I know people have made Super Metroid games of their own, which I guess they may of hacked. Umm, I know a game called Metroid Prime 2D is in progress, but I've never seen an actual patch for the Super Metroid Rom. Here is a link to the Metroid Prime 2D -

My god I love it already.

Let's just hope they finish it.

Edit: Proper Link: MP2D

Although, does this really qualify as a rom hack? I'm sure it's not a SM hack ...

It doesn't look like a hack at all. It seems to be a homemade game.

Sorry, about link. Umm, I never said it was hack. It is a home made game or so I bleleive. It should be awesome though, or by the looks of it.

jman2050, Jathys (creator of SMILE), and myself are all actively working on hacks, there are a few others, but I can't think of the names at the moment.

If SMILE would quit coming out with new features, I'd already be done by now .
Super Metroid-R is mine, which is a "revisit'" of sorts back to the original (which original is up to you ). I keep the same elements as the original with mainly the areas changed, not much with door pointers or pointers peroid.

Projected date for my release is Summer 2005, possibly sooner.

Jathys' hack is Arena (a demo as of now, but it's leading the way to new ideas) is available at his website. The creator probably knows the most about how to use the editor until those help files are created .

jman2050's (further down the page) is the most innovative one of all right now by wiping the rom clean except for the engine and creating his own enemies and items.

A few japanese hacks are available here. But there only 3 on there.

No complete hacks are out as far as I know, but maybe one of the japanese hacks are close to being finished. I don't know if they are demos or complete hacks.

While on the subject of Metroid-based homebrews, I suggest everyone check out the Orn demo. Orn is a very nice Metroid clone for GBA. It has some amuzing bugs, and it's far from complete, but I found it a very enjoyable little demo. It also has excellent graphics and music.

Orm is beautiful. Thanks, Parasyte, for introducing that site -- I'm going to download it!

It looks much better than the original, and with the 3-D-esque backgrounds, really gives a feeling of depth to Zebes. If it plays half as well as Zero Mission... well, this guy whould seriously consider moving forward with more development!

I have done a bunch of *mini* hacks. Arena is, by far, the largest hack I've done . . . Arena is only a "testing ground" for SMILE and ASM though. I think I'm about halfway done with it.

I have at least 2 *full* hacks planned in the future . . . One so grand that I'll probably never get to the 2nd one. I just hope I get enough people to help with the project (which will officially be started in March).

Unfortunately, Arena didn't work for me. I could hear the music, and when I selected a save state, it just froze. I loaded it up again and it didn't even let me get to the save file select screen

As has been mentioned, I'm working on one, a very extensive one at that. If you look at the topics in this forum, one should have a movie demonstrating a prototype of one of the new bosses I'm going to program in. When will it be done? Who knows, depends on how many obstacles get in the way...

Was the savestate made in Arena? If not, then you're probably loading into data that no longer exists or has been changed. Arena should not be loaded from savestates made in non-hacked roms, just as you wouldn't load a savestate for ChronoTrigger while playing SuperMario.

As for the problem getting to the save file select screen . . . This one confuses me. Do you have your emulator set to automatically load the most recently used savestate? If so, that's the problem. If not, I haven't got a clue.

Ah crap! Sorry, I said it wrong... Uhh, you know how just after the title screen it goes to the screen where you select your save file, dele, copy and whatnot? Yeah!
I just tried it again. All the graphics are stuffed up, as once you get past the map screen, it freezes.

Hmmm... There was a version of Arena that did that, but it wasn't ever released (I don't think). You are using arena7, right? If not, test out:
http://jathys.zophar.net/files/arena7.ips

X-ray crashes the landing zone, but other than that it should work fine.

BTW- what emulator are you using?

Nope, still doesn't work. I usually use Snes9x v1.42, but just now I tried it in ZSNESW V1.35, and still did the same thing. Maybe I have the wrong ROM. Like the wrong version. I know I had that kinda problem when I tried to play a Super Mario World hack.

What version of the Super Metroid ROM do I need? I have a good site I go to, so it shouldn't be a problem for me to find it. Sorry for being a pain, and your help is greatly appreciated.

Super Metroid (JU) [!] is one I patched Arena to, and it worked. There's also a program on Ultima's old site that can work out what ROM you have.

*Cries* Okay, this is what's happening. (Annoying, I know)
I downloaded Super Metroid (JU) [t1], out of a choice of either that or [t2], and it starts up perfect. However, everything goes well untill the opening story is at it's end and you see Samus's ship fly to the Space Station, after that, nothing.
I'm not doing anything wrong, am I?
I've noticed that it does tend to boggle everything up when I play it in 'Turbo Mode' on Snes9x, but trying it in ZSNESW works fine... Besides that one Space Station stuff up...

*Note: I would use more emtional emoticons, but the ones I've memorized from another board are of no use here, and I couldn't be bothered going to the FAQ all the time. =P*

[t1] and [t2] are translation patches. Chances are, the Arena patch will not work on those. You need the original, unmodified ROM, denoted with [!].

You sure your rom is headered? It won't work if it isn't. CHeck the file size of your rom. If it is 3,146,240 bytes, it is the right one. If it isn't, go into a hex editor and add 512 ($200) bytes to the start of the rom, then patch it.
