so your saying i have to find the exgfx### with the sprite i need to edit? and i need to overwrite it with my custom sprite? is that correct? and if so, will that overwrite that sprite for the entire game, cause I don't want that to happen.

yeah yeah, sorry i forgot. I don't have an edit option it seems, sorry I wrote that. But I've got another legitamit quesiton.

I have the goombas installed in SP2. Now the mushrooms, are in GFX00. I have custom mushrooms I'd like to install. Can I install this graphic in either SP1 3 or 4? Is that how you do that? Hope I'm on that right track.

I've received great help from everyone here, and you guys have explained everything crystal clear to me, and I thank you. But, I'm getting confused, and frustrated with the Super Bypass GFX and Map16. I need to know the following.

1. If you decided to do major graphic, & backround hacking for 1 level, will you ultimately have to do it for every level in the game? I ask because, when I save a Map16 file, a huge amount of levels are all screwed up. I have half the game customly designed (playing wise), and when I look at my levels, all the graphics are screwed up, and I have to draw, ot paste things together, which accumulates a large amount of time. "Like spikes, ground pieces, etc, etc.

2. Certain levels I have, I'd like them to look a certain way. But this all comes down to ExGFX files. All the ExGFX files I've obtained are from the ExGFX workshop. I've been using them strictly for FG3. All of the ExGFX files I've obtained include 2 Map16 files. I'm creating SMB1/SMB2 levels. Now, you all know the brown block that turns into coins if you hit a POW block, or when you hit a coin block right? Well, I want it to look like the original SMB1 block in my SMB1 level, and a custom desigined one for my SMB2 level. Now, when I paste over the brown block with the SMB1 original block, it appears in the level. But, when I go to take a look at my SMB2 level, the block is all garbage. BUT, why is it, when it's the original smw brown block, it can stay there for every level in the entire game???? This goes for every item, not just the block, it's happend to me with multiple items.

The reason I'm complaining, is I love doing this stuff. And I know people are able to do this with the greatest of ease. It's taking away from my level development. I know that when people load up a BG, it's pasted perfectly for them to work with. And that's another thing. BG, The only BG I could find from ExGFX Workshop, was that sky backround with the clouds, very awesome looking! But there's not other BG related downloads, they're all level related ExGFX. And, I have no idea how to create a custom map16, which I'd like to know how to do.

I'm a fast learner, but am getting frustrated with having to draw things over again, paste things over again, when I know there's a correct way of doing it. But I can't figure it out. I'd appreciate someones help in this, someone who is Extremely experienced, and doesn't mind taking the time, to show the ropes. my aim screen name is "infidel81" my email is "infidel80@hotmail.com" This is one of my favorite games of all time, and all the hacks I've seen here, are inspirational and amazing. For the map16 part. I have different ExGFX files on different map16 pages. I leave the first two pages alone. And sometimes, my hacked level will get screwed up if I change something in my other hacked level. From what I've seen, certain levels share the same map16 pages, even the ones before page 10. I' have the smb1 brown block. Now I tried telling it to act like the brown block from smw (132) but when i hit a coin block, or see one of the blocks I placed in the level, it does not look like the smb1 block, it still looks like the smw block.

what i also want to know. is when you hack a level. does your original smw levels backrounds and FG's get screwed up? if not, what steps am i missing? I do not put fg's on pages 1 or 2 of the map16.

I haven't edited the gfx## files, when I insert ExGFX files and want to insert them, they make my regular graphics screw up, which is normal I know, but it screwes them up for multiple levels for me.

And also, how can you use backround images from pages 12 on? Because the only way I can create backrounds, is when theyr'e located on page 10. My backround will only accept images from page 10. I have pages after page 10 with graphics, but if I want to use them, I have to place them on page 10. Am I still missing steps here?

Since I can't edit my posts yet, and I'm getting buried, here's my last post on the thread Need BG/FG Assistance, Experienced Questions Required. This reply I gave, was to a response that said not to paste anything, on pages 1&2, and page 10 of the 16x16 tile editor.....and my response was....

I'm sorry, I'm not quite catching that. Your saying I can copy and paste them to any page, which I understand. But, I've been told not to screw around with page 10. But that's the only place the backround editor will accept pieces of graphics from. If I try to use a piece of graphic from any other page, the backround editor says it will not accept it. But if it's on page 10, it will accept it. This is quite confusing, because If I put something there on page 10, what ever originality was there, will be effected not for that one level, but multiple others, which is what I don't want going on.

yes i ment 13-1f as any pages, that's what i ment. But if it's possible to use pages 10-11, without screwing up other levels that use those pages, I'd appreciate step by step on how to use page 11. I've also noticed that when you download from ExGFX, they give you screenshots of what your downloading, and I notice, it shows you FG and BG pictures, but I have problems loading the BG, maybe I'm doing that wrong? Cause what I do, is use the 16x16. goto page 3, load the FG, and save it with F9. Do I just goto page 11 and beyound, and do the same thing with the same file, and if so, will the backround image come up, instead of the FG image that appeared on page 3?

ok, I'm running into a new problem now

I'm starting a completely new game. I extracted the gfx from the game, then I hit the ExGFX extract button, and it said no graphics were found, and created the ExGFX folder. Great, everything is going fine. Now, I placed a ExGFX**bin in the ExGFX folder, I go to install it, and a graphic warning screen appears, saying it's in 3bpp format. I've never encountered this problem before! It even said that to me when I tried putting in the regular GFX back into the game. I remind you, this is a fresh new game, no hacks or anything have been done to it yet. How do I get by this warning? It even tells me I can proceed, if I like looking at garbage! I don't want to look at garbage. Please help!! Thank You!

nevermind about the 3bpp thing, i got it working

BUT!!! I still have a BG problem, and I'm really confused

I want to place the Ocean backround on page 12. Now before I did anything with tha backround, I set the backround editor itself, to take graphics from page 12 only. Then I went to my 16x16 tile editor, and went to page 12, which was completely blank. Ok, now, I went to the red mushroom, I went to BG1, I went to "ExGFX88" I clicked ok, and the Ocean backround appeared on page 12. BUT, just for curiousity, I scrolled down to look at pages 11 & 10. They were fucked up!!! I didn;t save anything. I had the Ocean graphic perfectly on page 12, but it totally screwed up pages 11 & 10. Is that normal?

Could I get the simple basic terms on how to create your own backround.

1. How
2. When you do, how do you get it to appear on your 16x16 tile editor, without any map16 files? and, how do you create your own map 16 files
3. Can you use .png .jpg still pictures to create a backround? I've been hearing you can take a screenshot, and make that as the backround. I tried loading the .png in YY-CHR, but it doesn't appear.

I would really like to know this, because I'm getting quite bored with the ExGFX workshop, and I'm very creative in the originality catagory, and would love to this! Thank You guys for your extensive help!!!!!

I'm sorry, but I must have missed it, I've searched, and can't find anything. I only ask questions, post questoins, if it'a absoultly legitamit. If you could be kind to point me in the right direction, I'm sure I can understand it, and go from there. And no offense was taken either. I can totally understand how you feel about us Noobs. Well, since I have no idea on how to do it, I did attempt to try somehting in my own crazy fashion. I took that font, placed it in my windows/fonts folder, then I opened notepad, opened gfx29.bin Then, I picked the mario world font. But when I did that, all these lines appeared from top to bottom, I made a backup copy of the graphic before I did this, incase of any screwups. so I saved it with the mario font. I inserted the graphic back into the rom, opened the overworld editor. And when I loaded up the title screen, all those lines I mentioned before, were all over the title screen. I even tried finding a way to ues YY-CHR with the font, but there's no option for it. And I've searched, and can't find exact detail on how to do this. Would someone be so kind to help? Just one more time on this issue? Thank You!! :-)

I was able to create my own font with the pain program. I saved it as a 256BMP.
But, I cant get it to appear in my YY-CHR. I can't find any "Import" option to open it in. I tried opening it anyways, but it was garbage. I ran through the different system types, to see if it would appear, but no luck. Also, the size of my image is 295x209, if that means anything. Hope you can help me again! :-)

Using YY-CHR, I was able to create an ExGFX file, of a backround from an NES game. I called it ExGFX96.bin It's 4kb. Now, I opened my rom, and inserted the ExGFX. I opened Super Bypass, and selected BG96. Now, I went to the level I wanted to have the backround in. Now, since there is no Map16 file for this, I went into my 8x8 tile editor. I went down one page, and at the top half, there was my backround, it was there perfectly!! Now, I opened my 16x16 tile editor, and tried pasting the pieces from the 8x8 to the 16x16, and it would not let me do so. I tried opening the backround editor itself, setting it to accept pieces from page 0x13. I then placed the 16x16 on page 0x13, then I tried again to copy and paste from 8x8 to 16x16, nothing. A while ago, I was able to copy and paste from 8x8 to 16x16, but with an SNES backround of Link To The Past. Am I missing a step? Thank You
