Wow! This looks great! The clouds look a little strange, though. Otherwise, everything's good. The 100-second limit will definately be a challenge...

It's looking really great rockman. If you don't finish this, DD's hit list won't be the only one you'll be on.

I noticed that, too...it slows down a LOT sometimes. Did you ever figure out why it happens?
It's actually a technical reason. Running faster = game needs to focus on processing more of the level/enemy crap and rendering and the timer gets less attention.

Well you would think keeping track of an internal variable which takes up maybe 2 bytes at most wouldn't be very processor intensive . That's just poor programming if that's the reason. When you stop running does the timer update to its correct position?

Ok!

Actually, it happens in newer games too (Zelda the Wind Waker for example). Though I don't think it has the same reason...

It could be a simple implementation of time dilation. Whenever the timer is decremented, use the character's X speed as a count down to the next decrement. Though I don't see why they'd have bothered... (Could be a glitch; most games keep track of how many frames to go before ticking another second, and the X speed could be getting periodically dumped into that.) Lag shouldn't be an issue, the game has to process everything on the screen every frame no matter how fast you're moving, and I'm pretty sure the NES has a timer interrupt that interrupts X times a second that you could use.

Those new screenshots look just as good as the others, but there's one thing that caught my eye in them, and that's the squarish bushes in the 2nd and 6th screenshots. Right now, they more look like the tops of trees. I'm not saying you have to, but it could look better if you had trees as well as bushes in there. If you decided to do that, all you'd really need is one more block for the trunk

It's up to you if you want to change the title. I personally don't have anything wrong with either of the two.

Once again, this is looking very promising. Keep up the good work

I'm liking the way this is coming along.

The level designs look original enough to be fun, but they don't look RIDICULOUSLY difficult, which is a problem I see with a lot of hacks. I mean, I like to be challeneged, but a level should never, ever be designed so that it practically has to be played using save states. Your levels, on the other hand, appear faithful enough to look like they might have been actually present in the original cartridge, without being easily recognizable as levels already present in the game (another big problem I see with a lot of hacks) -- I like, I like...

The only thing, maybe, is that the palette -- especially on the underwater level -- seems overly blue? Which, I don't know, might be some kind of theme or motif that fits with the game...

Either way, I personally am excited to play your hack, keep us all updated.

hehe, those bushes. I was messing around with them, and then I wanted to make them Yoshi Eggs. But they don't look like them do they?

I don't know if I should stick with this dark blue color or not. If I make it dark, its going to be Dark Mario, otherwise, its not. I'm going to take some time to work on this. No pics for a few days, until I come up with something more final. Any advice you have would help. Thank you.

Your graphics hacking abilities have really improved lately, everything looks fairly easy on the eyes, and I'm really digging the dark blue Mario look. I love the time gimmick to the hack as well, a non impossible level challenge hack is something really rare. I mean, the only challenge to some Mario hacks is devious level designs (not a terrible thing, but it gets old after awhile), and it's refreshing to see another NEW type of challenge for players to face, not just the levels, insane jumps, or amount of enemies. Great job, even if for the idea alone.

A few hours won't hurt, I guess

All those screens except for something in the last one look very nice. I see what you mean when you said they're the best graphics you ever made in any hack

However, the thing in the last picture that I mentioned is with the left (and possibly right (it's too dark to tell)), edges of the pipes. They seem to have lines through them at periodic intervals, and it looks ugly compared to the pipes in the other screenshots you posted

The bushes now look a lot better in my opinion, and in the second through fourth screenshots, are those blue blocks smashable? If that's the case, it'd pretty much be like an underground level from Mario 1

It seems it would be harmful to your health to cancel this hack (judging by Googie and Chaos Force's most recent comments), so I'll finish by saying I'm really looking forward to playing this hack

I don't see any reason to say no, so sure. I'd be happy to There's one thing I missed in the last screenshot, that isn't a problem or anything, but I was curious about. What exactly is on Mario's chest? It looks like some sort of jewel thing to me.

Continuing the tradition of offering lots of constructive criticism without gushing over the certainly-present greatness...

I'm not a very big fan of the thick black border around those pipes in the latest screenshots, and the sky really shouldn't be the same color as the water (though I like the darker blue sky).

Well, since a lot of you want to play this, I'm releasing a small demo. It contains 4 levels that are completed.

Karadur, if you want to test the progress of this hack, just PM me. You can test the complete world 1 demo.

Heian-794, I took your advice. Thanks. The only thing though, is that I didn't really like the blue sky after a while. It ruins what the graphics are trying to accomplish.

If you have any questions, or other suggestions, you can post them here. Have fun, and tell me what you think.

There's only one problem I noticed so far in that demo, which you can see in this screenshot:

The coin to the left of Mario is impossible to get. That wouldn't be a problem in the normal game, but with something like this hack, where you have to collect 100 coins to beat a level, it's something that most likely should be fixed

Nice work on the demo. I liked the screenshots to start, but playing it is even better
