Looks like FF is leading! I also use FF because of the tabbed browsing, built-in pop up blocker and theme/plug-in support. I prefer IE on older machines though, because it takes pretty long for me to load FF on my old P2 500 MHz.

I've used Firefox for a year, and then IE for six years before that. But when I was very young, I had been crawling way more than walking too. This doesn't prove anything. Let's list the features I want - not the features that Firefox has so that I can promote it, but the features I actually want: 1. Popup blocking 2. Tabbed browsing 3. The least amount of UI in my face possible 4. Ability to use Bookmarklets/Favelets (Bookmarks/Favorites with a javascript URL, designed to do things such as flip stylesheets on and off or open all images in a new window) 5. Competent CSS support 6. Competent HTML rendering 7. Competent Javascript debugging facilities 8. Site-specific preferences 9. Customizable key shortcuts 10. Type-ahead finding 11. Easily extensible Firefox comes with 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10 and 11 out of the box. Add 7 if you ticked the Web Developer Tools during setup. Firefox has 2 half-cooked, since I can't really control a lot of it. 9 is an extension, and 8 will be coming in or before 2.0. Mozilla and Netscape's both got pretty much the same score, but they're heavier, and they're heavier because it boasts several components that I either don't want to use or don't want forced upon me. I also think they are mind-boggingly ugly, but there are themes available, and furthermore it's not the point. IE has 1. It's got 3, 4, 6 and 11 half-cooked, because there's far more entries in the toolbar when you start it the first time as compared to Firefox (but it gets half a point for being customizable); it can only use Bookmarklets/Favelets that are 508 characters or shorter; its HTML renderer isn't half bad, but it lets thru too many edge cases in bad markup and doesn't offer competent CSS support anyway, so it's a lost cause; and there aren't many useful plugins. It can't do Tabbed browsing (2), even with plugins - Microsoft has said themselves that the architecture can't allow for it. 5 and 7 are vital for me as a web developer, so I can't use it as my main browser (yes, I'll still test in it, because I'd be dumb to neglect 90% of the users). 8, 9 and 10 are just way out as far as I can see. IE clones have all got more features, and some of them even better tabbed browsing preferences, which is why I preferred them for a while. But the renderer and the exploits still suck. Opera fails on the same ground as Mozilla. I don't want the kitchen sink. I like that it's customizable, but that's no excuse to cover the whole screen with toolbars and sidebars and poke a hole in the middle for the actual browser. Its rendering tries to be IE and Mozilla at the same time which is a general bitch to account for, and its Javascript support is behind the other browsers. I also don't want to pay for all that, but that's still irrelevant and just me being stingy. OmniWeb, my Mac browser, swipes all of 1 to 9, through and through, and the only reason I'm not zinging it thoroughly for 11 is because I can't for the life of me figure out what should be in there that isn't already in, except for 10, which isn't in, and yes that sucks. |

I use a variety of browsers, but mostly Firefox. I also use Safari, Camino and Opera from time to time. I also use Internet Explorer. However, I am not fond of it. I have to admit that Firefox, Safari, Camino and Opera spoil the user compared to IE in terms of features and customisability. After using any of them, it becomes hard to go back to IE, just cause you've gotten so used to a lot of the nice, little things that the alternate browsers offer. There's also the security aspect. Let's face it, IE is the most widely exploited browser out there. This is pretty much what you have to expect from a Microsoft Product (ie, not well liked amongst many people) with a huge market share. But it does make IE usage a fairly sucky experience unless you bolster IE's security with other utilities.... (or only go to websites you know you can trust) So, now I only use IE in cases when I need ActiveX, on trusted sites. That means -- only for Windows Update, and the specialised internal and external sites used for my workplace. Alternate browsers for everything else. As for whether people should use one browser or not over another -- use whatever is best for you. But don't bash anything else unless you've tried it for a month (good amount of time to really get to know something, not too short, not too long) and then found you don't like it. IE, because I'm used to it and it doens't given me any problems. I never get any spam/pop-ups from it either. I have Firefox on the other compy, but I honestly do not like the set up. |

I'm using Firefox for security, pop up and adblocking. I don't care much for styles and skins, and whatever other shit there is. Although, the tabbed browsing is quite neat, though. (edited by Rad King Liz on 02-07-05 04:23 PM) |

Opera/IE. I ran my own experiment using Firefox (back in the days when Jesper was offering a free Gmail invite for a week using Firefox, in a wild attempt to get new Fire-Fanboys out there) and I hated it much. Not only did a new version come out THE VERY NEXT DAY (Meaning that my two-hour-download of the piece of shit was worthless) but it was slower than shet. The toolbars aren't able to be moved at all, the menus sucked, and the options were few. It was horribly slow, rendered pages slower than IE (and downloaded them slower, as well) and the Download Manager was slower than shit thanks to overuse of flashy gpraphics. The "tabbed browsing" is a joke. If you want to see how real tabs are done, use Opera. It's been doing them for a lot longer than Firefox, that's for sure. Firefox loaded slowly, as well. The lack of being able to continue from last time if it crashed wasn't too terribly fun, since it crashed quite often. |

Firefox/IE although I use Firefox mostly at home. I had to force myself to get rid of the IE shortcut in my Quick Launch toolbar to use Firefox. I still I use IE because at work we have Netscape as the alternative and there are certain games that use ActiveX to get started The game is fun so it isn't a big deal. |

I use IE. Partially because if I were to install anything else on these computers, my mother and grandmother would freak out. But also because IE displays any page I go to correctly, save for a few layouts here, and it has all the features that I need. I don't need customizable keyboard shortcuts, I don't need popup blocking since none of the sites I go to have popups anyway; even if they did, I could just DOWNLOAD A SEPERATE POPUP BLOCKER! That's right, it doesn't have to be built into your browser! I'm just tired of people bashing Internet Explorer. It works. It may not have any fancy special features that aren't needed anyway, it may not have a built in popup blocker, and it may not have the greatest security. But it works, and if you run a spyware/virus sweep periodically (we run them weekly, on Friday evenings) you don't have much to worry about. |

I started using Firebird almost a year ago, and now I use Firefox here at home for most of my web browsing. I'll still use Internet Explorer in the case of a page not loading properly in Firefox, or similar, but primarily, Firefox works for me, and everyone else that uses this computer uses it as well

I checked the "other" option. I used to use Mac IE for-fucking-ever. You cannot imagine how much worse this is than Windows IE until you live the adventure. However, I finally upgraded my OS, so now I use Safari. I'm also able to use Firefox now, but I haven't felt like trying it. This works just fine for me. |

Originally posted by Neko-ArekusuchanOkay, just checking here. Your ranting enables me to call you "an Opera fanboy", Opera "a slow piece of shit", "a UI nightmare", "overkill" and "failing to be a good kitchensink" and feel good about it, basking in the fact that single person's bad experiences define absolute truth and must be yelled aloud. Furthermore, the default Opera theme uses more special effects than Firefox's download manager, and the Gmail account wouldn't have run if you hadn't used the latest beta as of back then, because it used Javascript objects that have only been available in IE and Mozilla for several years. Just checking. If I can be as loudmouth and rampant about this as you, that'd be swell too. Not. Edit: I'm also confounded by your use of the word 'fanboy'. I just spent a post detailing what I wanted in a browser and why Firefox and OmniWeb fit my specific bill and other browsers didn't. A fanboy is someone whose love for a product is based on irrational reasoning; my love for my browsers are caused by the fact that they have the features I want (or can be upgraded to), and implement them well. We're fine with you using Opera. I - as a board developer - am a bit annoyed at times because its Javascript support sucks, but no more annoyed that I am with IE's CSS support sucking. If it works for you, it works for you. Give up the "the board hates me and you're all morons" attitude for once. I'm sick of it. (edited by Jesper on 02-07-05 11:52 PM) |
