http://mike.warpedbelief.com/crap/chicago.ttf I found it on one of my school's computers. It seems to work fine on Windows 9x/Me, but not Windows 2000/XP. I have no idea how or why... Is any one here good enough to hack it into a version usable for Windows 2000/XP? Edit: This font works under X on GNU/Linux... perhaps I can recompile it with FontForge. Edit2: FontForge doesn't even recognise it. Damn. (edited by FreeDOS on 01-11-05 07:45 PM) (edited by FreeDOS on 01-11-05 08:01 PM) |

It does on Windows 95, 98, and Me. To them, it's a valid font file. And as I said, it also works under X11 on GNU/Linux. There must be something about it that wasn't implemented in Win 2000/XP. Gah. That's annoying, It's the only Chicago clone that I found that works... and I searched Google for "chicago font" and the first result seems to be that one. |

Ooh, that's a nice Chicago clone. Looks pixel-perfect at 9pt... Er, the only thing I noticed is that there's no copyright info in the file, which all my other fonts do have. Maybe that has something to do with it? [EDIT] Never mind, there is copyright info in the file (1990-1991 Apple Computer Inc.--I don't think this is a clone!), but I guess it's not where Windows expects to find it. Perhaps this is an older/different TrueType version that Win2K and XP don't support? (edited by BMF54123 on 01-12-05 05:29 AM) |

Ah... that makes more sense now. Apple did develop the TrueType system in Windows 3.1, and 95, 98, ane Me are based on 3.1... So, if this is indeed from an Apple computer, that may explain it. I found a program called TransType that will hopefully convert it into a format Win2000/XP can use... I'm at school right now, and using Win98. So, I have to wait a few hours to see if it can work. Edit: Nope. Didn't work. (edited by FreeDOS on 01-12-05 02:23 PM) |

This could very well be a TrueType font pulled straight from a Mac. The fact that Windows reads the wrong name for the font (the name is stored in multiple languages within the file) seems to support this, as both OSes probably handle language settings differently. 1990-1991 indicates that it's a very old font, so it's possible the format was changed slightly, and Microsoft overlooked that fact while building 2000/XP's font system... (It's also possible that the newer OSes reject fonts intended for use on an Apple, but that's a little more far-fetched, I think.) |

I'm going more towards the theory that Apple's TrueType format was never implemented into Windows NT... It's also possible MS rejects Apple fonts. Microsoft does have a bad history of making non-Microsoft products non-functional with MS products. |
