I know after reading this intro, 90% of you will click the "Black" button because this has bugger all to do with American Sport.

The Six nations is contested by Scotland, Ireland, England, Wales, France and Italy every year. Here are the opening matches and my little review of them....

France 16 Scotland 9

France's dominance of the match was supposed to be a foregone conclusion as SOctland and Italy were supposed to be the teams jostling for last place, but Soctland drove the French hard, and I still believe they were robbed with some TERRIBLE reffing decisions. "The Try that never was" was blatantlyt inside the line and so Soctland should have caused the shock of the tournament, but it was never to be. The French REALLY need to up their game if they're in with a chance.

Wales - 11 England -9
Ahhhh..... I enjoyed typing that. Wales' victory over England at home is their first for 13 years and it was extremely sweet, with the game perched on a knife-edge. If I try and remain unbiased here though, neither team played near their best, the nerves were deffinately showing. I trhink England's arrogance they've gained since becoming World Champions showed through as they serverely underestimated Wales. Wales also should have capitalised on this and put more pointe between them, but instead they chose to give the millions of Welsh fans watching on TV near heart attacks as the game grew very tense, and was only won with a penalty kicked in the last minute by Gavin Henson... a star is born

Italy - 17 Ireland - 28
This scoreline doesn't reflect the fact that Ireland played REALLY badly, and Italy almost beat them, especially early on. Italy's tenacity at home was a scary thing to behold, especially as Wales is going to play them next. Ireland's kicking in particular was woeful, and this does not look like a team that can win the "grand Slam" at all (Grand Slam - An Unbeaten run of 5 matches, defeating everyone), as has been predicted by the press. Ireland need to seriously improve their game to avoid tough beatings from Scotland, Wales and France.

So the table so far is....

Team Points/Played/Won/Drawn/Lost/Points Difference
Ireland 2 1 1 0 0 11
France 2 1 1 0 0 7
Wales 2 1 1 0 0 2
England 0 1 0 0 1 -2
Scotland 0 1 0 0 1 -7
Italy 0 1 0 0 1 -11
Italy 0 1 0 0 1 -11

Ah, something that I follow with a passing interest.

Sounds like the tournament was just thrown upside down after day 1 - France and Ireland, both favorites, looking extremely terrible in their wins... Scotland and Italy, the two worst teams in the Six Nations, looking extremely impressive and unlucky... England losing... Wales winning...

England/France is the marquee game next week, right? Hm... If England loses, they're out and could end up stumbling to a 2-3 mark if the Irish pick up their game. Then again, the way France played judging from what I read... eeech.

And surprisingly, if Scotland and Italy were to play today given their form in the first round, it might end up being the match of the tournament.

Well 2 weeks on and look what's changed...

England have now lost all three of their opening matches, Wales and Ireland are the only Grand Slam contenders and Scotland may not me the walkover everyone says they are, however France may want to show Ireland a thing or 2
Current Standings

Team Points Score difference
Ireland 6 44
Wales 6 38
France 4 2
Scotland 2 -26
England 0 -9
Italy 0 -49

So is it safe to say that England's World Cup run was a bit of a fluke in retrospective?

Would be nice to see an Ireland/Wales final for the title and the Grand Slam... on the flip side, it might be nice to see England have to slip past (or stumble to) Italy.

I think Engliand's succes in the World Cup was down to one man..... Jonny WIlkinson, and with him injured, England have shown that they're a one man team.

Well here we are, the final weekend tomorrow.

If Wales beat Ireland, then the G**** S*** ( don;t want to jinx it), is ours, as is the champtionship and the triple crown. If they win the GS it'll be the first time ever in my lifetime. I was 9 when they last won the triple crown, and it's been 11 years since we last won the championship. To put things in perspective, 2 years ago we "won" the Wooden Spoon (that you get if every team beat you)

If Ireland beat Wales by more than 12 points, they steal the championship but don;t get the GS because they lost to France.

France need to hope that Wales get beat AND they oput a 52 point plus cushion against Italy to steal the championship.

No one cares what England and Scotland do (unless you're English and Scottish of course )

So, whatever happens it'll be a thrilling day of Rugby tomorrow!

And then Wilko had to go and get injured approximately once every month since.

France can get 52 against Italy but the odds of that aren't too great... so yeah. Ireland/Wales SHOULD be the decider.

I totally forgot to bump the thread and congratulate you on your team's success, Elmo. Quite an unexpected Six Nations win (*AND* Grand Slam), no?

I don't know if I'd go as far as to say you guys are serious contenders for the RWC at the moment, but perhaps... a semi-final spot at the least? I just hope Canada doesn't end up in your group again.
