the head, with the right side. On the left side, the highlighting doesn't touch the edge; on the right side, it does. The left side looks more rounded and, more to the point, shinier; the right side looks like it's flat and with a bevelled edge.

Make that 3-2 Spurs. After four blowouts in a row, Game 5 winds up down to the wire all the way, including a session of Overtime and a game— and the outlook of the series as a whole— decided on one point.

Gotta hand it to Horry (of the Spurs), though, who was taking names and kicking ass in Overtime, with a classic dunk and a 3-point shot to take the lead. The Spurs earned that one, to be sure. The final play was by Rip Hamilton (of the Pistons) who got gang-banged into making a layup that scarcely reached the backboard, let alone the basket. One play to decide the course of the rest of the series.

Spurs take a 3-2 lead back to San Antonio, where they are nearly unassailable, and the Pistons will have to win both games there in order to attain the championship. If the Spurs win even one time, it's all over.

I forgot that Game 5 was on until just as Overtime was starting... wish I'd have watched it all. But Overtime was still worth watching.

I'm predicting that the Spurs will win the series, probably 4-2 (i.e. will win in Game 6 on Tuesday). However, in Games 3 and 4 (both of which were in Detroit), the Pistons were the ones who were nearly unassailable. So, if the Spurs can win in Detroit, the Pistons can win in San Antonio.

Once.

Posted on 06-22-05 03:15 PM, in Pharmacists refuse to fill birth control, etc. Link
Well, the "Yes (force them); No (government intervention)" response is self-contradictory: if you force them, then the government is getting involved.

That said, I voted "Yes" on both. As you mentioned, pharmacists aren't there to decide what the patient should or should not receive: that decision has already been made by a doctor. The pharmacist's role is to carry out that decision. If a pharmacist is so presumptuous as to decide he/she isn't going to do his/her job, then he/she should be removed from that job. Plain and simple.

If you object to birth control, etc on moral grounds, that's fine: don't use birth control, then. But your right to practice your morals stops when it affects other peoples' rights to practice theirs.

In that case, anyone who is not male, white, with a goatee and long hair (brown, not blonde or red or black) is disqualified, assuming you go by the traditional (read: western) reckoning of how Jesus looked. If one considers just where he was born and lived, he probably looked not unlike modern Arabs (or something), and watching the American Church handling that should make for quite a spectacle.

But I digress. I think the "resemblance" to God
