Well, that would be part of the problem then . . . Arena doesn't use the openning story. The intro is not used at all. Arena doesn't have Samus's ship fly to the Space Station. The "first" room of the space station is severely messed up, but is not used anywhere in the hack.

Okay... I have a really strange problem with both Arena v.7 and v.4 (the old one linked to on the ZD site). I start the game, get the Bombs/Morphball, and then try to go through the door on the right only to have the game freeze. I've been using ZSNES 1.42. Any ideas why it freezes?

(I had the same problem on the "Reverse" hack on that one website in the Maridia miniboss (Botwoon?) room, both doors.)

EDIT: 10000th post in this forum?

Are you using a clean rom? I know you are, but I had to ask. You're the first person that's mentioned these problems . . . By the fact that you say you have a problem after getting the morph/bomb, I'm assuming you're no longer freezing at the non-existing intro

Do you have any cheat codes turned on?

(Check the names, Jathys. I never had the problem with the intro, that was someone else.)

Nevertheless... Clean ROM (downloaded another copy just in case), and no codes. It does work in SNES9X for some reason, though... Although the screen tends to go black after going through doors, which can be fixed by pausing and unpausing.

Parasyte, I just played Orn for quite a while -- it's a fantastic game, and it's hard to believe that one person did it all himself. Is there a way to "win", or do you just explore Brinstar to your heart's content? I've got four energy tanks, with the one on the ceiling at the beginning of the game seemingly unobtainable, unless there's a high jump boot somewhere. (Or an ice beam, though the creator says there isn't one.)

Edit: Whoops, forgot about wall jumping! Of course that tank is obtainable!

In Orn... You just explore as long as you want. No boss or anything, but it's still a cool demo.

I got Arena working... Don't know what was wrong, but downloading the most recent ZSNES again fixed it. (There's something wrong with the room after the giant Metroid one, but I'll guess that'd be fixed in the next release, I hope).

Skreename, I now have six energy tanks and seem to have explored everything. A "win condition" would have been nice.

I'm thinking about putting a good chunk of time into making a Metroid-style game with SMILE. Is there any way to change the palettes easily?

Well, Orn is just a tech demo, of sorts. The author only did that much for a school project. On the website, he explains that he has no intention of developing it further. It could have been a really nice clone, though.

Palettes are always easy to change. Even if everything in the game is compressed, it's unlikely that palettes are. Of course, if the palettes are compressed, a palette editor should be an obvious choice for a tool in an editor.

I can't seem to find any palette-editing features in SMILE, and I want to add a Martian-style purplish sky and rust-red ground. Why? Here's my hack idea:

This is the story of humans' first interaction with the space pirates. The setting is the early 2200s, just as humans are branching out into the universe. Bases have been built on Mars as humans attempt to terraform the planet (think Kim Stanlety Robinson here). The pirates, having noticed humans nascent desire to expand beyond Earth, send a small force to take over the Martian base. We, of course, do what any video-game-oriented people would do -- send a single, souped-up armed-to-the-teeth powerhouse to take down those nasty pirates all alone.

Then maybe we could have a scenario in which the pirates have built their own Martian base in secret, in preparation for more devious operations against the Terrans, and so the game will feature human-built, space-station-esque areas, and then alien environments full of evil nasty baddies that you get to shoot at. Should be fun.
