I am curious because there are a few Yoshi's Island hacks out right now, but they tend to get very little replies. My latest demo of SMW2+ which I've been showing tons of screens of for the past few months got no replies besides my beta testers, and Peardian's Yoshi's Island hack was completely ignored, and I don't really understand why. I think some factors may be because EggVine isn't very far along and Squash Monster has been very busy with other matters, or maybe it's just that people just aren't interested in Yoshi's Island. I'd like to know what you think, just to understand if hacking Yoshi's Island is really worth it for me and the other hackers, or if this forum is the appropriate place to post Yoshi's Island hacks. Thanks.

True that Yoshi Island has been completely ignored, but before the editor was made. Everyone was jumping up and down waiting for the editor. I dont know why all this is happening either.

Mabey its just a way to keep the newer things from being old I guess...

I see what you mean about people not really caring about Yoshi's Island hacks. I voted for the middle option, since although I haven't done a whole lot in regards to commenting on the hacks and such, they still interest me. Like what Chris said, before EggVine was released, everyone was all hyped about a Yoshi's Island editor, and now, you couldn't even tell people were excited about it before.

I'd say give it time. Maybe nobody seems interested in this stuff since it's still relatively new, and most people don't know what to do.

For what you said about this being the appropriate place to post your hacks, I'd have to say that this board section is as good a place as any to post them right now. If it comes to it, I'm sure a section dedicated to hacking that game could be implemented.

I think my timing with the release of my world 2 demo of SMW2+ was pretty bad. My first demo received many replies because EggVine was on the verge of being released and everyone was rather hyped up. Now the Yoshi's Island community is very dorment, because only a few people use the editor, and there haven't been any updates from SM lately, so this is probably why people don't respond to Yoshi's Island hacks. I think it would've been better to have released it to the few people who enjoy playing these hacks rather than post it on this board where people aren't very interested in YI at the moment. That would've saved plenty of discouragement for me, and possibly other YI hackers. I won't release a demo on the board anymore, unless YI interest significantly picks up again, which probably won't be for a long while, if ever.

Ok!

I ignore many threads with just progress screenshots if it are "only" level hacks. I don't play demo's very often either. Although, when people get to finish a hack of SMW2, I'll be sure to play it, be sure of that.

Maybe the people expected a haxx0r ass-kicking GUI like in Lunar Magic, thus being too "spoiled" about the user interface like LM
On the other side, you can edit SMW2 pretty convenient with EggVine

Maybe I'd get more replies if it was a full version, but I plan to release one more demo before the full version, of world 3 & 4. It would probably be better not to post it here then. Thanks for the info.

I never could get into playing YI, so naturally I kind of disregard and/or cringe when I see a thread about it. The only reason I'm in this one is because I could tell what it was about from the title.

The only thing I ever really cared for in Yoshi's Island was the fairly imaginitive boss fights. Since that time, I have really grown to dislike pretty much everything Mario (and.. well.. most things Nintendo).

Add to that the fact that I have never really used any type of hack at all, and you can pretty quickly see I am not your target audience.

If you look at the number of threads made per hack, you'll see that it's higher for Yoshi's Island hacks than for any other game's hacks (ignoring games that have their own forums). I think that the problem is that interest for a hack is divided up between each thread. And unless you want to make the effort to make demo patches with levels from all the different worlds, players who bother with the demo will have to play through the hack again when it's released (it's not bad if 8 random levels from different worlds are repeated, but what fun is it to play the same 8 levels again for each of four releases?). Remember, one world hacks in the SMW community are usually mostly ignored too.

I'd also like to point out that all of the YI hacks so far are aimed at hardcore YI fans -- so only the hardcore YI fans play them. I think the reaction would be better if we focused on making levels interesting rather than difficult, and made them faster to play through. Not everyone wants to play a slow quest to find all of the coins and flowers: some people like to bolt through levels as fast as possible, but we don't really have level designs compatable with this. Most level designs I've seen in YI hacks are narrow paths with only one choice of path and a number of difficult challenges that just eat up time. The SMW community was like this for a long time, and no one really cared untill they got past this stage.

Think about your audience. There's nothing wrong with making a hardcore challenge hack, but hardcore hacks will only be played by hardcore players. These people are limited in numbers. It looks like YI hackers will have to think about if they actually want a large audience or if they want to make a challenging hack -- for now, these two goals cannot be achieved at the same time.

Anyway, my personal reasons for not playing many hacks are 1) lack of time, 2) lack of ability to play levels for speed in hacks I've seen, and 3) my current project is so much cooler

I never really liked this game, so I don't think that an hack will change my opinion in this case.

I think with all the releases people make full of screen shots for yi hacks kinda takes away from the excitement in it... Though a few screens are nice I think people are bombarded with them with yi hacks. I think squash monsters editor is quite fine to make a hack with. Though like smw it takes alot to make a good hack besides new levels. ANYONE can make a new level :-P its squeezy throw in some new gfx and asm hacks then people are interested. Today i would have to believe alota the experience people are looking for is the gameplay and visual pleasure. Hope this helps you guys.
NOTE: Reason ive never really released a hack is due to I don't beleive i have yet met those standards. Because if ya release somthin not up to standards its almost useless to the comunity...kinda like givin someone a steam engine instead of nuclear

To tell the truth I myself seem to have YI hacks shutoff from my attention, perhaps I just want to wait till a full hack is done in which I can then beat that hack 100% on one go through, I'm guessing those excuses might be the same for others too.

And is there ANY hack that does not contain a snow level in world 1? It's not necessarily bad, just a pattern I noticed.

Now combine what he said with how much of a pain it is to hack without real graphic viewing (having to pretty much guess-and-check to see what objects work where and what things look like) and there's your problem.

Is that seriously true? Heh. I've never used eggvine, so...

And to answer the question, I'm not terribly interested, except in GoYo's hack which from what I've seen is far and away the best. If more people made quality things, interest would be higher, but meh =/

Thanks for all your opinions. This forum isn't that much into YI hacking, and I'm better off making my hack for the hackers and players that are hardcore rather than most of the people here who do not have any interest. I just wonder if more people will become interested as time goes along, or if YI hacking will turn out to be short-lived. Whatever the case, I still want to contiue my hack, no matter what ANYONE says!

I'd be more interested if I could find the damn rom! Probably just bad luck on my part, though.

Yoshi's Island has always been one of my favorite SNES games, except in the autoscrolling levels (they were either too slow or too fast.) Of course, because of this, I'm very interested in hacks of YI, but without a rom I can't make many comments since I can't play the hacks.

I'll admit that I'm not too interested -- not because the hacks aren't interesting, but rather because I've never played the original to completion. YI is such a cool-looking game and I feel like I should understand it inside out before trying to appreciate the improvements made by hackers.

It's not only Yoshi's Island hacks, I think. You'll notice that hukka's released an SMB3 editor that works nicely, and is pretty easy to use, and it even shows the game graphics, unlike EggVine. You'd think there'd be quite a few hacks for this game released by now, but there's been barely any if none released at all since the editor was available for download
