| Well, last week's talks were viewed as good by the NHL and as a waste of time by the NHLPA. Now it's been reported that, contrary to what some might have believed, they will be having another meeting on Wednesday in Toronto. The NHL apparently has a proposal in the wings which "addresses" some of the player's concerns, but still has cost certainty. The meetings will decide whether or not the league's made enough concessions. So... what's going to happen. Are we going to see a deal this week, one just in time to save the season, one before next season or are we screwed when it comes to hockey? I'm HOPING that they reach a deal, although I can't see it happening this week. Even if the new proposal is intriguing, the PA still has to talk with its members, possibly negotiate a few key points... I think if the proposal has enough bite to it, they'll talk. And if they aren't talking by Monday at the latest, the season's down the tubes I fear. Key note: None of the "big 4" sports leagues in North America has ever cancelled a season due to a work stoppage. |

| Just one tiny problem: Owners: "We want a salary cap!" Players: "We don't, but we'll give you back 24% of our salary!" "Owners: "We want a salary cap!" Players: "..." Owners: "We want a salary cap!" The union leader and the commish have absolutely nothing invested in this. They both seem like corrupted fuckheads. The players are losing money, and the owners are losing money. Because of this lockout, the NHL will never be the same again. It's been on a downward spiral already, there's no TV contract, NASCAR has passed them in ratings. I mean, come on. It needs to find the glory it once had, until then, hockey will be a lost memory. I hope for that slim chance that there might yet be a season, but I'm starting to doubt it more and more as the days pass. The NHL has many problems right now, and part of it is that it seems to have lost it's general appeal. I don't find myself drawn to hockey as I did 6 years ago. I don't know why either, the drive is gone. Part of the problem is, not that many people really miss the sport, except for the die hards, the players, and the owners. This may as well be the NHL's last chance to revive the sport, if it fails here...then it may be dead. |

| I think the conversation is more like this: Owners: We want a salary cap? Players: No, how about a luxury tax? Owners: No, a salary cap? Players: No, a luxury tax? ... The irony above is they are both the exact same thing--it's just that either side doesn't want it to effect them... But anyways, this season is a lost cause and I'm thinking next season is a lost cause as well. |

I know that this season is already a lost cause, and I have a very bad feeling that if things are not worked out soon, that it'll be the end of hockey. Its a shame too, because I was really starting to get into it (about two years ago). Not only that, but what about all those little league kids who wish to be an all-star hockey player one day? What kind of example is this?  Hopefully, by some strange chance, that hockey will return in the future, by those kids of today who just want to play. | Shrug, doesn't really phaze me either way. They just never reached enough homes here in the US. The way I see it is this: a veryy greedy union full of players that just want to play, and a bunch of greedy owners. |

| I think I'll tune into tonight's ESPN radio to try and ketchup, but they had the VP of the players union on, and he seemed dead adamant on no salary cap...but all of his points were bad. Like for example a hockey team can't do well if there was a cap, because they need 3 good lines or what have you. But then the radio guy came back and said that a football team needs 53 players to make it work, and they havea cap. |

| A lot of football players only make minimum wage though. It's not so in hockey with the exception of some players and many minor-league guys. Only 7 or 8 teams would be in trouble with a $38 million cap, the others fit into it from what I've seen. You might be able to reduce that number to 4 or 5 by adding a luxury tax to said cap. |

| True but the proportion of guys making minimum wage (NOT the number, the proportion) is higher in the NFL than the NHL, I would tend to believe. Meetings finished today, no news from either side, rumor has it the next meeting is tomorrow in New York. |

| Barring a small miracle, the NHL is expected to announce the cancellation of the season Friday. Now I will be depressed, because the chase for Lord Stanley's Cup is by and large one of the greatest playoff races of all time. All I can say is: Good fucking job, players and owners, you really fucked up and alienated every fan of hockey. |

| the NHL will recover from this if it is ever settled)--after all, baseball (i believe) as recovered most of what it had when the strike came in 1994 (although the steroid thing is threatening it) Somebody is going to give in...it is just a matter of when. |

| I've heard of Sidney Crosby simiply because I play a lot of Eastside Hockey Manager. He's the #1 overall draft pick in the 2005 entry draft. And it's pretty much official that the season's going to be cancelled now. As usual, they've shown no further progress in the CBA talks and got nothing cracking in terms of agreement. Shocking, but of course, I was expecting no less out of the latest CBA talks. Safe to say that there's not going to be any NHL hockey any time soon. (edited by Seph2k4 on 02-06-05 11:09 PM) |
