I have to take my driving test soon. I am horribly late and it's pissing my parents off. The idea of it makes me nervous though, I don't know what to expect or anything. I also suck at lane changes. I was hoping that, for those of you who have gone through this process, if you could share your experience. I realize different areas have different requirements, but it will still be comforting to get a bit of an idea. |

Just relax and drive at speed limit. No quick acceleration nor hard breaking. Use your mirrors and signals (that is a plus). Practice turns and remember what to do when you approach a railroad crossing. If you can, check out the area around the DMV and become familar with it. They typically won't have you drive no more than 1 mile from the place. I did all that and I lost three points, all in one segment of backing up in a straight line... and remember, USE YOUR SIGNALS good luck on your test |

My driving test lasted less than 5 minutes, IIRC. The instructor basically had me drive around the block, and it was over before I knew it. Just make sure you're cautious and courteous, and above all, calm. You'll do fine. As I recall, my score was a 96 or 97, and the "mistake" I made was debatable, as I did exactly what the book said (I'm not supposed to pull into the farthest-right lane when taking a free right turn?!). |

When I did my driving test, I went through a red light. The guy still passed me though. I've never done it again. The driving test wasn't that bad, but then I did it with the same guy who taught me how to drive, so I didn't have the additional worry of having some examiner dude... |

DON'T PANICSeriously, don't. It's easier than you think. Think about it this way: just about everyone drives, and even now, people still can't drive. If it just so happens that you CAN drive, so much the better. Plus, you are allowed to screw up on one thing. I had a few tries on parallel parking. I nailed it on the last try. |

Heh, you think you are lazy, I'm 22 and I've only bothered to actually learning how to drive now. Heh. I have my theory test next Friday, and once I pass that, I can do my practical. Although, at the moment, if they ask me to do parallel parking, I'm fucked. I'm also not hot on reversing into a parking space, but thankfully, over here, they won't ask you to do both parallel parking and reversing into a parking space. The other two manoeuvres I'm not actually too bad at (3 point turn is piss easy, and I can usually do reversing round a corner).

Here, the driving test is manuverability and actual driving. Manuverability was alright, I didn't knock any cones over or anything, and the actual driving, I just went out, around the block and back. No biggie.

Here (well, the UK at least), you have to pass a theory test that consists of 36 questions, and a hazard perception test (simply, you watch a video and press the screen when a potential hazard appears, the quicker you press, the more points you get). Then you have to take the practical test, which consists of you driving around on actual roads. Also, you have to do two manoeurves to pass. There are four possible manoeuvres, three point turn, reverse around a corner, bay parking (reversing into a parking space), and parallel parking. Luckily, if you do one of the parking ones, you don't have to do the other. Oh, and did I mention that you also have to take driving lessons with some accredited place or something, and they are pretty expensive. So yeah, the whole thing can be very expensive. I've taken 22 lessons, and have spent |

I took driver's ed in the spring of 2003. It was the only class I have ever failed (luckily it wasn't part of the school's curriculum or counted into my average). I'm way too paranoid, and I can't think fast, so I always drove well below the speed limit, and would stop for several seconds at stop signs. I found it impossible to concentrate on everything at once. I had to not only watch the road, but also check the mirrors, check my speed, decide where I was going and how I was going to get there, etc. And this was only on deserted dirt roads out in the country. I never had to deal with parking, or traffic lights, or lots of other cars. So, I gave up.

C'd the class and passed the driving test on my first try. Almost fucked up at the very end though right as we were pulling into the lot. Learned how to drive stick when I was 17, had two cars go out on me, one end from a hood flying up in my face going downhill at 60 MPH, which was fun...and the rest is history. Personally, the test is nothing. |

Remember to actually look over your shoulder when you back up. I muffed that up, cause it was an abandoned side road, i pulled forward through it first, no one in site and no where for someone to come from, and had my eyes on the mirrors constantly, but they still got me. Also, drive the speed limit or 5 below, but not above. Also, just act like you're comfortable, that's what they're looking for. I passed with -13, the most you can miss, and my friends love how I drive; fast, reckless, but under control. Just do what you know, and definately drive around where your DMV is before you take the test, so you can see if there are any bizarre signs, lanes, etc.

Not that I'm offering anything new here, but the biggest tip I can give is to scout the area around the DMV. The area near the one I took the test changes speed limits several times, and there's a stop sign that I'm pretty sure is only there to make people fail their tests. After playing a lot of racing games, I did'nt do too bad on my driver's test. Plus my dad showed me how to drive when I was 13. Only thing that made me nervous was when the teacher would suddenly say, "STOP STOP STOP STOP STOP!!!!" and have me swerve into a gas station so he could buy some planter's nuts. A few quck things to do... -Signal -Front (look in your mirrors for an idea of what's going on) -Blindspot (turn your head and look, especially if you have a large vehicle. You NEVER know when someone will sneak up on you and I almost got hit by an SUV doing that.) |

Trust me, if you don't get some huge fat guy that smells, and asks to go by a gas station to pickup a Pepsi and Peanuts, and then adds the Peanuts to the Pepsi, creating the most disgusting smell you'd ever smell that'll clearly fill your nostrils every time that cap twists off, it should be easy. [Funny joke? No, true story. That was my teacher] Relax, drive, watch, listen. Drives Ed was seriously a cake walk for me. (edited by Xeogred on 02-11-05 11:23 PM) |

I will be taking mine soon, too. Blah. =( My brother pretty much told me everything said here, sounds like good advice. The only thing Im worried about is accelerating from a stop. Ive been using my mom's car to learn how to drive, and I still cannot master her gas pedal. Every time I start, it lurches forward AND I BARELY EVEN TOUCH IT. So I have to start moving over a time of about 10 seconds, barely moving until I have anough momentum to go without launching forward. Its retarded, I dont know what Im doing wrong. |

Be sure to eat alot of beans before the day your going to drive and before your going to drive. He/she will surely love doing the test with you. And well, I hadn't done my test yet so I can't speak for it. I could have done it earlier, but time restrictions hadn't made it possible until now. I'm at least training togetheter with dad now, I hope to get my license this year. |

Originally posted by Danielle you should master it because the car you test in is one you provide. as for starting from a stop, you should practice. I think you need a big parking lot to practice in so you don't have to worry about stopping in the middle of nowhere if possible, is there another car in the house you can use? like an older vehicle? if so, i'd probably recommend that to you. My car was about 10 years old so it's very difficult to get it to lurch forward like you have described. |
