| If an IDE hard drive has no jumper to configure whether its a Master,slave, or uses cable select will windows or my BIOS detect it at all? EDIT: I think I may worded my question a bit cryptic, I originally just wanted to know if an HD would work at all without a jumper, since I came across one without a jumper. | I believe it defaults to auto, depending on the BIOS and the make. Though, I'm not sure, I always thought that there was a jumper on the back of most every hard drive. | |||

| all HDs should have jumpers. If the jumpers are not described on the HD (like they are now), then there are places on the internet that will tell you how to configure them. Just type in as much information as you can into google. When I get home later tonight, I'll update with the site that allowed me to get HD information for an archiac HD i had. | |||

| No it definitely had a jumper at one time. I have no idea what happened to it. I have a newer MOBO so I dont see why the BIOS wouldnt detect it. The jumper thing is the only problem I can think of. | |||

| because HDs need to know whether they are by themselves or if they have a companion. If the have a companion, the HD needs to know whether it is master or slave. The BIOS can detect it if you have set the HD to be cable select (which is also a jumper option) | |||

| yup...hopefully you put the jumper in the right place with the correct orientation (the jumper should be vertically oriented on the HD. Just try them one by one until you get some response. If you don't know already, there are three states the HD can be in: Master, Slave, Cable Select. Sometimes, if the drive it by itself, then you want to use the Master or Cable Select states. |
