Very cool hack.

Level three was a real pisser, but I finally got it! And the first time I tried, I actually did manage to get that "phantom" coin that's half off the screen, but only the first time -- weird.

I loved it, and I want more.

It's almost, addicting.

Great job, the levels were nice too.

I'm really glad you like it. Thank you.

It might take 5 or 6 weeks though to have a full demo ready. I don't really even want to say that, because I'm not sure. I work a lot, and only hack occassionally when I have free time. I have to work on the rest of the levels, do more graphics, add some more features, polish the whole thing up, have it tested by a few people. We'll see.

I just got done adding a new feature. This is my first ASM hack done with FCEUXD.

Lives were taken out of the game, when making the coin counter reset. Thats because the game will be hard.

So, what I did with the green mushroom, is that if you find one, and get it, it will make the music change! Actually, it will cycle through various songs (see SMB3 notes if you are curious). I wanted to make it a CD, but then the red mushroom would look like one (same graphics, different palette). I could use the star, but I might still want to have the star in the game. We'll see.

But yeah, tired of listening to that only stage music? Find a green mushroom, and listen to a vary of songs!

O... M... G!!! This hack looks AMAZING! I really like the concept of timed coin-finding. But a small Idea would be to maybe (if possible) make it so blocks regain their contents after a bit? I mean if you need a feather to get a coin and you used up all the blocks in the level and aren't raccoon mario, then you lose. But anyway This hack looks GREAT and I will wait patiently for the public demo.

I think doing something like that could be avoided by always having a number of 'blocks' of coins at the end. By blocks, I mean a 4x4 block of coins, or a similar size. Most levels in the demo do have that sort of thing near the end right now That would also put a big hole in the game, as you'd be able to get all the coins possible out of a block, wait for it to recharge, and go at it again. If it's possible to limit the number of times that it recharges though, it could be a good idea.

Your post made me think of something else though. Before Luigi's Red Coin Quest was cancelled, you were able to go back into the levels and play them again, like you can in Super Mario World, for example. That would be cool to see in this hack, if you have the knowledge to know how to do so. One thing I'd like about it is the ability to be able to try to beat the level as fast as possible, like a speed run sort of thing.

Nice idea, adding an item that changes the music, Rockman It'll be a suprise for the person / people that don't read this thread, and just play the game when a full version comes out. You'd hit a block, and think you're lucky because you found a 1-Up. Go to get it, and wonder why the music changed

Played the first two stages; how about these ideas?

* Coin-collecting is the name of the game, so how about a more distinctive sound when you get a coin?

* How about having the music speed up (last-100-seconds style) when you've got 90 or 95 (or 99) coins?

* This might be too difficult, but how about recording the top ten times on each stage, F-Zero style?

* Since you don't lose lives for running out of time, shouldn't the default number of Marios be 1? Or better yet, take that off the screen and insert the player's previous best time!

* And yeah, recharge-able mushroom and leaf blocks would be a big help. Maybe a stash of them at each end of the stage would be good -- you'd have to trek all the way to one side of the level if you ran out of power-ups in mid-stage, but if they're all in once place you don't have people taking them all at once. I found "power-up management" to be completely different in this game -- normally, if you already had a leaf and saw another one, you'd just grab it and get 1000 points, but now, you have to leave it intact for the next time one of the bad guys hits you. Different dynamic, and I like it.

Okay, um, this is going to sound really weird, but I had a dream that I was playing this game. It was like a vertical chamber with ropes and pointy things and the boss was a giant armadillo-ish Goomba...
Right, well, the rounded style is cool, but I don't really like the blocks' shading. Nice work, Rockman!

You could also try adding an item-reserve system like in SMW...

Just a thought, how about have the music do something useful? Since you already have a way to change it...maybe, have... blocks that give out diff power suits based on the current music? so you might actually have to find a one up to beat get the correct suit, to get the coins, to win the level.

Update on the hack:

I've been messing around with the graphics, started working on more levels, and I have been having a few problems.

I had to take the "music mushroom" out temporarily, because it was causing the score to go up too high. Its probably nothing I can't fix. The code I used was probably wrong.

I could definately use some tips on graphics. I don't know if I like the clouds that you see in Level 1.

These are just a couple of pics I took 2 days ago. I redesigned the dungeon.

btw, its not Luigi. I'm just messing with Mario's colors.

Wow, that is quite a score in those screenshots. Maybe figure out how to rip the clouds from Mario 2 and throw them in there (problem is figuring out how to add another tile for the extreme left and right because those would be the ends).

It's good to see a few people *actively* are doing ASM and giving screenshots. Can't wait for this one. And as a few others have said, "don't cancel this hack" .

I also like the green dungeon blocks (they looked almost exactly the same as Strange MB3 before), as well as the former blue "x" boxes, and the clouds. The bricks would be awesome if you got rid of the rounded edges; those just don't look right..

Looks really nice, but a bit too much blue. (Haven't actually played the demo though.) I especially like this pic. Also, this one's not showing up.

An idea might be to remove the basic powerup system, and instead make it so that you always have either a tail or fireballs, which you choose with Select. You can also get other powerups such as Hammer Mario and the P-Wing, which would last for a few seconds or until you get hit depending on the powerup. (Perhaps you could even find them in the level.)

Also, the music changing idea is really cool. When you say you're getting rid of lives though, you mean like you have unlimited lives right?

Those last few pics look especially cool (Metroid style, woo), though a bit too green.
