what do you want to do with SNES Legend of Zelda?

Because an Assembler is a program to make a game. A compiler is to take easier to read code and put it into more cryptic code. An editor is to change something already created.

Ok, an Assembler will take assembly code and translate it into machine code. Not every system or even every computer uses the same ASM language. Early generation games are written in assembly, but like any other language, it reads data as 1s and 0s just the same.

With that said, what you want is not an assembler, that will just translate asm written code into machine code used to change the programming of a game (which is far more complicated than it sounds). What you need is a level editor, a program that reads the ROM file for you and displays a level graphically and let you change it around, without you needing to know a flip about computers.

Go there and download Hyrule Magic.

You need to learn the type of assembly used for the SNES first. It's not just a few clicks here and there and you have a new feature.

There either needs to be a good FAQ on this shit (...er, links, given that romhacking.com has quite a few as is) or just yell at these newbies. For some reason, it seems newbish hackers are getting stupider as time goes on (hell, I may have not known that an IPS wasn't the full game or how the hell to run an emulator, but at least I figured out how to run SMB3D fine with only a few problems)

Mabye when I get home I'll start on one, the sheer stupidness of these people compels me to do it.

No need to make us newbie hackers feel bad... and anyway, being my age I already knew how to run emulators and apply IPS patches when I was seven, so don't give me any of that crap

I don't think he was picking on you. I agree with him, that most new hackers don't even bother to find and read stuff that they're looking for. They just expect that as long as they ask someone, they'll get what they need given to them on a silver platter. I'm not saying you fit that description or anything, but it's just that those are the sorts of things I've seen overall. Maybe if they said that they'd already searched around for what they were looking for, but couldn't find it, people would be more willing to help them.

That aside, the only SNES assembler I've got in my possession is SPASM. I'm not sure what the address is for that site, but once I find out, I'll give you the link

That guy above summed up this whole post before I even posted it, bleh.

Edit 2: I noticed something, too:

Hmm, I wonder what the thread called "Hyrule Magic Guide" is about

No, there has definitely been an increase in the number of stupid threads recently; I'd have to say it's DD and his uberl33t ROM hacks that make everyone waht to do the same, and they just try and do that instnatly, which makes them look like an idiot in the end (unless they can actually do it, of course, which if you're just starting out there's a one in a million chance)

RYjet: Judging how you seem to shift between mild AOLamer (big suprise there) and intelligence... well, bleh;

13 years old... hmm... that'd point to about 6 years ago (1998) which makes some sense, but you probably had internet access long before that or had someone else that liked it, also; I didn't even know about that until 2001, so...

---

Anyway, you could've at least done a Google search on these things, or... ugh, never mind.

I just don't see what's so hard about finding these things on your own; hell, Acmlm's ROM Hack Domain (it's at the bottom of the board) has that tool!

(if you really want to read it, just quote this post)

seeing how nobody bothered to answer the question....

you can get it here (right click, save as, it's geocities)

no doubt that link in the help file doesn't work anymore, but i've got a copy.

I'd recommend WLA DX if you want a good assembler though.
