I released this demo a few days ago at TEK, & I forgot to release it here! Well, this is my last smb1 hack I'm working on at the moment, look at the Zombie sprite that's replaced with Goomba, does anyone know from which game that Zombie sprite is from? Here's the eye candy...

And here's the patch.

Enjoy.

Well, right off the bat I want to say thank for for making me finally find an SMB1 ROM that would actually work when I applied IPS patches to various copies of it. Up 'till now the one I had would only work while playing the original game

That aside, the first thing I noticed is the slightly different sounding music. It's not enough to make the music sound new, but at the same time, it's a nice difference. Good work there I'll play this demo more after I write this post, but for now I'll comment on the screenshots.

I like the idea of replacing the Piranha Plant with a Panzer (I believe that's what it's called). What would be really neat to see is if you were able to make it shoot out fireballs, like some of them do in SMB3. There's not much to comment on in the second picture, aside from the new graphics, but they do look good. The only thing that really caught my attention in the third shot was what used to be the question mark blocks. I can't place exactly what game I saw it in, but I recognize that face. The fourth one looks nice as well, but I wonder if it would be possible to, instead of having the Boos shoot fire like Bowser did, make them send out copies of themselves I just thought of that because it seems kind of odd to see a Boo spitting fire Like the second one, there's not much to say about the fifth screenshot, besides the fact that it looks good

I don't know what game the Zombie sprites come from though

Overall, this is looking (and sounding) quite promising. Keep up the good work

Sorry about that, I was in a hurry when I posted this. I had to go to sleep to get up early in the morning to take care of some business.

For everyone else, Use the SMB ROM with the title screen.

Thanks for the feedback nonetheless, I can change the fire into something else I found in a rom hack, the (?) blocks are from another smb1 hack from Japan I found, I'm making this with a touch of Japanese flavor. Your right about the plant it's a Panzer. I want to make the ghosts in the castle at the end to move really fast. I need to find the offset for Bowser. I'm glad that you like the screenshots, I felt kinda wierd when I released this demo cause I never did it before. I usually just finish the game & release it.

And thanks again for the feedback.

It's not a bad thing. I meant that the SMB1 ROM I had before only worked if you were playing the original game, and not if you made a copy and applied an IPS patch to it. This is essentially the same thing I was having a problem with when I made my post in the 'Hammer Mario' thread that's down a bit.

Sooner or later I was going to have to find an SMB1 ROM that would work when patched, and this demo looked interesting enough that I looked for, and found one

I'm not mad at you or anything, so hopefully that clears up any confusion

Kernel Software has a utility called "SMB Remodeler" that changes a lot of stuff like that in SMB1. Enemy speeds, Mario speed, palettes, etc.

It's all in Japanese though. I have a "translation" text file where I figured out most of the stuff in version 1.40, but the new version 2.00 that just came out rearranges all the options and stuff and adds a lot of new ones, and I haven't had time to go through them all again...

So you'll have to fish around in the program. I can tell you, though, I remember there being 3 values for Bowser's speed: two for left/right speeds when he faces left and uses his fire/hammers, and a third for when he faces right and quickly chases you to the axe...

EDIT: D'oh, forgot the feedback.

This is a pretty good hack.
It's a bit hard, but nothing I really couldn't manage. (Though I did play to 4-3, and let's just say I foresee some nice difficulty when you get to hacking the remainder of the levels...heh.)
The graphics are great too, and I like the dark/ghost theme (been a while since I saw a ghost-themed hack).
I have issues with those coin blocks positioned right over the pits though, as they seem like a bit cheap way to just kill the player ...after the first one, I found myself checking every jump from then on for fear of "BDING!" followed by a fall into the abyss...

Karadur It's cool buddy, I'm glad you liked the demo.

4matsy Thanks for the SMB Remodeler. This'll be very useful for me, you rock! There was a hack from Japan that really caught my eye with nifty changes to them. The name is Mario Panic 4 by Mikachu.

When I hack more levels I'll PM you guys if you would like to beta test my hack.

Googie, did the Japanese hacker say what that character was on the blocks? It looks like Sanskrit.

That looks nice Googie. I can't get on TEK right now due to filters at work. I hope they take them down soon so I can go back on. THe screenshots look nice. I am sorry I can't play any hacks right now. As soon as I get home I got a lot of romhacks to play. Good job Googie.

Heian-794 I got that character from the game Demon Sword. When you fight the 2nd Boss it's on the wall inside a house. And I got the ground graphic from Samurai Pizza Cats.

solid-tbone I'm glad you like screen bro, I hope they take down the filters too. My cousin in The Bronx went through the same thing because she would talk in chat rooms while at work. I'm gonna do my best with this hack, since it'll be my last smb1 hack.

Thanks fellas for giving me the inspiration to finish this hack. You guys won't be dissapointed.

Wow Googie, this demo is pretty good. I can tell that you took your'e time to make the levels even if it is a small demo, nice job. I cannot wait for the final product. Um, is this going to be a prequel to DahrkDaiz's SMB3 DX? The only reason I'm asking is that he is using the Luigi sprite from SMAS SMB3 & your using the Luigi sprite from SMAS SMB.

Nice! It's hacks like these that make me wonder why Nintendo always went with such plain graphics, when they can fit so much better into the same space.

Kasper Thanks bro, I'm glad you enjoyed the demo. About your'e question about my hack being a prequel to SMB3 DX cause DD & myself are using Luigi's sprites from SMAS, I never really thought about it. But, I guess that'll be kinda cool.

HyperHacker Thank you HH, I'm glad you like the graphics. I think that Nintendo would use plain graphics for SMB is because in the 80's they weren't thinking about reselling the same game back then.

Well, in case anyone was wondering where I got the Zombie sprite from, it was from Capcom's Gargoyle's Quest II The Demon Darkness.

Artists in 1985 were just getting used to the hardware they had to work with. By the early 90's, they had a nice feel for it, as can be seen in games like Batman: Return of the Joker and Mega Man 6.

Kasper Thanks Kasper for the encouragement.

Parasyte Yes, Batman: Return of The Joker & MM6 were really hot games in the 90's. Between the Nes & Genesis version of Batman: Return of The Joker, theres just something that make the Nes version better than the Genesis version. But that's just me.
