Janus looks at Dameon blankly.

Janus: "So, what're you expecting to learn here? I can teach a lot of stuff. I can teach you how to play Half Life, or do calculus, or run drug busts, it's all pretty easy when you have as much time as I do. Ask me anything."

Janus takes his bag and opens a pouch, flips a switch and converts his bag into a hammer.

"You know, I don't like seeing weapons drawn on me, and I can guarantee if you use force on me I'll use force on you. But it's not my way to carry on a fight. You said something about learning?"

Shouldering his hammer, Janus leans against one of the torches and stares at Dameon, kicking the dust around on the ground, and looking generally bored.

Janus: "Magic? Whoa now there, I can't really do that. Not too well versed with it myself. Or rather, I'm amazingly well versed in it, but more often than not the verse finds itself muddled in my brain before reaching my lips! So if you don't mind, you might wanna ask someone else about this."

"Here's what I do know, however. Magic's a strange force. Some people consider it drawn from themselves, others draw it from the rest of the world. It's the manipulation of forces in the world to do one's bidding. This differs from Psionics, which draws from one's will to shape the world, rather than one's ability to use the world's power."

"This power, however, requires years of training to pull off. You can't just up and use magic one day. You have to really concentrate, you have to learn every little thing about the forces you manipulate, or else you're gonna expand your powers far out of control and you might end up hurting yourself."

Janus lets go of his hammer and watches it float before him.

"Take this bag, for example. It's enchanted, I place my magic within it. I don't bother manipulating the rest of the world, cause everything I need is stored in this artifact. You might say it's the source of my power. It's really not, but it's definitely much easier for me to channel my energy through it. I can use my brand of magic so long as I have something material to cling to."

"Those who don't use artifacts are real mages. They'll draw from the world around them and they'll do it with ease. They have years of training, they have the willpower, the intelligence, and the materials to do it with. You wanna learn a magic spell? Go to some of these guys, they're masters of their craft."

Janus looks over to his "pupil."

"Any other questions before you look for a new challenger?"

Hey I tried a standard, my friend tried to teach me a few times, she was pretty brave to do so.

It just won't work for me, I can't do stick, no matter how much I try. The second I let go of the clutch the car stalls, because I hit the gas at the wrong time, or I don't hit the gas enough, etc. I almost damaged my friend's car because I pressed the gas at the wrong time and spun her fan belt. I'm glad I didn't, though. I really wanna learn to drive a standard, too.

Fortunately (or unfortunately) for me, my classes all required me to have a graphing calculator. Those things are neat little devices, much smarter than I'll ever be, and totally obedient! It's like a dog that does your math homework.

My life was a living hell from first through eighth grade. I was an outcast, a reject, made fun of on a daily basis, and I actually had to see a counselor to deal with my social problems. I don't believe I existed before high school, really.

High school's been great so far though. Met a whole bunch of new people, turned my life around, and now I'm happy where I am. Doesn't mean I won't go forward, but I'm definitely not turning back, I've come a long way. Just one year left, though.

Being completely new to the board myself, I'd like to see a lot of the oldbies come back from being banned, just to have the experience. From what I read in the Display case it looks like things get really messed up around here sometimes, but if that pales in comparison to this Ninja AE fellow, then by all means, let the craziness shine through.

Posted on 07-26-04 09:36 AM, in Wisdom Vs. Reason: Janus Calls Schwa to Spar Under the Stars. Link
Janus sits serenely, staring at a huge, full moon, floating in the night sky on top of his satchel. The cool night air whirls around him, as he settles his mind, and prepares to broadcast his thoughts to a young wanderer among the imaginations of the universe.

Janus (thinking): "So Schwa, you base your faith on the side of Virtue, Respect, and Honor. For such a young man, you've shown great wisdom, wisdom that far surpasses your age. However, I wonder how your faith can stand against my tactical techniques? Is wisdom superior to reason? Show me, and I will show you in return where I place MY faith. Your strength certainly surpasses mine, but I still wish to try my luck. So, what will it be? Stay a friend I will never meet, or show me the power of good and become my compatriot simultaneously? Perhaps I can learn something of your power, or you of mine. The choice is yours..."

Janus continues floating, meditating upon his challenge. Was it a good idea? Should he really fight one such as Schwa? Neither good nor evil, Janus samples the best of both worlds. Aggression through passive activity, peace through violence, what does he fight for? He has seen more death in his days within the world of games than any human ever will, yet he fights nevertheless. Perhaps it is his nature.......

Anyhow, this is the second year in the row where I'm assigned a piece of feminist trash to trudge through. Last year was The Kitchen God's Wife by Amy Tan, and I didn't even pick it up. I simply accepted a poor grade. This year, it's The Awakening.

Now, let me make something clear: I have not read every book in the world. Heck, I haven't read one percent of them. But, judging solely on the merits of what I have seen, I think I can safely state that The Awakening is the worst book ever written.

Geez, I didn't even start The Awakening yet. I'm scared now. Oh, and for the record, I didn't think TKGW was all that bad (for a school assignment anyway), considering she's the most politically correct feminist teacher I've ever had..

Sure, there's a lot of work involved for an advanced class, but as far as I am concerned, her booty the payoff keeps me motivated...

Man, I missed this. The Awakening sucks ass, simply on the basis that the main character throws a perfectly good life into the gutter for some flighty fun and an affair with a hustler. It's not love, it's not happiness, it's lust and cheating, and Kate Chopin advocates dishonesty. That's just not right in my opinion, I have no problem with differing affection, but it really seemed to me that she just glorified having an affair. I found that really wrong, especially when you're cheating on someone who's done nothing wrong, like the husband in the story. And considering how the feminist movement is all about women's empowerment and being able to trust and accept them, I doubt a book where a woman steps outside the boundaries of marriage for some irresponsible fun is gonna help. However, my English teacher showed me that I was being single minded and that I should have concentrated more on the fact that she was able to step out in a society that kept women in. I said it happened over 100 years ago and that I didn't care now. I passed English with an A that quarter.

Summer Reading blows, I read way too much in my spare time to be bothered with reading some required book that I probably won't be tested on anyway.

Janus: "The great Schwa, at last. Well met, you truly are an interesting person, one I've heard much about."

"If you wish to know, my powers are drawn from a world that exists within the imaginations of the most powerful creative minds on the planet. I use these powers intelligently, in order to outwit and outclass my opponents. Thus, through reason and creativity do I gain my abilities. It is a combination of will from oneself, but it relies upon the will of others as well!"

Janus sinks to the ground, and gets off of his bag, looking up at Schwa.

"However, I have my qualms. In the world of my games, I see bloodshed for amusement. I believe I must fight, it is hardcoded into my head to do so, but I dislike violence with a passion, having seen the horrible effects a lust for it warrants upon humanity. So I fight for peace. I use the abilities that they would have for suffering in the name of pacifism. Hypocritical, it seems. I use violence to gain peace. Strange, but thus far it has worked."

Janus' bag floats before him, sharing a mental bond with Janus, and controlled by his thoughts. A foray into psychic ability, but a power even he has yet to understand.

"I'm also very fast, as you may see tonight. Shall we begin soon, or would you like to tell me a bit more about yourself?"

Janus sighs, effortlessly deflecting the blade with his hammer. It flies outward, sticking itself into one of the torch posts, quivering with the speed of its movement.

Janus: "Enchanted blades? What makes them any better than normal ones against a weapon such as mine? Well, it figures. Since you've attacked me, it appears as though I have no choice but to fight. But enough talk, have at him!"

Janus stands at the ready for his opponent's next attack. He grins, and eyes Dameon maliciously.

"I'm in the mood for a bit of fun tonight, so how about I make a bet with you? I won't attack you directly at all, but I bet I'll still defeat you, just with my words instead of with my hammer or my powers. It won't be much of a fight if you just attack me all the time, so why not make this a battle of wits as well as one of steel?"

Janus brings his hammer into a guard position, ready for almost anything.

"I guess what I'm trying to ask is, are you feeling lucky?"

Janus: "Ethereal attacks, eh? This WILL be interesting."

From the ground, Janus springs up at Schwa (assuming he's still in the air, if not, then springs forward at Schwa) with surprising speed, transforming his bag into a hammer in the process. As he reaches Schwa, he fires a backhanded horizontal blow, directed at Schwa's midsection in order to disrupt his charging!

"Let's see how your ethereal matches up to my material!"

There aren't many, a multiple is a number that can be divided by the given number, and the only one of that which yeilds a whole number is zero (0/2446880 = 0). Even one doesn't.

So for answers, I got zero.

Factors, however, are another story. You can divide this thing by one, two, four, five, and eight without getting a single remainder. But that's not multiples, so I'm just covering bases...

Taps him on the shoulder, grinning.

You know what I also thought was neat? Pandemonium from 8. Sure, it wasn't too strong, but I thought it was still excellent to watch it vaccum up my foes. Plus, it was one of the few actual wind attacks in the game.

Well while we're going for random interpretations, he might be asking what happens when we multiply the single digits of the number together:

2x4 = 8
2x6=12
2x8=16
2x0=0
4x6=24
4x8=32
4x0=0
6x8=48
6x0=0
8x0=0

That's some odd logic there.

There's also multiplying all the single digits of the number together, to get 2x4x4x6x8x8x0 = 0! Hehe.
