While I am twidling my thumbs waiting for GSD responses, I figured I would revisit an old friend, Final Fantasy VI.

Using GSD and WinMerge, I quickly found the test code for whether a character can use equipment. And it was pretty easy to disable.

You can grab the IPS (for a non-headered ROM) from http://geigercount.net/crypt/FFVI%20-%20Equip%20Anyone.ips

(edit)

Note: This does not affect the Skills menu or Relics, and the character will not be able to equip anything they normally would not.

Which ROM version is this for?

It should work for v1.0 and v1.1 of the NA release. I do not have a copy of the Japanese ROM on hand, so I cannot compare that one. The affected offset is $C31E6E:$C31E6F, both bytes NOPed out.

I happen to have a byte comparison for the Japanese version, so I'll see if those bytes are identical (edit to follow shortly).

EDIT: Oops, I don't have that file after all.

Hmm, this patch doesn't let me equip Gestahl. Is it something I'm doing wrong?

Considering that he can never be a party member throughout the course the of game, I am not surprised that he cannot be equipped.

Heh.. I can't quite picture equipping a person to a person, but seeing Terra grab Sabin and use him like a sword seems oddly humorous to me...

NOP is fun to play around with, I must say. I've only managed to NOP out a few routines myself, but in this instance, it's quite handy. For the longest time, the only way to get one of the non main playable characters (such as Leo) was to just copy and paste his graphics over Edgar or something. Now I can change the event code and just recruit Leo like normal (and still be able to equip/unequip him). And this makes Umaro much less useless.

I think Grinto probably used a cheat to have Gestahl in his party. FFIII has "actors" or sorts. You can have Kefka in your party too, it's just very glitchy. Why he would remain unequippable is beyond me.

I believe that Geshtal falls in the same category as the Ghosts and Scenario 'Choosin Mog - You can't even select Equip on them (Kefka, Leo, and Bigg/Wedge too?). This is probably controlled by another byte entirely.

Unless I misunderstand, I don't think Gestahl falls under the same category as the ghosts or Biggs and Wedge and the various Moogles (and the fake Mog). Gestahl never gets controlled by the player, inside battle or out, he falls under the "Just an NPC" category. He has no stats, starting equipment, or anything else related to being a playable character. It would be like trying to play as Cid or something, they were never meant to be controllable.

Whereas Umaro, Leo, Bannon, Wedge, Biggs and the Ghosts are. Each of these characters were meant to be partially controllable, and are mostly completely playable characters and can access the menu. Gestahl, like any other NPC doesn't have any sort of portrait.

FTR, this patch was tested with Bannon and Umaro. I know it works with at least them, and there is no reason it should not work with any other playable character.

I sort of know how to allow these characters to equip espers (I got one on Umaro), but I have yet to track down where exactly this data comes from (yes, this one is a data hack).

Cool, I'd like to tinker with this patch when it becomes available. Allowing the characters to equip Espers is a data hack, but equipping them is ASM hardcoded?

New release, v1.0:

http://geigercount.net/crypt/FFVI%20-%20Equip%20Anyone.7z

New
- Any recruitable character can access the relics menu or equip an Esper

The archive contains some documentation on this patch, but it is hardly extensive. At any rate, onto the new stuff.

Equipping relics is really not an issue for the 14 standard characters, but it is inaccessible for the non-standard characters. This was as simple to disable as the equipment menu was.

The skill menu was a bit different though. It actually checks the character's menu commands (which is why I thought this was going to be a data hack at first). But some code they put in to disable Gogo's Esper menu was easily changed to allow everyone to access that menu. I have checked, and the game will already apply Esper bonuses for Gogo and Umaro (Umaro normally has a speed of 33).

I am not sure why Umaro already knows every spell. My best guess is that he is getting the Gogo treatment and being given every spell the rest of the party knows.

The information you seek is included in the zip file along with the patch.

Same thing here as the other patch. I never mentioned this requires a non-headered ROM. Terribly sorry.

It's a fact. You can play as Cid. I downloaded a FFVII patch for this game. Nice job they did on the sprites.

Yes, but he's not a playable character in the original game, so technically that doesn't count. (Heh, by that logic, I could be a playable character)
