Might you, by any chance, have more than one screen? The one you've got there looks alright, but it's kind of hard to tell what you're hack's going to be like with just that

The main things that I notice in that one there, are the large brown area at the bottom of the second 'hill', and the fact that the hill sides just cut off. The background looks good, as do the trees (although they are a bit tall and thin Maybe have the tree made up of 2 tiles, or even 4 (2x2)).

Looking nice so far though

The first screen looks somewhat decent. Although the hill sides are cut and all though. Seems all somewhat nice. What would be much helping is if you post more screens.

Well at least the little hill things are changed. Although, what we meant by new pics, were like different ones..... Those are like the same pics with almost the same tiles on it.. If you know what I mean..

That's the same floor with the only thing changed being the palette Incidentally to make it look like it has a side you'll have to do more than put one line down it.

By the way.

Does this look very 8-bit to anyone else? I mean, there are a few exceptions, but it looks very 8-bit.

Also.

I thought it was a house, why does it have that background

The wall on the side of the house, and the house door does really look 8bit. I dont think the floor is 8bit though. As for the wall in the house, it really looks odd. I think that screen looks somthing like a factory or somthing.

I think it looks 8 bit because he is limiting how many colors he is using. It doesnt look bad at all, just low quality. Probably drawing the Gfx in paint or in the gfx editor.

Hey, I draw most of my GFX in LM's editor, that can't be a reason for them looking this low-quality

I am saying he could have done better, used more colors. I used the LM gfx editor when I used to hack. Before i quit hacking i started using photoshop. It works quite well.

Yes, this guy needs to start using more colours and thicker sides for the hills. Also for the brown spot, it looks like a 'cross section' view, so take a lesson from shows like The Simpsons and put funny stuff in the dirt, like dinosaur bones and crashed UFOs. And of course some rocks to even it out.

Use more colors when drawing your GFX. It doesnt take work to add colors, just takes work to use them.

Then again, you could always use the custom palette. Then you can add even more colors to your gfx and stuff, and make them look really good.

What you showed from those screens is that you were rushing, or either were not trying. So Im saying that you can do better than that.

Don't listen to Chris, your work shows promise. I recommend you play a TON of SNES platforming games, and take a good hard look at how the tiles look in those games. Maybe try your hard at ripping your own non-Mario graphics and making a good SMW tileset out of them to get a good feel how the pros make their sets work, both in 8x8 and 16x16. We all started somewhere, and heaven knows that my early early stuff was not the most spectacular, and look at me now!

I hope I wasnt trying to take things the wrong way here..I do admit that JJ is right, people do start at a place at some point. I guess this is your first hack? Sorry if I have been so mean to you, I didnt think it was your first.

I started out crappy as well.. Im sure people remember, but I continued on and got better.. Somewhat hard work, but you know what I mean.
